Explosion proof phone for Hazira, Surat

Hazira lies on the Tapi estuary, about 15 km from Surat in Gujarat, and packs gas processing, an LNG terminal, a fertiliser plant, a steel works and heavy engineering into one coastal strip. Natural gas, ammonia and process gases are handled alongside large fabrication and port activity. People in the classified areas move between control rooms, compressor halls, tank areas and busy yards, and the phone they carry must be approved before it passes the gate. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The site: Hazira, a gas and heavy-industry coast

Hazira is a long-established industrial area on the Tapi river mouth, south-west of Surat. It combines energy, chemicals and metals under several different owners, with a deep-water port as the shared gateway. Gas arrives by pipeline and by sea as LNG; fertiliser, steel and fabricated equipment leave by road, rail and ship. Because each owner has its own permit and equipment rules, a contractor may work under several of them in one month.

What Hazira does to portable equipment

Hazira is a hot, humid estuarine coast with a strong monsoon, and its industries are very different: gas, ammonia, steel and heavy fabrication. The handset has to suit gases with different properties and a mixed workforce of operators and contractors.

Natural gas and LNG at gas group IIA

Methane is gas group IIA, so the gas terminal and processing plant are not the demanding case on group alone. But ignition sources near compressors and send-out areas are tightly controlled, and a phone still needs a recognised marking for the area. The final marking is whatever the certificate states.

Hydrogen and ammonia in the fertiliser plant

Ammonia synthesis uses hydrogen, which falls in gas group IIC, and ammonia is toxic as well as flammable. The IS-04Z1 marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 covers the higher group. No phone replaces a personal gas detector, which stays the safety device in any ammonia area.

Dust in fertiliser granulation and bagging

Urea granulation and bagging create dust as well as gas. Zone 21 is part of the design target for the IS-04Z1, but whether an area is classified for dust is a matter for the operator's area classification drawings and the dust properties involved.

Hot, humid estuarine air with a heavy monsoon

Hazira's coast is hot and humid, with a pronounced monsoon from June to September. Water, condensation and salt-laden air from the estuary all act on seals, ports and speaker meshes. IP68 sealing is aimed at that, though service life in a wet season is for an evaluation to confirm.

Many owners, many gates

Gas, fertiliser, steel and port operations each run separate permit and equipment rules. Approval at one gate does not carry to the next, and each operator's HSE team decides what is accepted. Contractors need the same documented certificate evidence at every site, and the paperwork often matters more than the hardware.

Gujarati, Hindi and English among operators and contractors

Plant staff and contract workmen come from Gujarat and from other states, and interface language varies. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets one approved configuration go to every phone. Gujarati and other languages should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Use cases · Hazira

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Gas processing01

Compressor hall and separator rounds

An operator on a gas plant round takes readings, photographs a leaking seal and calls the control room from one device. Without an approved handset, these tasks fall back on paper and radios. Which areas the phone may enter depends on the certificate and the plant's own classification.

LNG02

Terminal and truck-loading inspections

LNG tanks, send-out areas and truck-loading bays involve operator staff, drivers and inspectors in a fast-moving, classified setting. One managed phone for checklists, photographs and calls reduces the paper carried, subject to the terminal's own rules on portable equipment near loading.

Fertiliser03

Ammonia and urea plant walkdowns

Walkdowns of ammonia storage and the urea granulation area need photographs, tag scans and a quick message to the permit holder. Paired with the operator's detector over Bluetooth, the phone can log a reading against the tag where it was taken. The detector still decides whether anyone stays.

Contractors04

Shutdown crews across several owners

Turnaround and fabrication contractors moving between gas, fertiliser and steel sites meet different rulebooks. A managed phone with one enrolment profile and documented certification gives each operator the same evidence set, though each remains free to accept it or ask for more.

Questions · Hazira

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Hazira today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Hazira?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be given in writing against a stated quantity and site. Be cautious of any supplier quoting a firm figure and delivery date for an uncertified Ex handset.

Which approvals will a Hazira plant ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. Each plant or terminal then applies its own acceptance rules, so confirm the requirement with its HSE and procurement teams.

Which gas group matters at Hazira?

It depends on the unit. Natural gas and LNG are gas group IIA, while hydrogen in ammonia synthesis is IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 covers the higher group so one device can serve the whole cluster, but the final marking is whatever the certificate states.

Who will support and repair the phone in Gujarat?

Support will be provided by SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. Service arrangements, repair turnaround and spares have not been published, and none should be assumed. Intrinsically safe equipment should be repaired only by a party with the right authority, so ask for the repair route in writing.

Can the phone read a gas detector's measurements?

The IS-04Z1 supports Bluetooth, so readings from a compatible detector can be logged against an asset tag, depending on the detector's own interface and the operator's app. Compatibility must be checked per detector model in an evaluation. The detector remains the safety device and the phone only records what it reports.
