Explosion proof phone for Mangalore, Karnataka

Mangalore is where Karnataka's hydrocarbon and chemical industry meets the Arabian Sea. A refinery and aromatics complex sits north of the city, an offshore crude mooring and underground crude storage tie into it, and a fertiliser plant faces the New Mangalore Port across the highway. The people who work in those classified areas carry a phone every shift, and the handset has to be approved before it crosses the gate. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The site: Mangalore, refinery to port

The cluster runs along the coast north of the city, from Panambur and the New Mangalore Port to the Mangalore Special Economic Zone. Crude comes in over water, both through the port's own berths and through a single point mooring set well offshore. Products and chemicals leave by road, rail and ship. Several owners share a short stretch of coast, so a contractor often meets more than one site rulebook in a single week.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL)
ONGC-promoted refinery north of Mangalore, receiving crude through the port and its own offshore mooring.
Aromatics complex (ex-OMPL)
Paraxylene and benzene plant in the SEZ beside the refinery, merged into MRPL in 2022.
Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves (ISPRL)
Underground rock-cavern crude storage at Mangalore, linked by pipeline to the offshore mooring.
Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF)
Fertiliser plant at Panambur using ammonia and phosphoric acid brought in through the port.
New Mangalore Port Authority
Port with dedicated berths for crude, LPG and petroleum products, plus a single point mooring.
Turnaround and EPC contractors
Engaged project by project by each operator; scope and approved-equipment rules are set per site.

What Mangalore does to portable equipment

Mangalore is a wet, humid, salty coast with a long monsoon, and the cluster is split between several owners. Those facts decide how a handset is sealed, charged, managed and documented more than any single hazard does.

Monsoon rain and humidity for months

Coastal Karnataka has a tropical monsoon climate, with heavy rain from June to September and humidity that stays high well beyond it. The failure mode is water and condensation in ports and seams. IP68 sealing is aimed at that, though the enclosure's service life in a wet season is something an evaluation should test, not assume.

Salt air at the quay and on the offshore line

The port berths and the shore end of the offshore crude line sit in salt-laden air. Salt works on connectors, speaker meshes and seals over months, so the sealed IP68 body matters as much as the electronics. Rinsing and inspection routines are worth agreeing with the operator before a fleet is issued.

Hydrogen on the refinery side, group IIC

Hydroprocessing units run hydrogen-rich gas, and hydrogen belongs to gas group IIC. A handset marked only for IIA or IIB would be left at the gate on those units. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so one device can be carried across the whole site, subject to the certificate.

One coast, several site rulebooks

A refinery, a port, a storage operator and a fertiliser plant each run their own permit and equipment rules. Approval at one gate does not carry to the next. Contractors who move between them need the same documented evidence each time, and each operator's HSE team decides what is accepted.

Imported ammonia and acid at the fertiliser plant

The fertiliser plant takes ammonia and phosphoric acid in through the port. Ammonia is toxic as well as flammable, and no phone replaces a personal gas detector. The IS-04Z1 supports Bluetooth pairing so readings from a detector can be logged against an asset tag, but the detector remains the safety device.

Kannada, Hindi and English on one fleet

Crews at a Karnataka coastal site mix local staff with contractors from other states, so interface language varies. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets the operator push one approved configuration to every phone. Other interface languages should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Use cases · Mangalore

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Hydroprocessing unit rounds

An outside operator on a hydrotreater round logs readings, photographs a leaking flange and calls the control room from the same device. In a wet season, a sealed phone avoids the usual choice between a notebook that gets soaked and a report written later from memory. Which areas it may enter depends on the certificate and the site's own classification.

Aromatics02

Paraxylene and benzene transfer checks

Aromatics streams move through transfer lines and storage between the process plant and the port. An inspector can photograph a joint, attach it to the asset tag and send it from the line, rather than carrying paper back to the shift office. Tag scanning over NFC supports this where the plant has fitted tags.

Marine and storage03

Berth and cavern-side operations

Crude, LPG and product transfers at the quay, and valve and booster stations on the line to the storage caverns, involve people from the port, the operator and a surveyor. One managed phone for checklists, photographs and calls reduces the number of radios and clipboards carried along a berth.

Fertiliser04

Ammonia area inspections

Inspection of ammonia storage and handling needs photographs, readings and a quick message to the permit holder. Paired with the operator's detector over Bluetooth, the IS-04Z1 can record a reading against the tag where it was taken. The detector still decides whether a person may stay in the area.

Questions · Mangalore

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Mangalore today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Mangalore?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind.

Which approvals will a Mangalore plant ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. Each operator then applies its own acceptance rules, so confirm the requirement with its HSE and procurement teams.

Does the humid, salty coast change which phone we should evaluate?

Yes. The IP68 body and sealed ports are the relevant features, and the ambient range is whatever the certificate states. Ask for an evaluation unit and run it through a monsoon month on the coast before fleet decisions, with the cleaning and inspection routine you would actually use.

Who would support and repair the phones near Mangalore?

Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. Ask early about turnaround time, spares and how a damaged unit is exchanged, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.

Can contractors use the same phones at more than one Mangalore site?

That is the operator's decision. A refinery, port and fertiliser plant each run their own access and equipment rules, so approval at one does not carry to another. EMM enrolment lets an operator apply its own policy to a contractor phone for the job and remove it when the crew demobilises.
