Explosion proof phone for Laem Chabang port, Chonburi

Laem Chabang is Thailand's largest deep-sea port, and it is a cargo site before it is anything else. No cracker, no refinery: what is hazardous here arrives on a ship, sits in a tank or a drum or a container, and leaves on a truck. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is an ex phone for the terminal crews, hauliers, surveyors and blending tenants who move that cargo. It is pre-launch: a datasheet and a certification programme, not a certificate. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

The hazardous side of a cargo port

Most of the port is boxes, cars and cranes, none of which needs a certified handset. The classified fraction is concentrated: the liquid bulk berths, the tank farms behind them, the bunker trade fuelling the ships, the dangerous-goods stacks in the yards, and the blending and drumming tenants on the industrial estate next door. All of it is worked by a long list of small employers rather than one operator.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Port Authority of Thailand
Owns the port and sets the access regime over every terminal inside it
Terminal concessionaires
Container and general-cargo terminals, each with its own gate and yard rules
Liquid bulk terminal operators
Jetty, pipeline and tankage services for chemicals, fuels and vegetable oils
Bunker suppliers
Marine fuel delivered by barge and truck, alongside and at anchorage
Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand
Administers the industrial estate holding the blending, packing and warehousing tenants
Freight forwarders, hauliers and surveyors
Independent firms whose staff enter classified areas without being on a terminal payroll

Classified units and areas

Liquid bulk jetties and loading arms
Gas classified through connection, transfer and draining, with the hose party at the flange
Tank farms and bunded storage
Vents, gauge hatches, pump seals and manway work, zoned tighter than the bund
Chemical blending and drumming halls
Open solvent transfer into drums and IBCs, where vapour collects indoors
Bunkering barges and transfer points
Manifolds and couplings on a moving deck, classified while the transfer runs
IMDG dangerous-goods stacks
Segregated storage where one leaking box makes an ordinary yard row hazardous
Tank cleaning and slops handling
Confined-space entry into tanks that held the last cargo, plus the slops that come out
Built for local conditions

Why a port is a harder equipment problem than a plant

A refinery issues phones to its own people under one policy. A port has no such luxury, and eastern seaboard weather is unkind to whatever it does issue.

A dozen employers, one classified area

A blending tenant, a haulier, a cargo surveyor and a bunker barge crew can stand on the same jetty in one afternoon under four different contracts. Policy has to travel with the person rather than the plot, so EMM and MDM enrolment is a governance question here, not an IT convenience.

The cargo changes, the classification cannot

A tank that held a vegetable oil last quarter may hold a solvent this one, and specifying against today's manifest is how a site buys the wrong hardware. The basis is the worst case the berth is licensed to handle, which is why the marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Cameras at a customs boundary

Photography at a port gate is a customs and security question as much as a safety one, and terminals answer it differently. Central control of the 50 MP camera lets one build serve a terminal that forbids it and a tenant that wants every damaged drum photographed.

Monsoon rain arriving mid-transfer

Chonburi's wet season does not wait for a hose to come off, and work carries on through it. IP68 sealing and rugged build address driven rain and standing water on a deck; they are environmental ratings and never substitute for the Ex marking.

Salt, humidity and washdown between them

Gulf air, year-round humidity and the freshwater washdown afterwards attack seals, meshes and connectors together. A handset that beats one and not the others fails inside a season.

Thai crews, English documents

Yard and jetty work runs in Thai; bills of lading, safety data sheets and charterer correspondence arrive in English. Android 16 carries both on one image, so nobody reads a hazard warning in a second language.

Use cases · Laem Chabang

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Liquid bulk01

Hose connection and transfer watch at the berth

The operator connecting an arm and standing the transfer watch needs the control room, the vessel, and a record of what the flange looked like before pressure went on. One intrinsically safe device shortens a sign-out list that is already long.

Bunkering02

Barge deliveries alongside and at anchorage

A bunker delivery is a timed job between two crews who may not share a language, and a quantity dispute has to be evidenced while the hose is still on. Reaching the office from a wet barge deck, photographs attached, matters more here than any other feature.

Estate tenants03

Blending and drumming on the industrial estate

Decanting solvent into drums puts a small workforce in a genuinely classified room daily, usually under a company too small to run a device programme of its own. One enrolled handset covers the hall and the paperwork either side of it.

Dangerous goods04

IMDG inspection in the container yards

A dangerous-goods inspector walks stacks, checks placards and segregation, and occasionally finds a box that is weeping. Four-constellation GNSS pins the row and bay, which a scribbled note never does reliably.

Questions · Laem Chabang

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Laem Chabang today?

No. The IS-04Z1 has not launched and its certification is still running ahead of Q4 2026. Nothing enters a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. Available now: the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation unit.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Laem Chabang?

There is no published figure. Pricing follows certification, and a supplier quoting a firm number today for an uncertified Ex device is promising what they cannot control. Send quantity, terminals and timing, and pre-launch pricing goes back in writing.

Who has to approve it — the Port Authority or the terminal?

The terminal or tenant whose classified area you are entering makes the equipment decision; the Port Authority governs access and conduct across the port. A contractor usually clears both, and neither approves anything on a verbal assurance.

Is a flameproof phone the same as this one?

No. Flameproof, marked Ex d, contains an ignition inside a heavy enclosure, which is why such equipment tends to be fixed and weighty. This handset uses intrinsic safety, marked Ex ib, keeping circuit energy below the level that can ignite anything.

What about drum stores and other dusty areas?

The design targets Zone 21 for combustible dust alongside Zone 1 for gas, so a route from a jetty through a blending hall to a packing area is one equipment decision. Both appear on the certificate once it issues.

How would it be supported in Chonburi?

An Ex certificate does not survive a general phone shop opening the case, so batteries and repairs run through SAMS and the Thai partner it is appointing, with parts held near the eastern seaboard.

Can our contractors carry it too, on their own contracts?

That is the intended pattern. Enrolment lets a terminal push its own camera, application and network policy onto a handset for the length of a job and release it afterwards. It is how a shared classified area gets one equipment standard instead of six.
