Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust in one route
A walk from a reactor bay to a silo hall crosses both. One device designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 means the operator carries one unit, not a gas phone and a dust phone.
SCG Chemicals runs naphtha crackers and polyolefin plants at Map Ta Phut in Rayong, which makes it one of the places in Thailand where an explosion proof mobile phone has to cover gas and polymer dust in a single building. This page is for SCGC operations, maintenance and HSE teams and the contractors on their shutdowns. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; it is pre-launch and certification is in progress. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification programme in progress
Trade press describes SCG as owning two crackers at Map Ta Phut: the Rayong Olefins Company (ROC) cracker, reported at about 800,000 tonnes a year of ethylene and 400,000 of propylene, and the Map Ta Phut Olefins Company (MOC) cracker, reported at about 1 million tonnes of ethylene and 500,000 of propylene. Their output feeds polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC plants, including Siam Polyethylene, Thai Polyethylene, Thai Polypropylene, Thai Plastics and Chemicals and HMC Polymers, with ROC's own HDPE and PP lines reported at 920,000 and 720,000 tonnes a year. These are press figures, not SCGC statements. The point for a handset is the route: furnace and quench gas at one end, reactor loops and extruders in the middle, and powder silos and bagging at the other, all inside the IEAT estate.
A cracker alone is hard on equipment; a polymer plant adds dust. Both are on this page.

Ethylene and hydrogen run through the cold section, so the marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. A device with a lower gas group would be refused entry to part of the plant.
Polymer powder works into connectors and charging ports. IP68 sealing and rugged build answer dust and washdown, but the Ex marking is what decides entry.
Rayong is humid all year with the southwest monsoon from May. Open pipe racks and furnace structures give no shelter during rain.
A cracker runs for years between turnarounds, and the contractor population spikes during them.
Planned stops for the crackers and individual polymer lines bring contractor crews into classified areas on a pass with a fixed window. The unit must be enrolled before the gate and cleared at the end of the job.
Permanent operators and temporary crews are in the same area, so the console profile should differ between them: permit app and camera for one, a narrower set for the other.
We have not verified an SCGC approval programme for portable devices, so we do not describe one. Ask SCGC procurement and HSE for the approval steps and documents expected alongside the Ex certificate.
TISI, the Department of Industrial Works, IEAT and NBTC each apply on top of the IECEx evidence. All are in progress, and SCGC would still review the device itself.
An operator logs readings on the furnace deck, photographs a hot spot and attaches the position, all without leaving the Zone 1 boundary.
An inspector checks dust extraction and bag filters, photographs housekeeping and records the finding in a Zone 21 area on the same handset used on the reactor floor.
A planner pushes the job pack and permit to a contractor handset and removes it when the job is signed off.
No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch, and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are in progress. The datasheet and certification schedule are available now.

Trade press reported that a pyrolysis gasoline tank fire at Map Ta Phut in May 2024 led SCG to declare force majeure on cracker output. Events like that keep tank and transfer areas under close review and are why site teams ask hard questions about anything carried into them.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Thailand. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
