Explosion proof phone for Vadinar, Gujarat

Vadinar is a small coastal settlement on the Gulf of Kutch in Devbhumi Dwarka district, and it is a crude and products gateway for western India. A large refinery stands on the shore, product berths sit in the Pathfinder Inlet, and a single point mooring handles crude tankers offshore. Handset decisions here are about people moving between a process plant, a tank area and a marine terminal, often on long walks and boat transfers. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The site: Vadinar, refinery and offshore terminal

The refinery runs at about 20 million tonnes a year. Marine facilities include two product berths and a single point mooring in the Gulf of Kutch, and an offshore oil terminal at Vadinar that Deendayal Port Authority has run since 1978 with a crude mooring provided by Indian Oil. The Salaya to Mathura crude pipeline starts at Salaya, close by. Access to the refinery and terminal is controlled and set by each operator.

What Vadinar does to portable equipment

Vadinar is a remote, exposed coastal site, and much of the work is at the water's edge or offshore. Heat, salt, wind, long distances and boat transfers matter as much as any hazard, and each operator applies its own rules to what a person may carry.

Salt, spray and humidity at the berths

Product berths in a tidal inlet and a mooring in the open gulf put salt air on every connector, speaker mesh and seal. Salt works slowly, so the problem is a handset that is fine at handover and noisy after a season. IP68 sealing helps, but an evaluation should include a rinse-and-inspect routine agreed with the operator.

Heat and sun across a flat, exposed coast

The site is flat and open, with little shade on tank tops and jetties. Surface and ambient temperatures are what a device lives with, and the usable range is the one stated on the certificate, not a general ruggedness claim. Handsets carried on a pipe rack or dashboard should be tested for thermal shutdown during evaluation.

Hydrogen on the refinery side, crude alone on the jetty

Hydrotreating units run hydrogen-rich gas, which falls in gas group IIC, while crude and many products sit lower at IIA or IIB. A handset marked only for the lower groups would be refused on the process side. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so one device works across the whole site, subject to the certificate.

Boat and tanker transfers

People reach the mooring and tankers by launch and ladder, with wet decks and little room. A sealed, drop-tolerant body matters, and the operator's marine procedures decide whether a phone may be taken aboard. Anything carried onto a vessel in a gas-dangerous area is governed by the ship's and terminal's own rules.

Remote location and patchy coverage

Vadinar is a long way from a city, and radio coverage at the mooring is a site question rather than a phone question. The IS-04Z1 supports 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, but whether the terminal has coverage where the work happens should be surveyed before a deployment is planned.

Gujarati, Hindi and English among marine and plant crews

Plant staff, port crews and contractors do not share one first language. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets one approved configuration go to every phone. Gujarati and other interface languages should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Use cases · Vadinar

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Process unit rounds

An operator on a conversion-unit round records a reading, photographs a flange and reports it from the same device. Where handsets are not allowed, those jobs fall back on paper and a radio call. Which units the phone may enter depends on the certificate and the plant's area classification.

Marine02

Jetty-head loading checks

Loading product at a berth involves a terminal operator, a ship's officer and often a surveyor, each with a checklist. A single managed phone for photographs, readings and calls reduces the paper and radios carried along the jetty, subject to the operator's rules on portable equipment at the loading arms.

Offshore terminal03

Mooring and pipeline-end inspections

Hose, valve and pump equipment at a single point mooring is reached only by boat. A device that photographs a defect, logs its position and sends the report from the site can save a second trip. Network coverage at the mooring must be checked, and the phone does not replace the marine communications the vessel already uses.

Pipelines and storage04

Pump-station and tank-area walkdowns

Technicians walking tank areas and pump stations capture tag scans, photographs and readings against asset records. NFC supports tag scanning where tags are fitted. The IS-04Z1 can pair with a Bluetooth gas detector, though the detector remains the safety device and the phone only records its reading.

Questions · Vadinar

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Vadinar today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Vadinar?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be given in writing against a stated quantity and site. Be cautious of any supplier quoting a firm figure and delivery date for an uncertified Ex handset.

Which approvals will a Vadinar site ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. The refinery operator, the port authority and any vessel each apply their own rules, so confirm what each will accept in writing.

Can a phone be taken aboard tankers or onto the mooring?

That is for the terminal and the vessel to decide. Marine areas follow the ship's own safety rules and the terminal's procedures, and a handset with a land-based hazardous-area certificate is not automatically accepted on board. Raise it with the operator's marine HSE team and the vessel master before any trial.

Who will support and repair the phone in Gujarat?

Support will be provided by SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. Service arrangements, repair turnaround and spares have not been published, and none should be assumed. Intrinsically safe equipment should be repaired only by a party with the right authority, so ask for the repair route in writing.

Is coverage good enough at Vadinar to rely on a smartphone?

That cannot be assumed. Coverage on the refinery, at the berths and at the offshore mooring varies, and it is a site matter. The IS-04Z1 supports 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, and Android apps can queue records when offline. A coverage survey of the working areas should come before any rollout plan.
