A cyclone coast with a monsoon
The Odisha coast is cyclone-prone. Storm preparation involves isolating units and moving people. A sealed phone that stays usable in rain and wind, and can be managed centrally, is a practical tool in that period.
Paradip is IndianOil's newest large refinery, on the Odisha coast beside Paradip Port. It was inaugurated in 2016 and is built to run heavy, high-sulphur crude with no residue left over, which means coking, sulphur recovery and a petroleum coke stream alongside the usual refinery units. Crude arrives through offshore moorings, and a large phosphatic fertiliser complex shares the port. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
Launching Q4 2026 · ATEX and IECEx certification in progress
Paradip is a coastal complex in Jagatsinghpur district. The refinery is the main process site, supplied with crude from tankers that moor offshore and pump ashore through subsea pipelines. Next to the port, a fertiliser complex imports ammonia and phosphoric acid. Heavy crude and a nil-residue design make this a conversion-heavy plant, with hydrogen, sulphur and coke handled together on one site.
Paradip is a hot, humid coast exposed to cyclones, running a refinery designed for heavy sour crude. The result is more dust, more hydrogen sulphide risk and more weather exposure than an inland site, and a phone is specified around those facts.

Heat and humidity are high for much of the year, and the plant sits close to salt water. IP68 sealing is aimed at water and condensation, though service life in this air should be tested on an evaluation unit. The certified ambient range is whatever the certificate states.
Coking produces petroleum coke, and handling it creates dust. The IS-04Z1 design target covers Zone 21 as well as Zone 1, so one device is intended to serve both the unit and the coke area. Whether an area is Zone 21 or Zone 22 comes from the site's classification drawings.
A refinery built for high-sulphur crude has a large sulphur recovery duty and a real hydrogen sulphide hazard. A phone is not a toxic gas detector. Bluetooth pairing lets a detector's reading be logged against a tag, but the personal detector stays the safety device.
Conversion units run on hydrogen-rich gas, and hydrogen sits in gas group IIC. A handset limited to IIA or IIB would be left at the gate. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is intended to avoid that, subject to the certificate and the site's own classification.
Operations, contractors and visiting engineers at a new site draw from many states. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management. Odia and other interface languages should be confirmed against the datasheet before a fleet is specified.
A field operator on a coker or hydroprocessing round logs readings, photographs a leaking joint and calls the control room from one sealed device. Where it may be carried depends on the certificate and the classification of each area, and on the operator accepting it.
Coke handling is dust work, with fine powder on every surface and a combustible-dust classification around it. A sealed phone that can be wiped down and used to photograph conveyor or storage conditions gives maintenance a record without a second device being taken in.
Crude comes ashore from tankers moored far offshore through subsea lines to an onshore tank farm. Staff at the shore terminal coordinate with the vessel and the control room during a cargo. One device for voice, checklists and photographs cuts the radios and paperwork carried across the tank farm.
At a phosphatic fertiliser complex, inspectors photograph pipework, record readings and message the permit holder. Paired with the operator's detector over Bluetooth, the IS-04Z1 can record a reading against the tag. The detector decides whether a person may stay in the area.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and any firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset should be treated with caution.
Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval. IndianOil and the fertiliser operator each apply their own acceptance rules, so confirm what each requires with its HSE and procurement teams.
Usually yes where the site's classification drawings call an area Zone 21 or Zone 22. Petroleum coke handling creates dust, and a gas-only rating would leave that out. The IS-04Z1 design target includes Zone 21, and the final marking is whatever the certificate states.
Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. On a coast far from the main hubs, ask early about spares held locally and exchange times, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.
That is an operational plan for the operator. Enrolled phones can be locked, located or updated through the EMM console, and a sealed IP68 device is built for rain. How units are stored, shut down and re-issued is covered by the site's own storm procedure, not by the phone.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for India. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
