Explosion proof mobile phone for Ahmadi and Greater Burgan

Ahmadi is where the Kuwaiti oil industry is run from: the Kuwait Oil Company headquarters, the township built around it, and the gathering centres that take Greater Burgan crude out of the ground. This page is for the HSE officers, gathering centre operators and telecoms teams who have to decide what a person is allowed to carry past the gate. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

What is classified in and around Ahmadi

Ahmadi sits on the Dhahar Al-Adan ridge above the northern edge of Greater Burgan, which is why it is there at all: the elevation let crude move towards the coast with gravity doing part of the work. Greater Burgan is one of the largest oilfields anywhere and covers three producing areas, Burgan, Magwa and Ahmadi. The town itself is offices, stores, schools and the company hospital, so it is not classified. Everything the town exists to run is. Crude arrives from wellheads at gathering centres that separate, stabilise and dehydrate it; the gas that comes off goes to booster stations and on to the LPG plant at Mina Al-Ahmadi, a few kilometres north. That means most of the walking a shift does in this area is inside a classified boundary, in the open, with the nearest safe-area charging point a drive rather than a walk away.

What Ahmadi does to a handset

The area classification decides whether a device may be carried at all. After that, Ahmadi decides how long it lasts. These are the five conditions that come up in every conversation about this site.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Open desert heat with no shade on the round

Kuwait records some of the hottest shade temperatures measured anywhere, and a gathering centre offers almost no shelter from it. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class on the certificate is the figure your instrumentation engineer checks against the maximum surface temperature the area classification permits.

Northerly dust that arrives inside an hour

A shamal coats the whole Ahmadi belt in fine sand with very little warning, and it gets into every seam and port. IP68 sealing and rugged build are what decide whether a handset still works when the wind drops.

Rounds measured in kilometres, not metres

A gathering centre route runs between wellheads, manifolds and the plant itself, and there is nowhere to charge inside the classified boundary. The 4,000 mAh cell is specified to cover a shift rather than most of one.

Positions with nothing to describe them by

Reporting a weeping gland or a hot bearing on a Burgan flowline is difficult when the horizon has no landmark in it. Four-constellation GNSS puts a coordinate on the record instead of a description, and the 50 MP camera with PDAF puts a legible photograph next to it.

A camera on a site where photography runs on permit

KOC facilities control photography, so the answer is not a device without a camera but a camera your own console can switch off. Android 16 with EMM and MDM enrolment lets you push that policy centrally and manage these units alongside the rest of the estate.

Use cases · Ahmadi

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Upstream01

Gathering centre rounds

An operator walking a route through separation and stabilisation trains has to record readings, photograph a defect and reach the control room, all inside the classified boundary. One intrinsically safe handset replaces the radio, the camera and the paper round sheet a shift currently signs out.

Maintenance02

Flowline and wellhead call-outs

A fault on a Burgan flowline sends a crew out to a location that is easier to reach with a coordinate than with directions. Navigation, photographs and a call back to the maintenance planner run from the same device, without a safe-area stop to use any of them.

Contractors03

Drilling and workover campaigns

A rig moving through the field takes its classified area with it, and the crew is often a contractor working to a permit issued that morning. An enrolled handset carries the permit, the site directory and the daily report and can be locked down to the applications the operator has approved.

Questions · Ahmadi

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof mobile phone for use in Ahmadi today?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, with a Q4 2026 launch, and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are all still in progress. What exists today is the datasheet, a written certification schedule and a place in the evaluation programme. We will not supply a unit into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Kuwait?

There is no list price yet, and any supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex device is telling you something they cannot support. Pre-launch pricing is quoted in writing against a stated quantity and configuration, once we know the zone, the gas group and the volume involved.

Which zones is it designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21, gas and dust, which is what a gathering centre, a booster station and a produced water plant between them require. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 and NEC 500 Class I Division 1 is being pursued alongside for scopes written to the American code.

Is a flameproof phone the same as an intrinsically safe phone?

They are two different protection concepts, even though the search terms are used as if they were one. Flameproof, written Ex d, contains an explosion inside a heavy enclosure. Intrinsic safety, written Ex ib, limits the energy in the circuit so that ignition cannot happen, and that is the concept a Zone 1 handset uses.

Will KOC accept it inside the Ahmadi area?

That decision belongs to KOC and follows the certificates rather than preceding them. The IECEx certificate is the evidence their engineering and telecoms review is built on, and the vendor file is being prepared with a Kuwaiti partner. The regulatory route into the country is covered on the Kuwait page.

How do repairs work if a unit is damaged in the field?

A device holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened on site or repaired by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. The service route runs through SAMS and the Kuwaiti partner it is appointing, with spares held close to Ahmadi rather than shipped in for each fault.
