Explosion proof mobile phone for Musaffah, Zone 1 and Zone 21

Musaffah is where Abu Dhabi builds and repairs the things that go offshore, and where a large part of the emirate’s heavy manufacturing sits. This page is for the yard managers, QA and QC engineers, marine superintendents and HSE advisers who control what a worker may carry into a blast hall, a purged vessel or a bunkering operation. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

What is actually at Musaffah

Musaffah is the industrial belt south of Abu Dhabi island: a dredged channel lined with fabrication yards, shipbuilding and marine services, backed by the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi zones and thousands of workshops. It is not a classified process plant in the way Ruwais is. The hazards here are made rather than piped: solvent vapour in paint halls, shielding and fuel gases at every welding bay, hydrocarbon residue inside modules being cut open, fuel and bunker transfer on the water, and metal and mineral dust in the blasting shops. The equipment question is the same as at a refinery, but the answer has to survive rougher handling and shorter contracts.

What a Musaffah yard does to a handset

A yard destroys phones in ways a process plant does not. Devices are dropped from scaffolds onto steel, blasted with grit, painted, washed, left in the sun on a deck and handed between people who did not buy them. Add coastal humidity and salt off the channel, and the specification has to be about survival and control as much as about the certificate.

Dust that is abrasive as well as combustible

Grit blasting and grinding put fine metal and mineral dust everywhere, and it works into every seam. IP68 sealing and a Zone 21 dust design are what keep a unit serviceable through a blasting campaign rather than through the first week of one.

Coastal humidity plus radiant heat from the steel

Musaffah runs above 45 °C in summer, and a steel deck in the sun is hotter again. A rugged build is aimed at heat, humidity and salt, which is the trio the channel supplies all year.

Fleets that are lent, not owned

Yard work runs on short contracts and mixed employers. Android 16 with enterprise management enrols a loaned fleet under one policy, restricts what it can do, and wipes and recovers a unit at demobilisation, which is where lent equipment normally disappears.

Evidence for a fabrication dossier

Weld visuals, coating thickness records and punch list items all end up as photographs attached to a report. A 50 MP camera with phase detect autofocus produces images a client inspector will accept, taken by the person who found the defect.

One permitted item instead of three

A camera in an Abu Dhabi yard normally needs its own permit, and a torch and a radio are separate signed out items again. Collapsing them into a single intrinsically safe handset shortens the gate process and reduces what has to be returned at the end of a job.

Use cases · Musaffah

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Offshore fabrication01

Jacket, deck and module build in the yards

A structure being built for an offshore field is inspected continuously by the yard, the client and a third party. An enrolled handset lets the inspector photograph a weld or a coating failure, tag it to a position and send it before the scaffold comes down, instead of writing a reference number and returning with a permitted camera later.

Marine services02

Bunkering and repair alongside the channel

Refuelling, tank cleaning and hot work on a vessel put a classified area at the waterline with a crew working around it. A device that takes a washdown, holds a call from the quay and photographs a leaking connection is more useful to a marine superintendent than a radio that only talks.

Shutdown crews03

Mobilising from Musaffah to Ruwais and offshore

Crews are assembled at Musaffah, issued equipment, and sent to a turnaround at Ruwais or out to an offshore asset for a fixed scope. A device that is centrally enrolled before it leaves the yard arrives already carrying the right profile, and is accounted for when the crew comes back.

Questions · Musaffah

Frequently asked questions

Can we order units for our Musaffah yard now?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch date, and the IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification work is still in progress. We will not put a unit into a classified area before the certificate covering that use has been issued. Documentation and evaluation units are what exist today.

How much does an explosion proof phone cost in the UAE?

There is no published price while certification is running. Tell us the quantity, how many yards or crews it has to cover and when you need it, and we will give you pre-launch pricing in writing against that configuration. For volume into operator contracts, the practical route is a registered UAE partner, and ICV standing affects how a bid is scored.

Our yard is not a refinery. Do we really need a certified phone?

That is a question for your area classification drawings rather than for us. Paint and blast halls, gas stores, bunkering points, charging rooms and purged vessels are commonly classified in UAE yards even when the rest of the site is not. If those areas are classified, the equipment carried into them has to match.

Which zones and gas groups is it designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21, gas and dust, with an ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 also being pursued. The last of those matters on Musaffah scopes written by contractors working to the American code.

Can we manage a fleet across several yards and subcontractors?

It runs Android 16 with standard enterprise management, so it enrols into the EMM or MDM platform you already operate. Camera restriction, application whitelisting, remote lock and wipe are all policy settings, which is what makes a lent fleet across subcontractors auditable.

What happens when one is damaged on site?

An Ex certified device cannot be opened in a workshop without invalidating its certification, so battery replacement and repair run through SAMS and the UAE partner it is appointing rather than through a yard electrician. Spares pooling within reach of Abu Dhabi is part of what we are appointing distributors to provide.
