Visakhapatnam, usually shortened to Vizag, is a Bay of Bengal port city where a coastal refinery, two deep-water ports, a steel plant, a shipyard and one of the country's largest bulk-drug clusters sit within a single working region. The refinery and the product terminals handle hydrocarbon gas and liquid beside the harbour, while the pharma estate at Parawada runs solvent-based chemistry. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is an ex phone built for people who work in those classified areas. It is pre-launch: what an engineering review sees today is a datasheet and a certification programme, not a certificate.

Vizag does not have one fence line. The refinery and product terminals sit on the harbour side of the city, the port and its bulk berths handle cargo around them, and the pharma special economic zone lies inland at Parawada on the Anakapalli side. A handset decision therefore crosses three different operators' permit systems, three different hazard types, and two very different workforces, one of marine and process operators, the other of chemists and batch supervisors.
A handset specified for an inland plant or a desert refinery does not carry over unchanged. Vizag is humid and warm, exposed to Bay of Bengal storms, split across several permit regimes, and unusual in mixing refining with pharmaceutical batch chemistry.
The city is warm all year, with May the hottest month, and the sea keeps the air humid. The failure mode for portable electronics is condensation and ingress, not just high ambient temperature. IP68 sealing and a rugged build are aimed at that. The T4 temperature class addresses surface temperature separately, and the certified ambient range will be fixed by the certificate.
Vizag lies on a coast that cyclones cross, and Hudhud in October 2014 forced the refinery to shut as a precaution. Shutdown and restart are the moments when contractor numbers and permit traffic climb. A managed fleet that can be issued, re-pointed and recovered quickly matters more than a spec sheet figure.
Hydrocarbon vapour and LPG fall in lower groups, but hydrogen in hydroprocessing and in pharmaceutical hydrogenation steps falls in group IIC. Specifying a IIB device would split the site by unit. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so that one equipment decision follows a person across the refinery and the pharma estate.
In an API block, wet cake leaving a centrifuge can carry solvent vapour into a room where dry powder is milled. That means Zone 1 or 2 gas and Zone 21 or 22 dust may sit in adjacent rooms. The design covers Zone 1 and Zone 21, though the operator's own area classification drawing decides where any device may go.
A refinery, a port berth and a pharma plant each run their own entry and permit-to-work rules. The refinery or plant owner's engineering review decides a device, and factory and explosives regulation sits above it. Anyone who has to carry one phone across two sites should expect two approvals, not one, and should ask each operator in writing.
Operations and contract labour often work in Telugu, while engineering, vendor and QA teams work in English. Android 16 supports both languages and lets a plant push its own policy, applications and camera restrictions through EMM enrolment. Confirm the language packs and keyboard needed for your fleet at the evaluation stage.
During a unit turnaround a shift in-charge may manage several hundred contractors across permits that change by the hour. A device approved for the area lets the in-charge photograph a blind, confirm an isolation and reach the planning cell without walking out of the battery limit, which cuts a step from a slow cycle.
LPG and product terminals run on rounds: gauges, valve line-ups, vapour checks and loading records. Carrying one sealed handset that photographs a leaking gland, scans an asset tag and calls control means the finding is logged where it is seen rather than rewritten from memory at the end of the shift.
In a solvent recovery or charging bay, a chemist or production supervisor wants to record an observation, check a material code and photograph a deviation as it happens. Where the area is classified, an uncertified phone forces a walk to the clean side, which is slow and tempts people to skip the record.
Cargo hand-over between ship and shore brings marine surveyors, terminal operators and agents onto one jetty with a narrow window. A single device for voice, photographs and checklists removes a hand-off at each stage, and Bluetooth pairing to a portable gas detector keeps the reading with the record.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 certification, with TÜV in Germany, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
None is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The operator's engineering and HSE review decides for its own site, working from the area classification and the certificate. Statutory approval in India is covered on the India overview page. A phone cannot rely on one operator's acceptance at another site, so ask each one for its requirement in writing.
That is the intent behind specifying group IIC rather than IIB. Hydrogen is present in refinery hydroprocessing and in pharmaceutical hydrogenation, while solvents and LPG sit in lower groups. Confirm the classification of each area with your own competent person; the handset is a design target until certified.
A phone holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. Battery replacement and repair would run through SAMS and the Indian partner it is appointing. That channel is not in place yet, and the terms will be published before any fleet ships.
