Explosion proof phone for Mundra and Kandla, Gujarat

Mundra and Kandla are the two big port areas of Kutch, on the Gulf of Kutch, . Between them they handle crude oil, LPG, LNG, petroleum products, liquid chemicals, edible oils and fertiliser inputs, and feed pipelines to northern India. The work happens on jetties, in tank farms and at loading arms, where the area is classified and the nearest safe room is far away. A handset taken there has to be approved first. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The sites: Mundra and Kandla, Kutch

Kandla, now operated by Deendayal Port Authority, is a long-established bulk and liquid port in Kutch, with oil jetties and tank farms on the creek. Mundra, run by Adani Ports, is the largest commercial port in India and has dedicated liquid berths, a crude mooring and gas terminals. Both ports are served by tank operators, and both send products inland by pipeline, road and rail.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Deendayal Port Authority
Port authority at Kandla, with seven oil jetties, five of them operated by the authority itself.
Adani Ports and SEZ
Owner and operator of Mundra Port, including its liquid terminal, LPG terminal and crude mooring.
Indian Oil Corporation
Operates an oil jetty at Kandla and the Kandla to Bhatinda pipeline.
Hindustan Petroleum
Operates the Mundra to Delhi product pipeline, starting at Mundra.
IFFCO
Operates its own oil jetty at Kandla alongside the authority's and Indian Oil's.
Bulk liquid terminal operators
Companies that run tank farms at the ports, such as Aegis at Kandla; scope and site rules vary.

What Mundra and Kandla do to portable equipment

This is a hot, arid, salty coast exposed to cyclones, with long distances between the jetty and the nearest charging point. Those facts, and the number of separate operators on each quay, decide how a handset is sealed, powered and managed.

Kutch heat and low humidity

Kutch is a hot, dry district, with summer daytime temperatures that can reach the high 40s degrees Celsius. A handset left on a dashboard or a jetty deck takes that heat on top of its own. The ambient range an Ex phone may be used in is whatever the certificate states, so check that range against your own summer conditions.

Salt air and spray at the jetty

Jetty heads and mooring shore stations sit in salt-laden air and spray. Salt corrodes connectors, speaker meshes and seals over months. IP68 sealing is aimed at water and dust, but rinsing and inspection routines are worth agreeing with the terminal operator before a fleet is issued.

Cyclone season and port closures

The Gujarat coast is exposed to Arabian Sea cyclones, and ports close and reopen around them. Crews work long shifts before and after a weather event, often away from a charging point. A battery of 4,000 mAh is specified around a shift, but it is worth testing against your own storm-preparation routine.

LPG and bulk liquids, mostly IIA to IIB

LPG and many petroleum products sit in lower gas groups, and a terminal may need nothing higher. But a port site often takes mixed cargoes, and a single fleet that moves between terminals is simpler to manage at group IIC. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 covers that, subject to the certificate.

Many operators on one quay

A port authority, a private port operator, terminal owners, pipeline companies and vessel crews each run their own permit and equipment rules. Approval at one berth does not carry to the next. Contractors who move between them need the same documented evidence each time, and each operator's HSE team decides what is accepted.

Distance, logistics and shared crews

Mundra and Kandla are far from most manufacturing centres, and a failed device cannot be replaced from a nearby shop. Crews also include seafarers and surveyors from outside India. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets one configuration be applied to every phone. Gujarati should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Ports01

Jetty transfer supervision

A supervisor at an oil jetty coordinates the vessel, the shore tank farm and a surveyor during a transfer. A single managed phone can carry checklists, photographs of a hose connection and calls to the control room. What may be carried onto the jetty head is set by the port authority or the terminal operator, and by the certificate.

Tank terminals02

Tank farm rounds and gauging records

Tank farm operators check levels, valves and pump houses across a large site. Photographing a gauge, attaching it to an asset tag over NFC and sending it to the shift office saves a walk back. Whether the tank area is classified for the phone depends on the certificate and the operator's classification drawing.

Gas terminals03

LPG and LNG terminal operations

Gas terminals have storage, compressors and loading points where leaks are the main concern. Staff can pair a personal gas detector over Bluetooth so a reading is logged against the asset where it was taken. The detector remains the safety device, and the phone does not replace it.

Pipelines04

Dispatch and booster station inspection

Pipeline stations at the head of the Kandla and Mundra lines are small, remote sites with pumps and valves. An inspector can photograph a seal, record a pressure reading and send a work request without carrying paper. Access to each station and its classification are set by the pipeline operator.

Questions · Mundra and Kandla

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Mundra or Kandla today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Mundra or Kandla?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind.

Which approvals will a port or terminal here ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. Each port and terminal operator then applies its own acceptance rules, so confirm with its HSE and procurement teams.

Is IIC necessary for LPG and bulk liquid terminals?

Often it is not, because LPG and most petroleum products sit in lower gas groups. A IIC marking target is a higher bar that also covers hydrogen. It suits a buyer who wants one fleet for several sites. Confirm the group your own areas need with your competent person, as classification belongs to the operator.

Who would support and repair the phones in Kutch?

Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. Ask early about turnaround time, spares and how a damaged unit is exchanged, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.

Can contractors and visiting crews use the same phones across terminals?

That is each operator's decision. A port authority, a private port and a tank terminal run their own access and equipment rules, so approval at one does not carry to another. EMM enrolment lets an operator apply its own policy to a contractor phone for the job and remove it when the crew leaves.
