Explosion proof mobile phone for Yanbu Industrial City

Yanbu is the Kingdom’s Red Sea industrial city, the western end of the crude pipeline that crosses the country from the Eastern Province and the base for a large refining and petrochemical cluster. This page is for the operators, inspectors, HSE officers and telecoms teams who have to equip people working inside its classified units. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

What is classified at Yanbu

Yanbu exists because of a pipeline. The East-West Crude Oil Pipeline, universally called the Petroline, runs roughly 1,200 kilometres from Abqaiq in the Eastern Province to the Red Sea coast here, giving Saudi crude a route to Europe and beyond that does not pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Around that terminus the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu built the second of its two industrial cities. The anchor is YASREF, the full-conversion refinery run as a joint venture between Aramco and Sinopec, processing Arabian Heavy crude on a site of several square kilometres; alongside it sit an older Aramco refinery, NGL fractionation, base oil production and the SABIC petrochemical affiliates. King Fahd Industrial Port handles crude, bulk and general cargo across separate terminals. Almost all of that work is classified and almost all of it is outdoors.

What Yanbu does to a handset

Yanbu is a Red Sea site, not a Gulf one, and it is a long way from the Eastern Province supply chain most Saudi industrial buyers use. Both of those shape the specification.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Red Sea humidity and salt, all year

The coast here is humid and salt-laden for most of the year, and summer temperatures sit far above what a consumer handset is designed for. IP68 sealing and rugged build are what keep a device serviceable, and the temperature class on the certificate is what keeps it lawful. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Heavy crude conversion means hydrogen and sour service

A full-conversion refinery running Arabian Heavy is a hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide site as much as a hydrocarbon one, which puts gas group IIC in the governing case. A crew here normally carries a personal gas detector, and Bluetooth lets the detector and the handset work together rather than compete for a hand.

Dust alongside gas in the same city

Coke handling at the refineries and powder and pellet handling at the polymer plants create Zone 21 areas next to Zone 1 ones. The IS-04Z1 is designed for both, so a single equipment decision covers a complex rather than half of it.

Distance from the Eastern Province

Yanbu is about as far from Dhahran as you can get and still be in the Kingdom, so a device that fails is not replaced the same day. Full-shift endurance from the 4,000 mAh cell and a sealed, tested body matter more here than at a site with stores over the road.

Arabic and English on one build

Yanbu plants run with Saudi staff and expatriate contractor crews side by side. Android 16 carries both interface languages on the same image, and enterprise enrolment pushes the same camera and application policy to every unit regardless of who is holding it.

Use cases · Yanbu

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Conversion unit rounds

An operator on a coker or hydrocracker round logs readings, photographs a defect and calls the panel from inside the classified boundary. One intrinsically safe handset replaces the radio, the camera and the paper sheet, and the 50 MP camera with PDAF produces a photograph an engineer can actually read.

Pipeline and terminal02

Work at the Petroline terminus

Metering, pumping and surge equipment at the seaward end of the line is checked and maintained by crews working outdoors, often at a distance from any office. Position, photographs and a call back to the control room all come from the same device, on a battery sized for the shift.

Petrochemical03

Polymer plant and bagging areas

Powder and pellet handling is dust classification, not gas, and it usually sits a short walk from units that are firmly Zone 1. A handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 lets a technician cross that line without swapping equipment at a doorway.

Questions · Yanbu

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 available for Yanbu sites yet?

No. It is pre-launch, with a Q4 2026 launch, and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are all in progress. We do not supply units into classified areas ahead of the certificate. The datasheet, the certification schedule and an evaluation unit for safe-area trials are available now.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Saudi Arabia?

We do not publish one. There is no list price and no quoted delivery while certification is running. Pre-launch pricing is quoted in writing against quantity and configuration, and volume supply into the Kingdom is planned through a partner holding the relevant vendor registrations.

Which zones and gas groups is it designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21, gas and dust, with an ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. NEC 500 Class I Division 1 is being pursued in parallel, which matters on Yanbu projects written by contractors working to the American code.

Will it cope with a Red Sea summer?

It is designed to, with IP68 sealing and rugged build behind it. The figure to evaluate is not the marketing claim but the temperature class on the certificate, checked against the maximum surface temperature your area classification allows.

Who approves it for use inside a Yanbu plant?

The operator does. YASREF, Aramco and the SABIC affiliates each run their own engineering and telecoms review, and the certificates are the evidence that review works from. The SASO and SABER conformity route into the Kingdom is set out on the Saudi Arabia page.

How would service and spares work this far from Dhahran?

An Ex-certified device cannot be opened on site or repaired by a general phone workshop without invalidating its certification, so the service route runs through SAMS and the Saudi partner it is appointing. Spares holding for the Red Sea coast is part of what we are discussing with partners now.
