Explosion proof phone for Panipat, Haryana

Panipat is a landlocked refinery and petrochemical complex about 90 km north of Delhi, where crude arrives by pipeline rather than by ship. One site holds a refinery, a naphtha cracker with polymer lines, and an aromatics complex making paraxylene and purified terephthalic acid. That is a lot of different classified areas under one fence, and a phone that cannot move between them is a nuisance. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.

The site: IndianOil's Panipat complex

Panipat is run by Indian Oil Corporation as a refinery with a petrochemical complex built around it. The refinery was expanded to 15 million tonnes a year, and a further expansion has been reported. Crude is delivered by pipeline from the west coast, and products leave by pipeline, rail and road into the Delhi and northern markets.

What Panipat does to portable equipment

Panipat is inland, so the demands differ from a coastal refinery: wide swings between summer and winter, dust and fog rather than salt, and a site dense with different process chains. Those facts shape how one handset is specified and managed.

Summer heat and winter fog on the plain

Panipat lies on the northern plain, where summers are hot and winters can be cold and foggy. A handset must hold its sealing and battery behaviour across that range. The certified ambient range is whatever the certificate states, and an evaluation through a hot afternoon and a cold shift start is the sensible test.

Ethylene and hydrogen under one fence

A cracker complex carries ethylene, which sits in group IIB, and a refinery carries hydrogen, which sits in IIC. With a marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, one handset is intended to serve both sides. The area classification drawings, not the phone, decide where it may go.

Polymer powder next to hydrocarbon gas

Polypropylene and polyethylene powder and pellets create combustible dust in silos, conveying lines and bagging areas, often near gas service. The Zone 21 design target is meant to avoid one device for the reactor deck and another for the bagging hall, subject to the final marking.

Many process chains, one permit culture

Cracker, glycol, aromatics and refinery units each have their own operating discipline, but contractors move between them on permits. A phone enrolled under the operator's EMM console can carry the same approved apps and restrictions across all of them, and be wiped when the crew demobilises.

A planned shutdown draws a large crew

Large units stop on a planned programme, and the contractor population inside the battery limits grows sharply. Camera policy, app lists and device ownership turn into real control questions at that point. EMM enrolment is how SAMS expects an operator to answer them, within whatever rules the site sets.

Hindi-speaking crews and English documents

Operations at Panipat run largely in Hindi and English, with engineering documents in English. Android 16 supports both with enterprise management, so a safety prompt or a checklist can be shown in the language the person reads. Confirm any further languages against the datasheet.

Use cases · Panipat

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Petrochemicals01

Cracker and cold-section rounds

An outside operator walks furnace bays, compressors and the cold section on a fixed round. Logging a reading, photographing a weeping flange and phoning the control room from one sealed device replaces a clipboard and a handheld radio, and it works the same in fog or heat.

Polymers02

Silo and bagging hall inspection

Inspecting a silo discharge, a dust collector or a bagging line is dust work with powder on every surface. A sealed phone that can be wiped down and used to photograph a condition in place gives the maintenance team a record without carrying a second device into a dust area.

Aromatics03

Paraxylene and PTA plant checks

Operators on an aromatics plant move between liquid-handling areas and the powder end of a PTA train. A device that records, photographs and messages in both gas and dust areas means the inspector does not swap equipment partway through a round. Final area limits come from the certificate.

Turnarounds04

Permit and isolation handling

During a planned shutdown, permit holders walk between the unit and the permit office all day. A managed handset that carries the permit, the isolation list and a contact directory keeps them in the unit, provided the operator's rules allow it and a certificate covers the area.

Questions · Panipat

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Panipat today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Panipat?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset should be treated with caution.

What approval does a Panipat unit need before a phone is allowed in?

India requires PESO approval for hazardous-area equipment, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, alongside BIS registration and WPC radio approval for the handset itself. IndianOil then applies its own acceptance process. Confirm what it requires with the plant's HSE and procurement teams rather than assuming.

Does the dust at a polymer plant need a different phone?

Not a different phone, but a dust rating. Polymer powder is combustible, and the site's classification drawings say whether an area is Zone 21 or Zone 22. The IS-04Z1 design target includes Zone 21 alongside Zone 1, and the final marking is whatever the certificate states.

Who would support and repair phones near Panipat?

Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. Ask early about exchange times and spares, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.

Can a contractor bring its own phone for a shutdown job?

Only if the operator accepts it. Equipment rules are set by IndianOil for each site and job, and approval elsewhere does not carry over. EMM enrolment lets the operator apply its own camera and app policy to a contractor handset for the duration of the work.
