Explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemicals in India

Looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemical plants in India? Most of the country's cracker and polymer capacity sits beside a refinery or a gas source rather than on its own: Reliance at Jamnagar, ONGC Petro additions at Dahej, Indian Oil at Panipat and Haldia Petrochemicals in West Bengal. This page is for the HSE, maintenance and telecoms teams who decide what may be carried into those units. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified in an Indian petrochemical complex

A cracker complex is a chain of hazardous areas. Feedstock arrives as naphtha or as ethane-rich gas and goes through furnaces into a cold section where ethylene and propylene are separated. Downstream are hydrogenation, aromatics and butadiene units, then polymerisation, extrusion and bagging. The gas end of that chain is Zone 1 and Zone 2 hydrocarbon atmospheres, with ethylene and hydrogen setting the gas group. The polymer end is a different problem: polyethylene and polypropylene powder in silos, conveying lines and bagging halls creates combustible dust, which is why a Zone 21 and Zone 22 design target matters here as much as the gas rating.

What an explosion proof mobile phone faces in a petrochemical complex in India

The complex is usually newer and more automated than an older refinery, so the question is rarely whether people need to carry a device. It is whether one device can cover gas, dust and a contractor workforce at the same time.

Ethylene and hydrogen on the same site

Ethylene sits in gas group IIB and hydrogen in IIC, and a cracker has plenty of both. With a marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, one handset covers the cold section and the hydrogenation units without a separate device for each.

Polymer dust, not only gas

Polyethylene and polypropylene powder is combustible. Silos and bagging halls are dust areas, so a gas-only handset is not enough for the polymer end of the complex. The Zone 21 design target is there for those areas, subject to the final marking on the certificate.

Heat around furnaces and a monsoon outside

Cracking furnaces throw radiant heat, and Gujarat adds salt air and a heavy monsoon. IP68 sealing and the shock and vibration construction suit pipe-rack and furnace-bay duty; the ambient range the certificate allows is what your engineer checks.

One site, several contractors

EPC and turnaround work is split between civil, mechanical, electrical and instrument contractors. Enrolling handsets under your own console lets the operator keep contractor devices on the approved applications and wipe them at demobilisation.

Use cases · India

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Furnace and cold-section rounds

An outside operator walks furnace bays, compressors and the cold section on a set round. Logging a reading, photographing a weeping flange and phoning the control room from the same device replaces the clipboard and a handheld radio.

Maintenance02

Cracker decoke and turnaround support

A complex of this kind stops on a planned programme, with contractor crews on short-cycle permits. A handset that holds the permit, the isolation list and a contact directory keeps the permit holder inside the unit instead of walking back to the permit office.

Polymers03

Bagging hall and silo inspection

Inspecting a silo discharge or a bagging line is dust work, with powder on every surface. A sealed handset that can be wiped down and photographed in place records the condition of a dust collector without a second device being carried in.

Working with the operators

Procurement, contractors and site access

The integrated sites run their own approval for equipment, and a contractor working at more than one complex meets a different process at each. Our oil and gas page for India covers the refinery side of the same sites.

What operators' teams would ask for

Area classification by unit
Gas group and temperature class for the cracker and dust zone for the polymer lines, from the site's own classification drawings.
Certification evidence
IECEx and PESO approval, with control drawing and conditions of safe use. None has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet.
Contractor and procurement route
Whether a unit may be brought in by an EPC contractor under its own scope or must be bought through the owner. Ask each complex's procurement and HSE teams directly. See also explosion proof phone for oil and gas in India.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for petrochemical use in India yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification, including PESO, IECEx and ATEX, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Does the polymer end of a complex need a dust rating?

Usually yes. Powder in silos, conveying lines and bagging halls is classified for combustible dust, and the area classification drawings will say whether it is Zone 21 or Zone 22. The IS-04Z1 design target includes Zone 21; the final marking is whatever the certificate states.

Does integration with a refinery change the rating for a petrochemical unit?

The hydrocarbon gas groups overlap, and hydrogen service sits in IIC on both sides of the fence. The classification of each unit is still set by the site's competent person, not assumed from the refinery next door.

Does an EPC contractor's approval at one complex carry to another?

No. Each owner runs its own procurement and site-access process, even for the same contractor and the same scope.
