Explosion proof phone for Kochi, Kerala

Kochi is Kerala's industrial and port city, and it concentrates much of the state's hazardous-area work. A refinery at Ambalamugal, fertiliser and chemical plants along the Periyar at Eloor and at Ambalamedu, an LNG terminal in the Puthuvype SEZ and the oil berths of Cochin Port all sit within a short distance of each other. Anyone working in the classified parts of those sites carries a phone every shift, and the handset has to be approved first. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch: certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.

The site: Kochi, refinery to port

Kochi's industry is split between the refinery and chemical belt on the mainland, the fertiliser and chemical plants beside the Periyar river, and the port and LNG terminal on the coast. Crude and LNG arrive by sea, products leave by road, rail and pipeline, and a GAIL pipeline carries gas from the LNG terminal into the grid. The area is densely settled, so plants sit close to homes and roads.

What Kochi does to portable equipment

Kochi is a wet, humid, salty coast with heavy monsoon rain and plants squeezed into a densely populated area. Those facts decide how a handset is sealed, charged, managed and documented more than any single hazard does.

Heavy monsoon and year-round humidity

Kochi receives roughly 350 cm of rain a year, most of it in the south-west monsoon from June to September, and humidity stays high through the rest. The failure mode is water and condensation in ports and seams. IP68 sealing is aimed at that, though service life in a wet season is something an evaluation should test, not assume.

Salt air at the port and terminals

The LNG terminal, the LPG terminal and the port berths sit in salt-laden coastal air. Salt works on connectors, speaker meshes and seals over months. A sealed body helps, but rinsing and inspection routines are worth agreeing with each operator before a fleet is issued.

Hydrogen on the refinery side, group IIC

Hydroprocessing units run hydrogen-rich gas, and hydrogen belongs to gas group IIC. A handset marked only for IIA or IIB would be left at the gate on those units. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 lets one device cover the whole site, subject to the certificate.

Dense settlement around the plants

Plants at Ambalamugal and Eloor sit near towns, so operators tend to keep a close watch on leaks, odour and emissions. Quick photographs and reports from the person who sees the problem help the control room respond. Which areas a phone may enter remains set by the certificate and the site's own classification.

Several operators, several rulebooks

A refinery, an LNG terminal, an LPG terminal, a port and a fertiliser plant each run their own permit and equipment rules. Approval at one gate does not carry to the next. Contractors who move between them need the same documented evidence each time, and each operator's HSE team decides what is accepted.

Malayalam, Hindi and English on one fleet

Crews at Kochi mix Kerala staff with contractors from other states, so interface language varies. Android 16 supports English and Hindi with enterprise management, and EMM enrolment lets the operator push one approved configuration to every phone. Malayalam and other languages should be confirmed against the datasheet.

Use cases · Kochi

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Hydroprocessing unit rounds

An outside operator on a hydrotreater round logs readings, photographs a leaking flange and calls the control room from the same device. In the monsoon, a sealed phone avoids the usual choice between a soaked notebook and a report written later from memory. Which areas it may enter depends on the certificate and the site's own classification.

Petrochemicals02

Propylene and polymer project work

A refinery adding a polypropylene unit brings construction, commissioning and later powder handling to the same fence line. A phone designed for both gas and dust areas can follow an inspector from the propylene section to the polymer end. Tag scanning over NFC supports this where the plant has fitted tags.

LNG and LPG03

Terminal operations and loading

Terminal staff coordinate with a ship, a surveyor and the grid operator during a cargo. A single managed phone for checklists, photographs and calls reduces the radios and clipboards carried. Paired over Bluetooth with a personal gas detector, it can log a reading against an asset tag, but the detector remains the safety device.

Fertiliser and chemicals04

Ammonia and acid area inspections

Inspection of ammonia, sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid areas needs photographs, readings and a quick message to the permit holder. A sealed phone helps in a wet and corrosive environment, though chemical resistance of the enclosure should be checked against what the plant actually uses.

Questions · Kochi

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Kochi today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Div 1 certification is in progress at TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an explosion proof phone cost in Kochi?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time. Indicative pre-launch pricing can be issued in writing against a stated quantity and site, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind.

Which approvals will a Kochi plant ask for?

Hazardous-area equipment in India needs PESO approval, built on a recognised certificate such as IECEx, and the handset also needs BIS registration and WPC radio approval, as set out on the India page. Each operator then applies its own acceptance rules, so confirm the requirement with its HSE and procurement teams.

Does the Kerala monsoon change which phone we should evaluate?

Yes. The IP68 body and sealed ports are the relevant features, and the ambient range is whatever the certificate states. Ask for an evaluation unit and run it through a monsoon month on the coast before fleet decisions, with the cleaning and inspection routine you would actually use.

Who would support and repair the phones near Kochi?

Support and repair would come from SAMS together with the local partner SAMS is appointing for India. No partner, stock or service point is announced yet. Ask early about turnaround time, spares and how a damaged unit is exchanged, because a sealed Ex device should only be opened by an authorised centre.

Can contractors use the same phones at more than one Kochi site?

That is the operator's decision. A refinery, a terminal, a port and a fertiliser plant each run their own access and equipment rules, so approval at one does not carry to another. EMM enrolment lets an operator apply its own policy to a contractor phone for the job and remove it when the crew demobilises.
