Explosion proof phone for Map Ta Phut, Rayong

Map Ta Phut is where Thailand put its petrochemical industry. Built out from the 1980s on gas landed from the Gulf of Thailand, the estate holds crackers, aromatics, polymer trains, an LNG receiving terminal and its own deep-water port, inside a perimeter administered by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is an ex phone built for the people who work behind that gate. It is pre-launch: what an engineering review sees today is the datasheet and the certification programme, not a certificate. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

Behind the IEAT fence at Map Ta Phut

The estate is administered rather than owned by any one producer. IEAT runs the land, the utilities, the port and — the part that matters to anyone issuing equipment — a contractor access and permit regime sitting above each operator's own rules, so a handset here clears two gates. Rayong also carries a documented history of emissions and public-health concern, and the community along the fence line stays closely engaged with it. Compliance evidence for anything carried into a classified area is therefore examined more carefully here than at a comparable site elsewhere.

What Rayong does to portable equipment

A specification written for a desert refinery does not transfer here. The climate is different, the governing gas group sits at the hard end of the scale, and the workforce is not the same shape.

Humidity, not dry heat

Rayong runs warm and wet nearly all year, and the monsoon adds months of driven rain. The failure mode is water ingress and condensation inside a case, not thermal shutdown. IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at exactly that; the T4 temperature class answers the classification question separately.

Salt air off the Gulf of Thailand

The estate sits on the coast with its port at the front of it. Salt-laden air works continuously on connectors, seals and speaker meshes, which is why the enclosure matters here as much as the electronics behind it.

Group IIC is not optional

Ethylene and hydrogen are ordinary here, so IIC governs and a IIB device is the wrong equipment. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 — the line an instrumentation engineer at GC or SCGC looks for first.

Dust and gas in the same building

Polymer powder and pellet halls put combustible dust directly alongside gas service. The design covers Zone 21 as well as Zone 1, so a route running from a cracker through to bagging needs one equipment decision, not two.

Thai and English on one build

Operations run in Thai; engineering, EPC and expatriate contractor layers work in English. Both languages sit on one Android 16 image, so a mixed crew gets a single build and nobody reads a safety prompt in a second language.

Compliance that has to be documented

Given how closely equipment compliance is scrutinised around this estate, a verbal assurance is worth nothing. Certification is in progress and we say so; the certificate, when it issues, is what goes into the operator's file.

Use cases · Map Ta Phut

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Petrochemicals01

Cracker rounds in the wet season

A field operator on a furnace and compression round logs a reading, photographs a weeping flange and reaches the panel, in rain, without breaking the round. One sealed device carrying all three is the difference between a report written at the equipment and one written from memory later.

LNG02

Terminal and regasification checks

Cryogenic plant demands close visual inspection of insulation, vaporisers and flanges. A handset designed for group IIC lets an inspector record and send findings from the deck rather than carrying notes back across the terminal.

Polymers03

Powder halls and bagging lines

Pellet and powder areas are where a dust rating stops being theoretical. Zone 21 coverage alongside Zone 1 means one issued device follows a technician from the reactor deck into the bagging hall with no swap at the door.

Contractors and turnarounds04

Shutdown crews under the IEAT permit regime

A turnaround multiplies the contractor population and the permit traffic behind it. EMM enrolment lets a plant push its own camera and application policy onto a contractor phone for the job, then release it when the crew leaves.

Questions · Map Ta Phut

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Map Ta Phut today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its ATEX and IECEx certification is still running ahead of the Q4 2026 launch, with NEC 500 Class I Division 1 pursued alongside. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Rayong?

None is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something they cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Does IEAT approve the handset, or does the operator?

Both, in sequence. IEAT administers estate access and the permit regime governing who brings what through the gate; the decision on a specific device inside a plant belongs to that operator's engineering review. Neither happens on a promise.

Is an ex phone the same thing as a flameproof phone?

They are different protection concepts. Flameproof, marked Ex d, contains an ignition inside a heavy enclosure. The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, marked Ex ib, limiting circuit energy so ignition cannot occur at all — the practical route for something carried all shift. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Will it hold up through the Rayong monsoon?

That is what the sealing specification is for. IP68 sealing and a rugged build address sustained rain, humidity and coastal salt air. They are environmental ratings, not hazardous-area ones, so they sit alongside the Ex marking, never in place of it.

Does it cover the Map Ta Phut LNG terminal as well as the crackers?

That is the intent behind specifying group IIC rather than IIB. Ethylene at the crackers and the gas at the receiving terminal both fall under the harder group, so one equipment decision covers the estate instead of splitting it by plot.

How is it supported and repaired in Rayong?

A device holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened by a general phone workshop without invalidating it, so battery replacement and repair run through SAMS and the Thai partner it is appointing. Setting up that channel, with spares near the estate, is part of launch preparation.
