Explosion proof phone for Chennai, Tamil Nadu

North Chennai is the industrial end of the city. The Manali belt holds a refinery, a fertiliser complex and a propylene oxide producer within a short distance of each other, and further up the coast at Ennore the Kamarajar Port hosts an LNG import terminal. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is an ex phone built for people who work in the classified areas of that corridor. It is pre-launch: what an engineering review sees today is a datasheet and a certification programme, not a certificate, so this page is about fit and process rather than supply.

The Manali belt and the Ennore coast

The industrial area is a northern strip rather than a single estate. Manali holds the refinery and its neighbours, a crude pipeline links the refinery to Chennai Port, and Kamarajar Port at Ennore adds a gas import terminal. The city's creeks, canals and reservoirs run through this strip, and the surrounding neighbourhoods are dense. That shapes both the hazard and how closely each operator watches who carries what into a plant.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL)
Operates the Manali refinery, a subsidiary of Indian Oil, with an expansion of crude capacity planned.
IndianOil LNG at Ennore
LNG import and regasification terminal at Kamarajar Port, Ennore.
Madras Fertilizers
Manufactures ammonia, urea and complex fertilisers at its Manali complex.
Manali Petrochemicals
Produces propylene oxide, propylene glycols and polyols at Manali.
Kamarajar Port, Ennore
The port on whose land the LNG terminal sits, giving marine and terminal crews a shared perimeter.
Chennai Port crude pipeline
A crude pipeline carrying imported crude from Chennai Port to the refinery.

Classified units and areas

Crude distillation and hydroprocessing
Refinery units where hydrocarbon vapour and hydrogen service are ordinary, and group IIC governs.
Crude receipt and tank farms
Pipeline arrival, pumping and tankage for crude and products, with floating-roof and fixed-roof storage.
LNG tanks, vaporisers and send-out
Cryogenic storage, regasification and gas send-out, classified for flammable gas.
Ammonia and fertiliser plants
Synthesis gas, hydrogen and ammonia service, plus the chemical handling around granulation and storage.
Propylene oxide and glycol units
Very flammable, reactive liquid process areas with their own tank and loading facilities.
Jetty and marine transfer areas
Berths where gas and liquid cargo moves between vessels and shore pipework.

What Chennai does to portable equipment

A handset specified for a dry-climate refinery does not carry over unchanged. North Chennai is hot, humid and salt-laden, exposed to the northeast monsoon and to flooding, and divided between several operators, each with its own permit rules.

Hot, humid, salt-laden air

Chennai is a hot coastal city and the Manali and Ennore areas sit close to the sea, so portable equipment faces humidity, condensation and salt on connectors and seals more than it faces extreme dry heat. IP68 sealing and rugged build address that. The T4 class governs surface temperature, and the certified ambient range will be set by the certificate.

Flooding as a design condition

Heavy northeast-monsoon rain and cyclones can flood low-lying plant areas and force precautionary shutdowns. North Chennai plants plan for floods. A sealed, dust- and water-proof handset is a practical fit for crews working in standing water during restoration.

Hydrogen and syngas set the group

Refinery hydroprocessing and ammonia plant synthesis gas both involve hydrogen, which falls in group IIC. Using a lower-group device would split the corridor by unit. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so that one equipment decision follows a technician between the refinery, the fertiliser plant and the gas terminal.

A dense, scrutinised neighbourhood

The Manali cluster sits close to housing, and operators here are used to documentation being checked. A verbal assurance about a handset will not satisfy anyone. Certification is in progress and we say so; the certificate, when issued, is what belongs in the operator's file.

Tamil, English and mixed contractor crews

Operations and contract labour often work in Tamil, while engineering, EPC and vendor teams work in English. Android 16 supports both languages and lets a plant push its own application and camera policy through EMM enrolment. Confirm language packs and keyboards for your fleet during evaluation.

Several perimeters in one corridor

A refinery, a fertiliser complex and an LNG terminal each run their own gate, permit-to-work and equipment review. Anyone planning a fleet that moves between them should expect separate sign-offs and should ask each operator for its requirement in writing before committing to a number of devices.

Use cases · Chennai

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Unit rounds and turnaround permits

A field operator on a distillation or hydroprocessing round has to log readings, photograph a weeping flange and reach the control room without leaving the unit. During turnarounds the contractor and permit load rises sharply, and one approved device that carries photographs, checklists and voice removes a step from each hand-off.

LNG02

Terminal rounds and cargo operations

Cryogenic plant calls for visual inspection of insulation, vaporisers and flanges. Cargo operations put marine, terminal and vessel teams on one jetty in a narrow window. A handset designed for group IIC lets an inspector record and send findings from the deck rather than carrying notes back across the terminal.

Fertilisers03

Ammonia plant inspection

An ammonia plant combines high pressure, hydrogen-rich gas and toxic release risk in one footprint. Inspection staff need to capture a reading, a photograph and a location while moving through classified areas. One sealed device with Bluetooth pairing to a portable gas detector keeps the reading attached to the record.

Chemicals04

Propylene oxide and glycol handling

Propylene oxide is a highly flammable and reactive liquid, so the tanks, pump bays and loading points around it are tightly controlled. A technician who can scan a tag, photograph a gland and call the control room from the area, without a walk to the clean side, keeps the round complete.

Questions · Chennai

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Chennai today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 certification, with TÜV in Germany, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Chennai?

None is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Who approves a handset for a Manali refinery or fertiliser plant?

The operator's engineering and HSE review decides for its own site, working from the area classification and the certificate. Statutory approval in India is covered on the India overview page. Approval at one plant does not transfer to another, so ask each operator for its requirement in writing.

Does group IIC cover both the refinery and the LNG terminal?

That is the intent behind specifying group IIC rather than IIB. Hydrogen at the refinery and fertiliser plant falls in IIC, while natural gas sits in a lower group, so one marking covers both. Confirm the classification of each area with your own competent person; the handset is a design target until certified.

How would it be supported and repaired in Chennai?

A phone holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. Battery replacement and repair would run through SAMS and the Indian partner it is appointing. That channel is not in place yet, and the terms will be published before any fleet ships.

How does it cope with monsoon flooding and salt air?

IP68 sealing and a rugged build address water, dust and salt-laden air. These are environmental ratings, not hazardous-area ones, so they sit alongside the Ex marking, never in place of it. Whether a device may be used in a flooded plant is for the operator's permit system to decide.
