Explosion proof phone for Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is not a petrochemical estate, but it is where Thailand's energy decisions are made and where some of its fuel is still refined and moved. Bangchak runs a refinery in Phra Khanong inside the city, fuel pipelines and airport supply lines run out from it, and cargo handling on the Chao Phraya sits alongside dense neighbourhoods. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is an ex phone designed for the few classified areas in that picture. It is pre-launch: a datasheet and a certification programme today, not a certificate.

A refinery, pipelines and river terminals inside a city

Most of the capital is offices and homes, so the hazardous areas are narrow and well known. The Phra Khanong refinery is the main process site. Pipelines carry fuel from it, the Port Authority of Thailand runs the Khlong Toei port, and private terminals line the lower Chao Phraya just beyond the city boundary. Head offices of the major energy groups sit in the north of the city, away from the plant.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

Bangchak Corporation
Operates the Phra Khanong refinery in Bangkok, with a stated maximum capacity of 120,000 barrels a day.
Bangkok Fuel Pipeline and Logistics (BFPL)
Bangchak subsidiary running fuel pipelines, including aviation fuel lines to Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.
Port Authority of Thailand, Khlong Toei
Administers Bangkok Port, which has dangerous goods storage and published limits by cargo class.
Private Chao Phraya terminals
Terminals such as Thai Connectivity Terminal at Phra Pradaeng in Samut Prakan, just south of the city.
PTT and PTTEP head offices
Located on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Chatuchak: engineering and procurement teams who specify equipment for the plants.
SCG head office
Siam Cement Group's head office is on Siam Cement Road in Bang Sue, one of the energy and materials groups with plants in Rayong.

Classified units and areas

Refinery process units
Units producing gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and LPG, where vapour and hot hydrocarbon are the credible hazards.
LPG handling
Bangchak lists LPG and odourised LPG among Phra Khanong products, so gas storage and loading are classified.
Sustainable aviation fuel unit
Bangchak has built a sustainable aviation fuel unit at the refinery, with its own feed, hydrogen and product areas.
Pipeline pump and metering stations
Pumping and metering points along product lines running from the refinery towards depots and airports.
Airport fuel depots and hydrant systems
Aviation fuel storage and pipeline connections at the receiving end of the jet fuel lines.
River and port dangerous goods areas
Berths and dangerous goods storage where cargo handlers meet flammable liquids and gases.
Built for local conditions

What Bangkok does to portable equipment

Bangkok's conditions are the city's, not the plant's. Heat, traffic, dense neighbours and tight rules on photography shape how a handset is issued far more than a remote estate would.

Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

A refinery with houses on its fence

Plants in the middle of a city carry far more public attention than estate plants. Anything photographed or recorded can leave the site within minutes. Central control of the 50 MP camera through EMM or MDM enrolment lets security allow photographs in a work order and nowhere else.

Hydrogen and light gases set the group

Fuel refining and a sustainable aviation fuel unit both involve hydrogen at some point in the chain, and hydrogen belongs to gas group IIC. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so one device is not refused at part of the plant because of its gas group.

Hot, humid, flood-prone city

Bangkok is hot and humid all year, with the wet season from about May, and low-lying riverside land floods. Handsets in terminals and depots meet rain, standing water and condensation. IP68 sealing and a rugged build address water ingress, while the certificate, once issued, sets the permitted ambient range.

Head office safe area, field hazardous area

An engineer based at an energy group's head office is in a safe area all day and only enters a classified one on a site visit. The same Android 16 device, managed from one console, covers both without a separate phone for the visit.

Dangerous goods rules differ by terminal

Carrier notices have described Bangkok terminals accepting different dangerous goods classes, with the Port Authority's own terminal limiting storage of flammable gases and low flash point liquids. Rules change, so check each terminal for the current position before planning a classified area task.

Thai and English across corporate and field

Head office, engineering consultants and contractors work in both Thai and English, while field crews work mainly in Thai. One Android 16 build carries both, so a safety prompt reads the same in the office, at the pipeline station and at the berth.

Use cases · Bangkok

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Operator rounds in a city refinery

A field operator on a process unit logs readings, photographs a flange and reaches the control room without leaving the classified area. In a plant boxed in by roads, the walk to a safe area for a phone call is longer than it looks on the layout drawing, and every walk is time away from the unit.

Pipelines02

Station inspection along product lines

Pump and metering stations are small, unmanned or lightly staffed, and spread along a route. An inspector who arrives, scans the tag, records a reading and sends it with a position fix has closed the job at the asset. Four-constellation GNSS and a 4,000 mAh battery cover a full day away from base.

Aviation fuel03

Depot and hydrant checks

Aviation fuel supply depends on storage, pumping and pipeline connections that must be inspected against strict records. A handset designed for the classified parts of such a facility lets the inspector photograph a gauge or a valve lineup and attach it to the record without crossing the fence to do so.

Port and river04

Berth and dangerous goods yard inspections

A surveyor walking a dangerous goods stack or a river berth checks placards, segregation and a weeping container, often for a client who is not on the terminal payroll. One enrolled device carries the checklist, the photographs and the time stamp, and the operator can withdraw the policy when the job ends.

Questions · Bangkok

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Bangkok today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 certification, with TÜV in Germany, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Bangkok?

None is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Who decides whether a handset is allowed at the Phra Khanong refinery or a river terminal?

The operator's engineering and HSE review decides for its own site, working from the area classification and the certificate. TISI, the Department of Industrial Works and NBTC are covered on the Thailand overview page. A port or terminal adds its own access rules, so ask each operator in writing and expect approval at one site not to transfer to another.

Does a Bangkok office need an explosion proof phone?

No. An office is a safe area, and a certified Ex handset is only needed where there is a classified area. The case for one device is for engineers, inspectors and contractors who move between head office and plant. That should be confirmed against each facility's area classification, not assumed from the job title.

How would a handset be supported and repaired in Bangkok?

A phone holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. Battery replacement and repair would run through SAMS and the partner it is appointing in Thailand. That channel is not in place yet, and the terms will be published before any fleet purchase is expected.

Why is the river terminal list not longer?

Many Chao Phraya terminals lie just outside the Bangkok boundary, in Samut Prakan, and not every terminal handles flammable cargo. We name a place only where an operator demonstrably works. The operator's own dangerous goods list for the berth, not this page, tells you whether a classified area exists there.
