A single site, one device standard
With one operating asset in Peru, Hudbay can choose one handset and issue it to a whole workforce. That makes support, spares and training simpler than at a multi-site operator where several models accumulate.
Constancia is Hudbay Minerals' copper-molybdenum mine in Chumbivilcas province, Cusco, at 4,000 to 4,500 metres above sea level, about 600 km south-east of Lima. This page is for the HSE, maintenance and telecoms teams at Hudbay Peru who are weighing up an explosion proof mobile phone for Peru's high-Andean copper operations, and for contractors who work there. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification and vendor documentation in progress
Hudbay owns 100 per cent of Constancia, which covers the Constancia pit and the Pampacancha satellite deposit. Construction was completed in 2014 and commercial operation began in April 2015. Ore is crushed, ground and floated at the site into a copper concentrate with molybdenum recovered in a separate circuit, and concentrate is then trucked via Yauri to the port of Matarani, about 460 km by road. For a handset, the useful way to look at Constancia is as a compact single-site operation. Hazardous areas are in the mill, the moly circuit, the reagent stores and the fuel facilities; the long haul road is a communications problem rather than a classification one. Staff live in camp, shifts run in blocks and contractors rotate through, so the people who need a device are a mix of permanent operators and visiting crews.
Altitude is the first thing a visitor feels and the first thing that goes wrong with a poorly chosen device. At more than 4,000 metres, cold nights, strong ultraviolet and thin air all show up in a handset sooner than at lower sites. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty and is specified for harsh mining conditions; certification is in progress and these points are design intentions, not certified claims.

Battery capacity falls in the cold, and night rounds at this altitude are cold. The 4,000 mAh cell is specified to cover a shift, and operators will want to test it against their own winter nights before roll-out.
The concentrator and conveyors produce persistent fine dust. IP68 sealing keeps it out, and the Zone 21 design target is aimed at the areas where a dust layer or cloud is a credible ignition scenario.
As a company listed in Toronto and New York, Hudbay produces detailed safety reporting. Complete certificates, schedules of limits and a clear record of device models make it easier to show what was approved and when.
Shifts change in blocks and visiting contractors come and go. Android Enterprise enrolment lets the IT team issue, restrict and wipe devices at the start and end of each rotation, rather than relying on handover by hand.
Operators in the mill record pump pressures and reagent levels, photograph anything unusual and report to the control room. A rugged handset for classified areas would replace the radio and the clipboard for that round.
Mobile-plant technicians working in the pit and at the fuelling bays need to log faults, check work orders and report positions. GNSS and a durable camera suit work spread across two pits and a long haul road.
Supervisors coordinating concentrate trucks to Matarani need to confirm loads, report delays and reach drivers. A single enrolled handset for load-out staff keeps that communication on a managed device.
It can, because a smaller company has fewer layers between the user, the HSE team and the buyer. It does not shorten the technical requirements, and no supplier should assume it will be waved through. Ask the operator what evidence it wants.
No. The road is a coordination and breakdown risk rather than a classified area. A rugged handset with GNSS and robust coverage handling is useful there, but the Zone 1 and Zone 21 design target is for the plant.
It is designed for harsh environments with IP68 sealing and a battery sized for a shift. Altitude, cold and UV are the conditions to test in an on-site trial, and site-specific confirmation is always advisable.
No. It is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued. Certification is in progress for a Q4 2026 launch, and any evaluation before then is based on documents and data, not use in classified areas.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Peru. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
