Explosion proof phone for Mumbai, Maharashtra

Mumbai's refining and chemical industry sits in the eastern suburbs, around Mahul, Chembur and Trombay, with two long-established refineries, a fertiliser company and a power utility in one dense belt. Across the harbour, the Nhava Sheva port area handles liquid cargo including LPG and chemicals. These are old, cramped, brownfield sites where space is tight and shutdown windows are short, so the question about a handset is practical: can it go where the work is. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The site: Mahul and Trombay, then Nhava Sheva

Two refineries stand at Mahul in the eastern suburbs: one dating from the mid-1950s and operated by Bharat Petroleum, the other by Hindustan Petroleum. Chemical, fertiliser and power operations share the same belt around Chembur and Trombay. Across the harbour, Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva is best known for containers but also has liquid cargo terminals. Each site has its own gate, permit and approved-equipment rules, and a contractor may work at several in a month.

What Mumbai does to portable equipment

Mumbai is hot, humid and wet for much of the year, and the industrial belt is crowded, old and in the middle of a city. Climate, congestion and several different owners shape how a handset is sealed, managed and approved.

A long, heavy monsoon

Mumbai's monsoon runs from June into September, with sustained heavy rain and humidity that stays high afterwards. The failure mode is water and condensation in ports and seams. IP68 sealing is aimed at that, though service life across a wet season is something an evaluation should test, not assume.

Salt air on a harbour shoreline

The Mahul and Trombay belt and the Nhava Sheva berths face the harbour, so salt works on connectors and seals. An agreed rinse-and-inspect routine is worth settling with the operator before a fleet is issued, rather than relying on the sealing rating alone.

Brownfield layouts and tight spaces

Both Mahul refineries date back decades, and their units, pipe racks and tanks are packed closely. Classified areas overlap and boundaries change from one block to the next. A device designed for Zone 1, with a Zone 21 design target as well, saves the work of swapping handsets at each boundary, subject to the certificate and the plant's drawings.

Hydrogen on the refinery units

Hydroprocessing units run hydrogen-rich gas, and hydrogen falls in gas group IIC. A handset marked only for IIA or IIB would be refused on those units. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so one phone can be carried across the site, subject to the certificate and the operator's acceptance.

Several owners, several rulebooks

Refineries, a fertiliser company, a power utility and a port each run their own permits and equipment rules, and approval at one gate does not carry to the next. Contractors moving between them need the same documented evidence every time, and each operator's HSE team decides what is accepted.

Marathi, Hindi and English on a mixed crew

Mumbai crews draw on workers from across the country, so no single interface language fits everyone. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets the operator push one approved configuration to every phone. Marathi and other languages should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Use cases · Mumbai

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Shutdown and turnaround inspection

Short shutdown windows on a brownfield refinery put pressure on inspection crews to log defects quickly. A phone that photographs a corroded line, ties it to an asset tag over NFC and sends it to the planner saves the walk back to the office. Which units it may enter depends on the certificate and the plant's classification.

Port liquid terminals02

LPG and liquid cargo transfers

LPG and chemical transfers at a port terminal involve operator staff, ship's crew and surveyors working to checklists. One managed phone for photographs, readings and calls cuts the paper and radios carried at the berth, subject to the terminal's own rules on portable equipment at the loading arms.

Fertiliser and chemicals03

Ammonia area walkdowns

Inspecting ammonia storage and handling needs photographs, readings and a message to the permit holder. Paired with the operator's detector over Bluetooth, the IS-04Z1 can record a reading against the tag where it was taken, while the detector still decides whether anyone may remain in the area.

Contractors04

Multi-site service crews

A contractor who works across several Mumbai sites carries a bundle of site-specific approvals. A managed phone with a single enrolment profile and documented certification gives each operator's safety team the same evidence set, though each operator remains free to accept it or ask for more.

Questions · Mumbai

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Mumbai today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Mumbai?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be given in writing against a stated quantity and site. Be cautious of any supplier quoting a firm figure and delivery date for an uncertified Ex handset.

Which approvals will a Mumbai refinery or terminal ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. Each refinery, port terminal and plant then applies its own acceptance rules, so confirm the requirement with its HSE and procurement teams.

Does the monsoon and salt air change what we should evaluate?

Yes. Test the phone through a wet period if possible, and check ports, seams and the speaker area for moisture and salt after use. IP68 describes the sealing of the enclosure, but a real service life on a harbour shoreline is established by trial. An evaluation unit for safe areas can be used for that now.

Who will support and repair the phone in Maharashtra?

Support will be provided by SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. Service arrangements, repair turnaround and spares have not been published, and none should be assumed. Intrinsically safe equipment should be repaired only by a party with the right authority, so ask for the repair route in writing.

Can one phone be used by contractors at several Mumbai sites?

In principle, a managed phone with a documented certificate can go between sites, but each operator decides what it accepts, and some will want to see their own paperwork and may restrict portable devices in particular units. Agree the evidence package with each site's HSE team before a contractor fleet is issued.
