Explosion proof phone for Ban Chang, Rayong

Ban Chang is the westernmost district of Rayong province, a coastal strip of beaches and fishing communities with heavy industry at one edge and an airfield at the other. Asia Industrial Estate, where Dow, SCG and Solvay built a petrochemical complex, carries a Ban Chang address, and U-Tapao airport is planned to grow into an aviation hub. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is an ex phone designed for the classified areas of both. It is pre-launch: a datasheet and a certification programme today, not a certificate.

Asia Industrial Estate and the U-Tapao corridor

Ban Chang district is a small coastal district of Rayong province. Industry is concentrated in Asia Industrial Estate, usually grouped with the Map Ta Phut area, while U-Tapao serves as both a naval airfield and a commercial airport. Beaches at Phala, Phayun and Nam Rin share the same coast, so a classified plant and a visitor area can sit within a few kilometres of each other.

What Ban Chang does to portable equipment

The district meets sea air, monsoon rain, aircraft ramps and a petrochemical plant in one postcode. A handset here needs to cope with the weather and with two very different security regimes.

Petrochemical gas and dust together

A cracker and its polyethylene lines put ethylene and hydrogen next to polymer powder. The design target covers Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so an operator walking from furnace to bagging carries one device. Whether each room is classified is the operator's call, and the handset follows it.

Hydrogen sets the group

Hydrogen appears in cracker hydrogenation and in hydrogen peroxide production chemistry, and it belongs to gas group IIC. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so one equipment decision is not split by plant area. Confirm each area against the operator's classification drawings.

Coastal salt and monsoon rain

Ban Chang faces the Gulf of Thailand and takes the southwest monsoon from about May. Salt-laden air attacks seals, connectors and speaker meshes, and rain falls on exposed pipe racks and aircraft ramps. IP68 sealing and a rugged build are aimed at water and salt, with the certificate fixing the ambient range.

A military and civil airfield

U-Tapao is a Royal Thai Navy airfield that also runs commercial flights. Photography and electronic devices are treated seriously at such sites, and rules differ on the military and civil sides. Central camera control through EMM or MDM enrolment lets the operator set that policy per person.

Fuel at the ramp

Aircraft refuelling involves fuel hydrants, refuellers and storage at the airport. Which parts of the fuel facility are classified is for its operator to say. A handset designed for Zone 1 lets a fuel inspector record a defect in a classified bay without a trip to a safe office.

Thai crews, international contractors

A joint-venture petrochemical plant and an airport project both bring international engineering firms alongside Thai crews. Android 16 carries Thai and English on one build, and a managed app list gives every crew the same permit and inspection tools.

Use cases · Ban Chang

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Petrochemicals01

Cracker and polymer rounds

An operator logs readings on a furnace or compression round, photographs a weeping flange and then moves on to a polymer line. One sealed handset designed for both gas and dust zones carries the report from the cracker deck to the powder hall in the rain, instead of two devices or a written note.

Chemicals02

Peroxide and oxide area inspections

Propylene oxide is a highly flammable liquid and hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidiser, so storage and transfer points are tightly controlled. An inspector who can scan a tag, photograph a gland and call the control room from the area, without a walk to the clean side, keeps the round complete.

Aviation03

Fuel depot and hydrant checks

An aviation fuel facility depends on tank, pump and hydrant records that must match the physical state. An inspector photographing a gauge or valve lineup at the point of work, with position and time attached, closes the record without crossing the airport fence to a fixed terminal.

Projects04

Construction and maintenance crews

Both the estate and the airport corridor draw large contractor crews for expansion and maintenance work. EMM enrolment lets the operator push its own camera and application policy to a contractor handset for the job, then withdraw it when the crew demobilises.

Questions · Ban Chang

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof phone in Ban Chang today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 certification, with TÜV in Germany, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Ban Chang?

None is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Does Asia Industrial Estate follow the same permit regime as Map Ta Phut?

That is for you to confirm. The estate is usually grouped with the Map Ta Phut area but has a Ban Chang address, so ask the estate operator and each plant which access rules and permits apply. TISI, the Department of Industrial Works and NBTC are covered on the Thailand overview page, and approval at one plant does not transfer to another.

Is hydrogen peroxide a gas group question?

Not directly. Peroxide is an oxidising liquid, and its hazards are different from a flammable gas. The gas group question comes from the flammable materials nearby, such as propylene oxide, ethylene and hydrogen. Your competent person decides each area's classification from the drawings, and the handset's IIC target is a design intent only until a certificate exists.

How would a handset be supported and repaired in Ban Chang?

A phone holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. Battery replacement and repair would run through SAMS and the partner it is appointing in Thailand. That channel is not in place yet, and the terms will be published before any fleet purchase is expected.

Can a handset be used at U-Tapao airport?

Only where the airport operator allows it and the area classification calls for it. The airport has military and civil sides, with separate security rules, and aircraft areas have their own restrictions on electronic devices. Ask the operator in writing, because a handset suited to a classified fuel bay may still be barred from the ramp.
