Explosion proof phone for Gulf of Thailand offshore platforms

The Gulf of Thailand is a shallow shelf sea, with fields in water depths of roughly 40 to 110 metres, and it is crowded with wellhead platforms, central processing platforms, pipelines and floating storage vessels run by several operators. People reach them by helicopter or by boat from shore bases at Songkhla and elsewhere, and spend days at a time in a classified, salt-laden environment. A handset decision there is about transfer rules, sealing and offshore support as much as about the gas group. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, with certification in progress.

Platforms, floating storage and the operators behind them

No single company owns the Gulf. PTTEP operates the Bongkot and Erawan blocks, Chevron reports operating areas across the Pattani Basin with its own floating storage and offloading vessels, and Mubadala has developed oil fields with wellhead platforms tied to a floating storage vessel. Shore bases and helicopter operators connect them to land. The list below follows published company material; a buyer should confirm which units each operator will classify and who sets the device rules.

Operators, EPCs and contractors

PTTEP
Operator of the G1/61 Erawan group and G2/61 Bongkot, with other Gulf projects such as Arthit.
Chevron Thailand
Reports Gulf operating areas including Benchamas, Chaba and Maliwan, with the Benchamas 2 and Pattani floating storage vessels.
Mubadala Energy
Has developed the Manora and Jasmine oil fields, with Manora tied by subsea pipeline to a floating storage vessel.
Support bases
The Songkhla Petroleum Development Support Base serves PTTEP, Chevron and Mubadala projects with jetty and warehouse services.
Offshore helicopter operators
Thai Aviation Services reports flights to platforms from Songkhla and from U-Tapao in Rayong.
Vessel and platform contractors
Marine, drilling, maintenance and inspection crews who work on the platforms without being on an operator payroll.

Classified units and areas

Wellhead platforms
Wellbays and wellhead areas where gas-bearing equipment sits in open, ventilated structures.
Central processing platforms
Separation, dehydration and compression modules, with treatment of produced water on some facilities.
Floating storage and offloading vessels
Crude and condensate storage with cargo transfer; marine rules and class society requirements also apply.
Living quarters and accommodation modules
Classified-area boundary, airlocks and muster points; the handset question here is where it may be switched on.
Helidecks and boat landings
Transfer points where the device rules of the aviation or marine operator apply before any platform rule.
Subsea pipeline risers and pig traps
Launchers, receivers and riser areas on the lines between platforms and to shore.
Built for local conditions

What the Gulf of Thailand does to portable equipment

Offshore work in the Gulf is fixed by distance, weather and the transfer chain. A handset is judged against rough seas and strict boarding rules before it is judged on features. The points below are design intent measured against the sea and the platform, not certified claims.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Two monsoons and a hot sea in between

The southwest monsoon arrives from about May and the northeast monsoon follows later in the year, each bringing rain and rougher seas, with hot humid weather in between. Open platform decks are wet and salty for most of the year. IP68 sealing is the design floor; the certified ambient range is the compliance figure.

Methane offshore, but one device for the whole route

Offshore gas is mainly methane, which sits in group IIA, so the platform itself does not always need IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is stricter and means the same handset can follow a worker ashore into hydrogen service. The operator's area classification governs each unit.

A transfer chain with its own rules

Crews reach the platforms by helicopter or vessel, and the aircraft or vessel operator sets its own rules for electronic devices before the platform does. A handset spec is not a permission; buyers should ask the helicopter company and the platform owner separately what travels offshore.

Days at a time away from shore

Offshore shifts last longer than onshore ones, and recharging means going back through a boundary where a charger may not be allowed. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a full working period with the camera and the four-constellation GNSS in use, but actual endurance depends on the configuration.

Remote support and Android management

A platform may be hours from the shore, and a support call is a long wait. EMM enrolment lets the operator's IT team push applications, camera policy and updates to a fleet of handsets onshore before they travel, which suits offshore, where there is no engineer to visit.

Evidence that has to cross a marine boundary

A floating storage vessel is both a process facility and a ship. Marine class and flag requirements sit beside the hazardous area rules, so any handset conclusion has to be agreed with the vessel owner and the operator and recorded in the platform's permit documentation, not just on a datasheet.

Use cases · Gulf of Thailand

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Wellhead platforms01

Round-the-deck inspection with a position fix

An operator walking a wellhead platform can photograph a leaking flange or corroded support and tag it with a position and time. On a deck with few landmarks, a coordinate and a picture are easier to act on than a description sent from the control room at the end of a shift.

Processing platforms02

Compression and separation module checks

Process modules need frequent rounds with gauge readings and defect photographs. A single device that can hold a checklist, take the photograph and sync later when a link is available avoids the rewriting of paper notes in the accommodation block.

Floating storage03

Cargo transfer records at the offloading point

When a tanker connects to a floating storage vessel for offloading, records of hoses, seals and checks matter. A handset designed for the zone around the transfer point can capture them in place, subject to the vessel's own marine and cargo transfer procedures.

Contractors and campaigns04

Drilling and maintenance crews on rotation

Drilling, inspection and maintenance campaigns bring contractors whose own phones are not allowed. A managed pool of handsets, enrolled for the campaign and released afterwards, lets the operator keep photographs and permits inside its own systems.

Questions · Gulf of Thailand

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone for the Gulf of Thailand today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 certification is in progress with TÜV in Germany ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

What is the price of an intrinsically safe phone for offshore use?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Who approves a handset for a Gulf platform?

The platform operator decides, using its own area classification and permit system. Thai practice references TIS standards administered by TISI and international IEC 60079 evidence, and a handset needs NBTC radio approval. Floating storage vessels add marine requirements. Confirm the full route with the operator and the authorities concerned.

Does offshore gas need a IIC rated handset?

Offshore gas is mainly methane, which is group IIA, so IIC is not always the platform requirement. The IS-04Z1 marking target of Ex ib IIC T4 is higher and covers IIA, IIB and IIC, including any hydrogen. Each platform's classification drawing determines what applies where.

How would support work for offshore customers?

SAMS provides support, and the partner it is appointing would be the first line in Thailand. Offshore customers should settle in advance how a faulty handset is returned from a platform, how loan units are held at the shore base, and what a response time means in writing.

Can a handset be carried on the helicopter or vessel to a platform?

That is decided by the aircraft or vessel operator and the platform owner, not by the handset specification. Cabin rules on electronic devices differ between operators and are separate from hazardous area approval. Ask both before assuming any device travels offshore, and expect to supply certificates when they exist.
