Explosion proof phone for Dahej, Gujarat

Dahej sits on the Gulf of Khambhat in Bharuch district and is one of the densest hydrocarbon and chemical sites in western India. An LNG regasification terminal, a naphtha and gas cracker complex, chlor-alkali and fluorochemical plants, and port terminals for liquid chemicals all share the same stretch of coast. Anyone who works in the classified parts of that cluster carries a phone every shift, and the handset has to be approved before it crosses a plant gate. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The site: Dahej, SEZ, port and terminals

Dahej is a coastal industrial belt rather than a single plant. It combines a GIDC industrial estate, a special economic zone, and a port complex with an LNG jetty pair and chemical berths. Gas arrives as LNG cargoes and leaves by pipeline; liquid chemicals and feedstocks move through the port; polymers, caustic soda and speciality chemicals leave by road and rail. Several owners operate side by side, each with its own permit rules.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Petronet LNG
Operates the Dahej LNG terminal, which has two jetties and a nameplate capacity expanded to 22.5 million tonnes a year.
ONGC Petro additions (OPaL)
Dual-feed cracker in the Dahej SEZ with polyethylene, polypropylene, benzene and butadiene units.
Reliance Industries
Dahej complex making PTA, PET, ethylene dichloride and PVC, plus a Reliance jetty.
Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals (GACL)
Caustic soda and chemicals plant at Dahej, including the GNAL joint venture with NALCO.
Deepak Group
Deepak Chem Tech runs a fluorination plant at Dahej; Deepak Nitrite bought further land in Dahej-2.
Turnaround and EPC contractors
Engaged project by project by each operator; scope and approved-equipment rules are set per site.

Classified units and areas

LNG tank, vaporiser and send-out area
Methane-rich gas at cryogenic and ambient temperatures, with compressors and pipeline metering nearby.
Cracker furnaces and cold section
Ethylene, propylene and hydrogen-bearing streams where gas group IIC is decided.
Polymer silos, extrusion and bagging
Polyethylene and polypropylene powder and pellets, creating combustible dust where handled.
Liquid chemical terminal and jetties
Ship-to-shore transfer of liquid chemicals and feedstocks through loading arms into tank farms.
Chlor-alkali and chlorine-derivative plants
Hydrogen is a by-product of caustic soda production, so hydrogen areas appear inside the plant.
Fluorination and speciality chemical blocks
Batch reactors with solvent charging and drum handling, classified by the operator.

What Dahej does to portable equipment

Dahej is hot, humid in the monsoon, salty near the water, and dense with plants owned by different companies. Those conditions, plus a mix of gas and dust hazards, decide how a handset is sealed, powered, managed and documented.

Gulf of Khambhat heat and monsoon rain

Gujarat summers are very hot and the monsoon brings heavy rain and sustained humidity. A handset in a tank farm or on a jetty meets both. IP68 sealing addresses water and dust ingress, but the ambient range an Ex phone may be used in is whatever the certificate states, and an evaluation should include a hot, wet month rather than assume.

Tidal estuary and salt air

Dahej is on an estuarine coast with large tidal movement, and the jetties and terminal areas sit in salt-laden air. Salt attacks connectors, speaker meshes and seals over months. A sealed body helps, but rinsing and inspection routines are worth agreeing with each operator before a fleet is issued.

Hydrogen and ethylene set the gas group

LNG send-out is mainly methane, but the cracker and chlor-alkali sides bring ethylene and hydrogen. Hydrogen belongs to gas group IIC, and a handset marked only for IIA or IIB would be left at the gate on those units. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 lets one device cover the whole cluster, subject to the certificate.

Gas and dust under one fleet

Cracker units are a gas problem; polymer silos and bagging halls are a dust problem. Zone 21 is part of the design target for that reason, so one phone can follow an inspector from a furnace to a bagging line. Which areas it may enter is set by the certificate and by the site's own area classification.

Several permit regimes on one coast

An LNG terminal, a cracker, a chlor-alkali plant and a port terminal each run their own permit-to-work system and equipment acceptance rules. Approval at one gate does not carry to the next. Contractors moving between them need the same documented evidence each time, and each operator's HSE team decides what is accepted.

Gujarati, Hindi and English on one fleet

Crews at Dahej mix local workers with contractors from across India, so interface language varies. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets an operator push one approved configuration to every phone. Gujarati and other languages should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Use cases · Dahej

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

LNG01

Terminal rounds and ship-berthing support

Operators on the tank and vaporiser areas log readings, photograph a valve or flange, and call the control room from the same device. During a cargo, people from the terminal, the shipping agent and a surveyor coordinate at the jetty. One managed phone for checklists and photographs can cut the number of radios and clipboards carried, within whatever the site's permit allows.

Petrochemicals02

Cracker and polymer unit inspections

An inspection engineer on a cracker round moves between furnace, cold section and downstream polymer units. A phone designed for both gas and dust areas allows a photograph attached to an asset tag and a note to the shift in-charge without leaving the area. Tag scanning over NFC supports this where the plant has fitted tags.

Chlor-alkali and chemicals03

Hydrogen and chlorine area checks

Plants that make caustic soda and chlorine derivatives handle hydrogen and toxic chlorine side by side. The IS-04Z1 supports Bluetooth pairing so a detector reading can be logged against an asset tag, but a personal gas detector remains the safety device, and no phone replaces it.

Port and terminals04

Liquid chemical transfer supervision

Transfers of liquid chemicals through loading arms involve the port, the terminal operator, the vessel and the receiving plant. A supervisor can photograph a connection, record a tank reference and message the receiving shift from the jetty head. Which jetty areas count as classified, and what may be carried there, is set by the terminal operator.

Questions · Dahej

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Dahej today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Dahej?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind.

Which approvals will a Dahej plant ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. Each operator then applies its own acceptance rules, so confirm the requirement with its HSE and procurement teams.

Is gas group IIC really needed at an LNG terminal?

LNG send-out is mainly methane, which is a lower gas group. But Dahej also has cracker and chlor-alkali units where hydrogen and ethylene are present, and a single fleet that moves between plants is simpler with a IIC marking target. Confirm the group for your own area with your competent person.

Who would support and repair the phones near Dahej?

Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. Ask early about turnaround time, spares and how a damaged unit is exchanged, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.

Can contractors use the same phones at more than one Dahej site?

That is each operator's decision. A terminal, a cracker complex and a port terminal run their own access and equipment rules, so approval at one does not carry to another. EMM enrolment lets an operator apply its own policy to a contractor phone for the job and remove it when the crew demobilises.
