High-altitude operation at the mines
Toquepala and Cuajone are in the high southern Andes, where cold nights and thin air cut battery life. The 4,000 mAh cell is specified for a shift and should be validated against site winters.
Southern Copper Corporation, a subsidiary of Grupo México and listed in New York, runs the Toquepala and Cuajone mines in southern Peru and the Ilo smelter and refinery on the coast. This page is for its HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams looking at an explosion proof mobile phone for Peru, and for the contractors who work across Toquepala, Cuajone, Ilo and the Tía María project. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification and vendor documentation in progress
Southern Copper is a chain of sites rather than a single mine. Toquepala is in Tacna and Cuajone in Moquegua; both are long-established open-pit copper operations in the high southern Andes. The Ilo complex on the coast takes concentrate through a smelter and a refinery, and the company has described expansion plans there. Tía María, in Arequipa, is under construction, and Southern Copper reported it 23 per cent complete in October 2025 with a goal of production by 2027 and about 120,000 tonnes of copper cathode a year. That spread gives three different hazard profiles. The mines and concentrators have combustible dust and reagent areas at altitude; the smelter has fuel, oxygen and process-gas systems at sea level; and a new plant under construction has contractors, commissioning and a classification study still being turned into drawings.
A company with sites from the high Andes to the coast needs a handset that can survive the whole range. Altitude, cold and dust at the mines give way to salt air and heat at Ilo. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.

The smelter and refinery are on the coast, in salt air and heat. IP68 sealing is relevant to both environments, so one model can be proposed for mine and port.
Tía María brings construction contractors, commissioning teams and temporary classified areas. A single managed handset for classified work helps keep contractor devices on one register.
Grupo México has operations beyond Peru, and the company may prefer devices it can manage consistently. Android Enterprise and the usual MDM consoles support that, with policies set by Southern Copper's own IT team.
As a NYSE-listed company, Southern Copper operates under disclosure and governance rules that favour complete records. A clear certificate trail makes any equipment decision easier to defend.
Operators at Toquepala and Cuajone log readings, photograph defects and call maintenance. A handset suited to classified dust areas replaces separate radios and cameras.
Technicians checking burner fuel lines and process systems need to log findings without leaving the area. A certified handset would allow that inside the relevant zones, once certification exists.
As new plant is energised, commissioning teams, contractors and operations staff share the site. Enrolled handsets carrying permits and punch lists help keep the handover orderly.
No. Concentrators are mainly combustible-dust areas, while smelters add fuel, oxygen and process-gas systems. The operator's classification study decides what is required in each building.
Construction is in progress, with a 2027 production target reported by the company. Any handset decision would follow the operator's own timetable and the availability of certificates, which are still in progress.
Not automatically. Each site's HSE and engineering teams review equipment, although documentation prepared for one can speed the next. Ask the company how it handles multi-site approvals.
Parent practice can inform expectations, but Peruvian regulation and the Peruvian company's own review govern. A supplier should expect to deal with the Peruvian teams directly.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Peru. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
