Explosion proof mobile phone for pharmaceutical manufacturing in India

Looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for pharmaceutical plants in India? The country's bulk-drug industry is concentrated in clusters at Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad and Baddi, and in each of them the hazard is solvent vapour and fine powder rather than crude oil. This page is for the EHS, production and QA teams who have to decide what is allowed into a reactor bay or a dryer room. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where solvent and dust classify an Indian pharmaceutical plant

Active ingredient manufacture is batch chemistry. A reactor is charged with solvent, heated, cooled, filtered and distilled, and the solvent is recovered for reuse. Common process solvents include methanol, acetone, toluene, ethyl acetate and tetrahydrofuran, with hydrogen used in hydrogenation steps. Around charging points, centrifuges, receivers and recovery columns the area is classified as Zone 1 or Zone 2 depending on ventilation and how the transfer is made. Then the product is dried, milled and sifted. Fine organic powders can burn or explode, and wet cake leaving a centrifuge can bring solvent vapour into a dust area, so a dryer room can need both a gas and a dust assessment.

Clusters and companies

Visakhapatnam and Parawada
Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, a pharma special economic zone, with many API and intermediate producers.
Hyderabad
Genome Valley and the wider Hyderabad belt, with API, formulation and biologics plants.
Ahmedabad and Gujarat
Solvent-handling API and formulation sites around Ahmedabad and across Gujarat.
Baddi
The Himachal Pradesh pharmaceutical hub, largely formulation plus some bulk drug.
Contract manufacturers and exporters
Many plants work to customer and regulator audits, so documented equipment matters more than site rules alone.

Classified units and areas

Reactor bays and charging points
Solvent and hydrogen, usually the most heavily classified rooms on site.
Solvent recovery and distillation
Columns, condensers and receivers handling flammable vapour.
Solvent tank farm and drum store
Bulk storage and the transfer lines to the production block.
Centrifuge and filter-dryer rooms
Wet solid handling where vapour and powder share the same space.
Milling, sifting and blending
Dry powder with a low ignition energy, classified for dust.
Effluent and solvent waste areas
Waste solvent handling and incineration feed points.
Built for local conditions

What an explosion proof mobile phone faces in an Indian pharmaceutical plant

A pharmaceutical block asks a handset to be safe in a flammable atmosphere and to behave itself in a regulated plant, where records matter as much as the equipment.

Solvent vapour from charging to recovery

Solvents such as methanol and acetone sit in gas group IIA, tetrahydrofuran in IIB and hydrogen in IIC. An IIC marking target covers all of them, so one handset serves the reactor bay, the recovery area and the hydrogenation suite.

Dust where a gas rating stops

Dryers, mills and sifters are dust areas. A Zone 21 design target is part of the programme for those rooms, and the final marking will be whatever the certificate states. Check it against your dust classification drawing before any fleet order.

Plants that are audited, not just inspected

Regulators and customers inspect these plants for GMP and data integrity as well as safety. A managed handset gives QA a record of who carried what into a classified room, and Android Enterprise lets you control which applications are present.

Cleaning, gowning and cameras

A sealed IP68 body is easier to wipe down than one with open ports, but QA decides which cleaning agents are validated, and no cleanroom claim is made for the device. Cameras need a site policy, since photographs of batch records or processes are often not allowed.

Use cases · India

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Production01

Batch observation in a reactor bay

A chemist checking a temperature or a sample point in a Zone 1 bay can record the observation and scan a container tag on the spot, instead of walking out to the airlock to write it up from memory.

Maintenance02

Breakdown work on a dryer or centrifuge

A fitter called to a centrifuge fault needs the permit, the drawing and a photograph of the fault to reach the engineer. One handset does that without leaving the classified room.

EHS03

Solvent store and tank farm inspection

An EHS officer walking the drum store and the tank farm can log readings and photographs for an audit trail, with a gas detector paired over Bluetooth.

Working with the operators

Audits, contractors and site access

Each plant manages its own contractors and equipment approvals, and a company with several blocks usually keeps a separate procedure for each. The petrochemical and oil and gas pages for India cover the heavier end of the same hazardous-area picture.

What plant teams would ask for

Classification by room
Gas group, temperature class and dust zone for each area the handset will enter, from the plant's own classification study.
Certification evidence
IECEx and PESO approval, plus the control drawing and conditions of safe use. None has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet.
Quality and IT review
Whether the device is allowed in production areas, how it is managed, and how photographs and data are retained. Ask your QA and IT teams directly. See also explosion proof phone for petrochemical plants in India.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for pharmaceutical use in India yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification, including PESO, IECEx and ATEX, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Can one handset cover both solvent rooms and powder rooms?

That is the design intent, with a Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust target. Whether it is acceptable in a given room depends on the plant's classification study and on the marking the certificate finally carries.

Is a handset allowed in a cleanroom or sterile area?

Do not assume so. The IS-04Z1 is designed for hazardous-area use, and no cleanroom or sterile-area claim is made for it. Sterile and cleanroom rules are your QA team's call.

Does formulation-plant approval extend to an API block under the same owner?

Typically not. Each facility runs its own site-level procurement and area review, because the hazard profile of a solvent block and a tablet plant differs.
