ATEX phone for the Mina Abdullah refinery, Zone 1

Mina Abdullah is a KNPC refinery on the coast south of Mina Al-Ahmadi, rebuilt by the Clean Fuels Project into half of an integrated two-refinery complex. This page is for the process, maintenance, inspection and telecoms people who need a working phone inside a unit that runs on hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide and hot residue.

What is classified at Mina Abdullah

The Clean Fuels Project changed what this site is. Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi were upgraded and tied together into a single complex of roughly 800,000 barrels a day, with Mina Abdullah taking the larger share at about 454,000, and residue that used to leave as fuel oil now goes through atmospheric residue desulphurisation, a coker and hydrocracking instead. That is a deeper, hotter, higher pressure refinery than the one that stood here before, and it is almost entirely classified once you are past the administration block. Products leave offshore rather than over a quay: a sea island carrying berths 18 and 19 loads naphtha, jet, diesel, kerosene and bunkers into tankers up to very large sizes, which puts a second body of classified work out on the water and on the trestle that reaches it.

What a coastal Kuwaiti refinery does to a handset

Mina Abdullah adds humidity and salt to the heat and dust that the inland sites have. These are the points that decide whether a device is still in service at the end of its first summer here.

OSAndroid 16

Salt air on top of Gulf heat

A coastal refinery gives you high humidity, airborne salt and long spells above 45 °C at once, which is a harder combination for a sealed enclosure than dry desert heat. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the relevant specifications, and the ATEX marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is what your area classification is checked against.

Hydrogen service changes the gas group

ARDS, hydrocracking and the hydrogen plants put group IIC gas on this site rather than the IIA and IIB you might assume from crude alone. The device is designed for IIC, which is the group your instrumentation engineer will ask about first.

Gas and dust in the same complex

The coker adds coke cutting, handling and conveying to a refinery that is otherwise a gas classification problem. Being designed for Zone 21 as well as Zone 1 means one specification covers the whole plant instead of two device types on two permits.

Turnarounds multiply the people, not the radios

A shutdown at a refinery this size brings in a contractor population several times the running headcount, each crew needing a permit, a drawing and a way to reach the control room. An enrolled handset carrying all three cuts what is signed out each morning and handed back each night.

Work that happens offshore of the fence

The sea island is classified, exposed and reached over water, so a device that goes there needs its ingress rating to be real rather than nominal. Four-constellation GNSS and NFC also matter for loading and inspection records made where there is no fixed workstation.

Use cases · Mina Abdullah

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Operator rounds through the conversion units

A shift walking the ARDS and coker units logs readings, photographs a leak and calls the panel from inside a classified area. One intrinsically safe handset with the round application, the camera and the phone on it removes the walk back to the safe area that each of those tasks currently forces.

Turnaround02

Permit traffic during a shutdown

During a Clean Fuels era turnaround the permit office is the bottleneck. A device carrying the permit application, the isolation list and the site directory keeps a crew moving and gives the issuing authority a timestamped record of who was told what.

Marine03

Loading operations at the sea island

A loading master on berth 18 or 19 works with the ship, the tank farm and the jetty at once, in salt air and full sun. NFC tag reads at the arm, photographs of the connection and a call to the control room all run from a handset designed to be carried in that classification.

Questions · Mina Abdullah

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Mina Abdullah?

Not yet. The device is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch, and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are all in progress. Nothing goes into a KNPC classified area before the certificate covering it is issued. Today you can have the datasheet, the certification schedule and an evaluation unit for safe-area handling and enrolment trials.

How much does an intrinsically safe phone cost in Kuwait?

We do not publish a price. Until certification completes there is no list price and no quoted delivery, and a firm figure from anyone for an uncertified Ex device is not something they can stand behind. Pre-launch pricing is given in writing against quantity and configuration.

Which zone and gas group does the refinery need?

Most of a hydroprocessing refinery is Zone 1 or Zone 2 gas, and the hydrogen service makes group IIC the governing case. Coke handling brings Zone 21 dust into the same complex. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 with an ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Can it be used out on the sea island?

That is exactly the sort of location the design is aimed at, subject to the certificate and to KNPC marine approval. IP68 sealing, rugged build and a full-shift 4,000 mAh battery are specified for work away from any charging point.

Who approves it for use inside the refinery?

KNPC does, through its own engineering and telecoms review, after the national conformity route is satisfied. The certificates are the input to that review, not a substitute for it. The KUCAS and CITRA route into Kuwait is set out on the Kuwait page.

Can our IT team manage it like our other phones?

Yes. It runs Android 16 with EMM and MDM enrolment, so the corporate profile, the application list and the camera policy are pushed from the console you already use. That is usually what makes a camera-equipped device acceptable on a site where photography runs on a permit.
