Explosion proof phone for Mathura, Uttar Pradesh

Mathura refinery stands on the Delhi-Agra highway, and has supplied the northern market since 1982. It processes crude that arrives by pipeline and sends products out by pipeline, rail and road. It also sits inside the Taj Trapezium Zone, so it operates under tighter environmental scrutiny than most refineries. For the people on its units, a handset decision is part of a documented safety file. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.

The site: IndianOil's Mathura refinery

The refinery has been expanded since it was commissioned. It is an older, compact inland refinery rather than a petrochemical estate, so the classified areas are the familiar refinery set: distillation, conversion, treating, tankage and despatch. Crude comes in through the Salaya-Mathura pipeline, and finished products leave on several product pipelines and by road.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Indian Oil Corporation, Mathura Refinery
The only refinery here, producing LPG, petrol, diesel, naphtha, bitumen, sulphur and propylene.
Salaya-Mathura crude pipeline operations
The long crude line from Gujarat that supplies Mathura, Koyali and Panipat.
Mathura-Delhi product pipeline
A product line carrying products from the refinery to Bijwasan in Delhi.
Mathura-Agra and Mathura-Bharatpur lines
Shorter product pipelines serving Agra and Bharatpur from the refinery.
Taj Trapezium Zone Authority
Environmental regulator for industry in the zone; it sits outside plant operations but shapes them.
Turnaround and EPC contractors
Appointed by IndianOil project by project; the operator sets equipment acceptance for each job.

Classified units and areas

Crude and vacuum distillation
Hot hydrocarbon gas and liquids around heaters, columns and pump rows.
Hydroprocessing and treating units
Hydrogen-rich service, which sets the gas group on a refinery.
Sulphur recovery units
Hydrogen sulphide handling, which calls for personal detectors as well as certified equipment.
Propylene recovery
Light olefin handling, with the product feeding polypropylene production elsewhere in IndianOil.
Tank farm and pump houses
Product and crude tankage, with manifold and pumping areas between them.
Pipeline despatch and loading
Pipeline pig stations and tank-truck loading, where product leaves the site.

What Mathura does to portable equipment

Mathura is an inland refinery on the northern plain, run under unusual environmental scrutiny. That combination makes documentation, heat tolerance and managed devices more relevant than salt or monsoon surge.

Heat across the northern plains

Mathura's summers are long and hot, and winters are cooler. The handset must hold its sealing and battery behaviour through both. The certified ambient range is whatever the certificate states, so an evaluation unit should be tested on an afternoon shift in the hot months, not only in an office.

A refinery under the Taj Trapezium regime

The refinery lies in the Taj Trapezium Zone, where environmental rules on industry are tighter than elsewhere. Operators there are used to documentation. A device with a certificate and control drawing on file fits that culture better than one accepted by a verbal assurance.

Hydrogen and sour service, group IIC

Hydroprocessing runs hydrogen-rich gas, which sits in group IIC, while sulphur recovery involves hydrogen sulphide. The IS-04Z1 targets II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 for the gas rating, but no phone replaces a personal gas detector. The device can pair with a detector over Bluetooth to log readings.

An older plant with scattered power points

A refinery commissioned in 1982 spreads its units over a large footprint, and a socket in a safe area can be a long walk from the work. A 4,000 mAh battery specified around a full shift matters more here than a headline feature count.

Documentation of equipment for audits

Safety audits at a long-running refinery reward traceable records: certificate, control drawing and conditions of safe use. None of these exists for the IS-04Z1 yet. When it does, SAMS would expect the operator's HSE team to review it against its own area classification before any unit is issued.

Hindi and English on a managed fleet

Operators, contract workmen and visiting engineers share the site. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets the shift in-charge restrict applications or switch off the camera where photography is not allowed.

Use cases · Mathura

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Distillation and hydroprocessing rounds

An outside operator on a unit round logs readings, photographs a leak at a flange and reaches the control room from the same sealed device. The saving is a report written at the equipment rather than recalled later. Where the device may be carried is set by the certificate and the site's classification.

Sulphur and treating02

Records alongside a gas detector

On sulphur recovery and treating units, the detector worn by the person is the safety device. Pairing it with a handset over Bluetooth lets a reading be logged against the asset tag and sent to the shift in-charge, so the record follows the person rather than a paper form.

Pipelines and despatch03

Product despatch and pig-station checks

Products leave Mathura on pipelines to Delhi, Agra and Bharatpur and by road. Staff at despatch points and pipeline stations check pressures, seals and loading. A phone that photographs a seal, scans a tag over NFC and sends the record onward saves a trip back to a terminal.

Turnarounds04

Permit and handover on a planned shutdown

In a shutdown, electricians, scaffolders and inspectors share a bay on different permits. A managed phone holding the permit, isolation list and a contact directory keeps the permit holder in the unit. Whether it is accepted is decided by the operator's own procedures.

Questions · Mathura

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Mathura today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Mathura?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and any firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset should be treated with caution.

Does the Taj Trapezium Zone affect which equipment we can use?

The zone regulates industry and emissions, not handsets, so it does not set an equipment standard. Its relevance is cultural: operators in the zone work under close scrutiny and keep careful records. Hazardous-area equipment is governed by PESO approval and the operator's own rules, which IndianOil's HSE team can confirm.

Which gas group matters at Mathura?

Group IIC, because hydroprocessing units run hydrogen-rich gas and hydrogen sits in IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so one device is intended to cover the site. The classification drawings and the final certificate decide where it may go, not the datasheet.

Who would support and repair phones near Mathura?

Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. Ask early about exchange times and spares, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.

Can contractors enrol their own phones for a shutdown?

Only if IndianOil accepts them. Equipment rules are set by the operator for each site and job. EMM enrolment lets the operator push its own camera and application policy onto a contractor phone for the work, and remove it when the crew leaves.
