Mesaieed Industrial Area lies about 40 km south of Doha and was Qatar’s only deepwater port for decades before Ras Laffan and Hamad were built. It is the older and more varied of the two industrial cities: a refinery and product terminal, ethylene and polyethylene production, fertiliser on a very large scale, a chlor alkali and vinyls complex, methanol and fuel additives, a direct reduction steel plant and an aluminium smelter, all served by the same port and the same permit system. Feedstock arrives by pipeline from Ras Laffan and Dukhan. Unlike an LNG city, the hazard here is genuinely mixed, and that is the whole difficulty of specifying equipment for it.
Mesaieed is the site that punishes a narrow specification. A device chosen for a gas plant will be wrong in a urea bagging hall, and one chosen for a smelter will be wrong at a VCM unit. Add coastal humidity, salt and the shamal, and the sensible approach is a single device rated for the worst case on the site rather than a different handset per plant.
Urea granulation, polymer silos, alumina and coke handling put combustible dust next to flammable vapour on the same site. The design covers Zone 1 and Zone 21 together, so one specification and one issued device follow the technician between the two.
A direct reduction steel plant runs on hydrogen rich gas, which is gas group IIC rather than the IIA of most hydrocarbon service. The ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is set at that worst case, which is what makes one fleet workable across Mesaieed.
Furnace decks, potrooms and a casthouse add radiant heat to a coastal summer already past 45 °C. The temperature class on the certificate is what your technical safety engineer will check, and the rugged build covers the handling side of it.
The site is on the coast, takes shamal dust in spring and washes plant down constantly. IP68 sealing is the practical requirement, and it is worth more here than any single feature on the datasheet.
Mesaieed is a dozen employers sharing a fence, a road network and a contractor pool. Android 16 with enterprise management lets each operator enrol, restrict and wipe its own fleet, including camera policy, without the site having to trust the device by default.
Polymer and urea handling is where dust classification actually bites, and it is also where a handset gets buried in product and washed down afterwards. Because the device is designed for Zone 21 as well as Zone 1, one specification covers a reactor deck, a silo gallery and a bagging line without three separate equipment cases.
Direct reduction and smelting bring hydrogen rich gas, coke and alumina dust, and radiant heat into the same operating envelope. A device specified against the strictest gas group and dust zone on the site is the only way one fleet serves both a polymer plant and a potroom without an exception being written for each.
Methanol, condensate, refined product and bulk cargo all leave from the same port area. A handset that survives a manifold, holds a call from the jetty and photographs a failed gasket while the hose is still connected is more useful to a loading master than a radio and a request for a camera permit.
No. It is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch date, and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are all in progress, as is Qatari product conformity and CRA type approval for the radio. Documentation and evaluation places are what exist today, and we would rather say that plainly.

The device is designed for Zone 21 dust as well as Zone 1 gas, and IP68 sealing is what keeps it serviceable in product handling areas. Dust certification, like gas certification, is part of the programme in progress rather than something already granted.
Android 16 runs the interface in Arabic or English on the same handset, and enrols into the EMM or MDM platform you already operate. Camera restriction, application control and remote wipe are policy settings, which is what makes a device acceptable at a Qatari industrial gate.
