Explosion proof phone for Songkhla, southern Thailand

Songkhla sits on the lower Gulf coast, far from the eastern seaboard where most Thai hazardous area work is concentrated, and it matters for two reasons that lie close together. Gas from the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area was brought ashore at Chana for separation into ethane, propane, LPG and natural gasoline, and a petroleum support base in the province serves operators working offshore in the Gulf. Anyone working at either place carries a phone into areas where an ordinary handset is unwelcome. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, with certification in progress.

Gas plant and offshore support base in Songkhla Province

Songkhla is better understood as a logistics and processing province than as an industrial estate. Offshore gas and condensate are served from shore through a support base with its own jetty, warehouses, yards and bulk storage, while the Trans Thai-Malaysia project built a pipeline and a gas separation plant to process Joint Development Area gas. Helicopters carry crews out to the platforms from the same coast. What follows is drawn from published company and press material; check current status with each operator.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

PTTEP
Runs the Petroleum Development Support Base in Songkhla, serving its own Gulf projects and other operators.
Chevron Thailand
Announced a new shore base and warehouse in Songkhla Province in 2017, consolidating smaller warehouses.
Mubadala Petroleum (Thailand)
Listed among the customers of the Songkhla support base for its Gulf of Thailand activity.
Carigali-PTTEPI
Listed as a base customer; the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area is supplied from offshore east of Songkhla.
Trans Thai-Malaysia (Thailand)
The PTT and Petronas project company that built the pipeline and the Songkhla gas separation plant.
Offshore helicopter operators
Thai Aviation Services and SFS Aviation both report flying offshore crews from Songkhla.

Classified units and areas

Gas separation plant, Chana
Recovers ethane, propane, LPG and natural gasoline from Joint Development Area gas arriving by subsea pipeline.
Pipeline landfall and receiving
Inlet facilities where the offshore line comes ashore; pressure, pigging and metering areas to be confirmed with the operator.
Product storage and loading
LPG and natural gasoline handling downstream of fractionation; the operator's area classification drawings govern entry.
Support base jetty
Vessel loading and discharge of supplies, fuel and drilling consumables for offshore platforms and rigs.
Bulk tanks and silos at the base
Liquid and powder storage for drilling fluids and cement; dust and vapour risks differ tank by tank.
Helicopter departure area
Crew check-in and aircraft refuelling at the offshore transfer point; portable electronics rules are set locally.

What Songkhla does to portable equipment

Songkhla has a different climate from the eastern seaboard, and its work is split between a process plant, a marine base and the road and air links that join them to the platforms. Each fit point below is design intent, not a certified claim.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

A rainy season that runs to the end of the year

The northeast monsoon brings the heaviest rain to this coast from October to January, with a short dry spell in February and March. Work on open jetties and pipe racks continues through it, so a handset has to be sealed against sustained wet weather. IP68 is the design target; the certified ambient range will be the compliance figure.

Salt air on a working quayside

A support base is a marine site. Spray and salt-laden air reach connectors, speaker meshes and seals continuously, and a handset that is rinsed down after a shift has to tolerate it. The enclosure design is therefore as relevant here as the electronics inside it.

Light hydrocarbons, with hydrogen as the exception

Ethane, propane and methane sit mostly in group IIA. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which exceeds that and also covers any hydrogen service on site. Buyers should still ask the operator which gas groups its area drawings assign to each unit.

Remote from a big service centre

Songkhla is a long way south of Bangkok and of the eastern seaboard service centres. Support from SAMS and the partner it is appointing will therefore matter more than at a site beside the capital. Buyers should ask early how repair, spares and loan units would be handled for a southern customer.

Mixed crews, contractors and languages

Base staff, vessel crews, plant operators and visiting contractors do not share a single employer. EMM enrolment lets an operator push its own policies onto a contractor phone for the length of a job and release it afterwards, with Thai and English on the same Android 16 build.

Photographs and position at a border area

The Gulf and the Joint Development Area involve more than one jurisdiction, and base and plant gates restrict photography. A 50 MP camera that the operator's console can switch off per site, and four-constellation GNSS for logging a location on a long quay, are designed for exactly that tension.

Use cases · Songkhla

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Gas processing01

Inspection rounds at the separation plant

An operator walking the fractionation and storage areas can photograph a seal weep or a corroded support, tag its position and send it before leaving the unit. A device designed for Zone 1 is meant to remove the need to walk back to a safe area to make a note.

Marine logistics02

Loading and discharge on the base jetty

Supply vessels load fuel, bulk materials and equipment for the platforms against a tight departure window. Checking a manifest, photographing seals and confirming a lift from the quay on one sealed handset is the use the design targets, subject to the base's own rules.

Offshore crews03

Pre-departure checks at the heliport

Crews gather at the departure point before transfer to the platforms. A managed handset that is locked to approved applications and a camera policy can be issued for the duty and returned afterwards, which suits shared pools of equipment far better than personal phones.

Contractors and turnarounds04

Shutdown crews at the plant and the base

Maintenance campaigns bring in outside contractors for a few weeks at a time. Enrolling their handsets under the site's policy, with a defined application list, keeps work-order photographs and permits inside the operator's own systems and ends at the close of the job.

Questions · Songkhla

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Songkhla today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 certification is in progress with TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

What is the price of an intrinsically safe phone for Songkhla?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is a conversation about quantity, site and support, and is given in writing.

Who decides whether a handset may enter the gas plant or the support base?

The operator of each site decides, against its own area classification drawings and permit rules. Thai practice references TIS standards administered by TISI, with factory safety under the Department of Industrial Works, and a handset also needs NBTC radio approval. Confirm the route with the operator and the authority concerned, and do not assume one answer covers both sites.

Is the gas here IIA or IIC?

Ethane, propane and methane are normally group IIA, so a IIA device would suit much of the light hydrocarbon work. The IS-04Z1 targets II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which covers IIA, IIB and IIC and so any hydrogen on site. The operator's classification drawing for each unit is what counts.

How would repair and support work this far south?

That is being planned rather than operating. SAMS handles support, and the local partner it is appointing would be the first line in Thailand. A buyer in Songkhla should ask before ordering how loan units, spares and return-for-repair would be handled, and obtain the answer in writing.

Can the phone be used on the offshore helicopter transfer?

Not as a statement about aviation rules. Helicopter operators set their own cabin rules for electronic devices, and those, together with the platform's own requirements, take precedence over any handset specification. Ask the helicopter operator and the platform owner before assuming any device travels offshore.
