Ruwais sits about 240 km west of Abu Dhabi city, on the coast near the Jebel Dhanna crude terminal, and it is a purpose built industrial city rather than a single plant. A refinery complex, polyolefin production, fertiliser plant, gas and NGL processing, a chemicals zone under construction and the export berths share one perimeter, one road network and one permit culture. Crews cross between them, contractors mobilise into them for turnarounds, and the accommodation city sits alongside. That is why equipment selection here is a site wide question rather than a plant by plant one.
Two things dominate here: a site big enough that walking it is a shift in itself, and a hazard picture that changes from gas to dust and from group IIA to group IIC within a few hundred metres. The IS-04Z1 is designed against both, and against the coastal climate that wears equipment out faster than the inland fields do.
A device rated only for the propane group would be fine at the crude units and wrong at the hydrogen plants. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which is the group and temperature class an instrumentation engineer at Ruwais will check first.
A technician can leave a Zone 1 hydrocarbon area and enter a Zone 21 polymer or urea dust area on the same permit. The design covers Zone 1 and Zone 21 together, so one specification and one issued device follow the person rather than the plant.
Ruwais runs above 45 °C in summer with Gulf humidity and salt behind it. A rugged build is aimed at heat, humidity and salt, and IP68 sealing is what survives the washdowns a refinery and a jetty both apply.
