Ras Laffan sits on Qatar’s north east coast, roughly 80 km from Doha, and it is a planned industrial city with a single controlled perimeter rather than a collection of separate plants. Inside it are the liquefaction trains that process North Field gas, two gas to liquids plants, a condensate refinery, helium extraction, sulphur handling, gas processing for the export pipeline to the UAE, and an artificial harbour built for LNG and liquids export. The North Field expansion is adding more trains, which means a construction population working alongside a live plant for years. Everything on this list is classified, and most of the workforce crosses several of them.
Ras Laffan combines two temperature problems in one walk. Outside, the Gulf summer runs past 45 °C with coastal humidity. Inside the plant, the process is cryogenic, the gloves are heavy and a spill is a cold burn hazard rather than a fire one. On top of that the site is large enough that a round is measured in kilometres, and the camera rules are strict.
Liquefaction is largely gas group IIA, but the GTL and hydrogen sections are not. The ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 covers the strictest group on the site, which is what allows one specification to travel from a train to a GTL unit without a second device.
Insulated gloves are worn near cold service, and a device that cannot be worked in them is left in a pocket, which defeats the point. Glove handling is one of the specific things we ask evaluation crews to test, because we would rather find that out on your jetty than after a fleet decision.
The same shift that works cold service walks between units in Gulf summer heat with salt in the air. A rugged build is aimed at heat, humidity and salt, and IP68 covers the washdown, which is the combination Ras Laffan applies year round.
Trains, tankage, GTL and the berths sit kilometres apart inside one perimeter, and there is nowhere to charge in between. A 4,000 mAh battery sized for a full shift is the difference between a device that finishes the round and one that finishes half of it.
A camera inside a Qatari energy site is controlled. Android 16 with enterprise management lets a telecoms team disable or restrict the camera by policy and prove it, which is normally the condition on which a camera equipped handset is admitted at all.
A field operator walking a train checks compressors, cold box connections and relief points, and anything unusual has to reach the control room while the operator is still standing at it. One enrolled handset carries the call, the reading and the photograph, instead of a radio for the call and a request for a permitted camera afterwards.
Loading is a timed operation with a vessel alongside, and the jetty head is a long way from anywhere. A device that takes a washdown, holds a call from the berth and photographs a leaking arm connection is doing three jobs that the berth currently splits across three items.
The North Field expansion puts a large contractor population inside a running industrial city for years. Central enrolment, camera policy and remote wipe are what make a lent fleet acceptable to the operator and auditable to the contractor when a scope closes out.
No. It is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch date, and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are all still in progress, as is Qatari product conformity and CRA type approval for the radio. We will not put a unit into a classified area before the certificate covering that use exists.
Nothing is published while certification is running, because a price quoted against an unfinished certificate is not one you can rely on. That approval is theirs to give and it follows the certificates. The IECEx Certificate of Conformity with the complete marking string is the document their engineering review works from, and supplier registration with a Tawteen In-Country Value scorecard is the commercial half of the same decision.
A certificate defines permitted areas by zone, gas group and temperature class, not by which substance is present, so the answer is set by the certificate once issued. The design target is Zone 1 and Zone 21 with gas group IIC and T4. For sour service the practical benefit is Bluetooth pairing with a personal gas detector.
Yes. Camera restriction is an enterprise management policy under Android 16, applied and audited by your own telecoms team. That is usually what makes a camera equipped device admissible at a Ras Laffan gate at all, and the same enrolment covers remote lock and wipe.
An Ex certified device cannot be opened by a general workshop without invalidating the certification, so battery replacement and repair run through SAMS and the Qatari partner it is appointing, with spares pooled within reach of Ras Laffan and Doha. Turnaround expectations are part of what we are appointing distributors to commit to.
