Explosion proof mobile phone for Cerro Verde, Arequipa

Cerro Verde is a large open-pit copper mine at Uchumayo, about 20 miles south-west of Arequipa, operated by Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde and controlled by Freeport-McMoRan with Sumitomo Metal Mining and Buenaventura as shareholders. This page covers where an explosion proof mobile phone is relevant at the Cerro Verde concentrator and leach operations in Peru, and what its HSE and procurement teams will ask of a handset supplier. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed at Cerro Verde

Cerro Verde is an unusually large operation by Peruvian standards. Shareholder filings describe a processing capacity above half a million tonnes of ore a day, of which more than 400,000 tonnes go through the concentrator and the rest through leaching and solvent-extraction circuits. That gives the site two distinct families of hazardous area. The concentrator has dry-ore and concentrate handling where combustible dust can build up, plus reagent stores for flotation. The leach and electrowinning side has solvent extraction, where the organic phase is a flammable liquid and the plant layout is built around keeping vapour away from ignition sources. Add fuel for a large haul fleet and the molybdenum-bearing streams that come from a porphyry orebody, and the result is a site where a person can cross several classified boundaries in a single round, without leaving the grounds or going anywhere near a remote camp.

Ownership and operating context

Freeport-McMoRan
Holds 53.56 per cent of Cerro Verde through Freeport Minerals Corporation and is its operator.
Sumitomo Metal Mining
21.00 per cent through SMM Cerro Verde Netherlands.
Compañía de Minas Buenaventura
19.58 per cent, with a further 5.86 per cent held by other shareholders.
Location
Uchumayo district, about 20 miles south-west of Arequipa, so staff and contractors commute from the city.
Water supply
Treated municipal wastewater from Arequipa is reused in processing, as described on the company's own pages.
Contractors
Large maintenance and expansion workforces from Arequipa-based and national firms.

Areas where classification questions arise

Concentrator grinding and flotation
Mill buildings, lime handling and reagent stores in a plant designed for very high throughput.
Concentrate thickening and filtering
Dewatered concentrate, with dust behaviour set by the operator's own testing.
Solvent extraction and electrowinning
Organic diluent in mixer-settlers and storage, a flammable-liquid hazard distinct from the dust areas.
Molybdenum circuit
Where moly concentrate is produced and handled; dryers and bagging need their own classification review.
Fuel and lubricant storage
Large fleet fuelling and tank farms around the pit and truck shop.
Power and substations
Mostly outside classification, but with fuel-fired standby plant and battery rooms that need review.

What Cerro Verde does to a handset

Cerro Verde is closer to a city than the other big copper mines in the country, which changes the problems. The altitude is far lower than the Apurímac and Cusco sites, so battery and cold are less of a concern. The problems here are scale, dust, and the number of different classified areas a technician crosses in one shift. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, and certification is in progress.

Dust and spray in an arid valley

The pit and the concentrator sit in a dry desert valley where wind lifts fine dust and the process adds mist and spray. IP68 sealing protects connectors and speakers in both conditions, so a quick wash between areas is practical.

A large site walked on foot

With a concentrator of this size, a round between the grinding lines and the thickeners is a long walk and charging inside the building is not an option. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift without a recharge.

Two hazard families in one pocket

A technician can start the shift in a dust area and finish at a solvent-extraction plant. A Zone 1 and Zone 21 design target avoids carrying two different devices, though the operator's classification study decides what is allowed where.

A parent company that standardises

Freeport-McMoRan operates mines across several continents and standardises where it can. Android Enterprise and existing MDM consoles let the Peruvian IT team apply the same policies it applies elsewhere, with the camera and location switched according to area.

Contractor turnover during shutdowns

A site of this size brings in hundreds of contractors for a mill shutdown. Enrolling, issuing and wiping handsets centrally keeps the register accurate when crews change every few weeks.

Use cases · Cerro Verde

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Cerro Verde

Concentrator01

Mill line inspections

Operators and maintenance technicians walk grinding and flotation lines recording vibration, temperature and leaks. A single enrolled handset carries the round checklist, takes the photograph and calls maintenance without leaving the classified area.

Leach and SX02

Solvent extraction plant rounds

Where flammable organic liquid is in circulation, the rule is no unapproved electronics. A certified device would let operators log levels, photograph leaks and report a spill without walking to a safe area first, once certification exists.

Shutdowns03

Contractor mobilisation during a shutdown

A mill outage brings a large contractor workforce on site. Pre-enrolled handsets carrying permits, isolation lists and contact numbers give the shutdown manager one communication channel across all trades.

Questions · Cerro Verde

Frequently asked questions

Does Freeport-McMoRan's approval of a device elsewhere apply at Cerro Verde?

No. Each operating company runs its own review and holds its own records. Documentation prepared to a standard the parent company recognises can make an evaluation easier, but the Peruvian site decides, against Peruvian regulation and its own area classification.

Is solvent extraction a Zone 1 area?

Classification depends on the plant design, the diluent used and the ventilation. That is for the operator's classification study to say. Where flammable liquid is handled, a device with an Ex certificate for the relevant gas group is generally what is required.

Cerro Verde is near Arequipa: does that change how a supplier supports it?

Yes. A city of that size gives easier access to logistics, couriers and engineers than the Apurímac or Cusco sites, which helps with spares, repairs and training. It does not change the certification requirement.

Can we trial a unit at Cerro Verde now?

No unit is certified yet; IECEx, ATEX and any local route are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. An evaluation can start with datasheets and documents, and hands-on use in classified areas follows the certificates.
