Explosion proof mobile phone for Shougang Hierro Peru

Shougang Hierro Peru runs the Marcona iron-ore complex in the Ica desert, an open-pit mine, a beneficiation plant and a private port at San Nicolás bay, all owned by China's Shougang Group. This page is about where an explosion proof mobile phone is relevant at Marcona in Peru, and what the company's HSE and procurement teams will ask of any supplier of handsets for classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed at Marcona

Marcona is not a copper mine, and the difference matters. Shougang Hierro Peru's complex is described in its own technical material as three main operating areas, Mina, San Nicolás and San Juan, with auxiliary facilities at Jahuay and an office in Lima. Open-pit mining feeds crushing and transfer systems, and the beneficiation plant near San Nicolás uses magnetic separation, grinding and flotation to remove copper, zinc, lead and other sulphides and bring the iron concentrate to specification. A concentrate expansion of around 10 million tonnes a year in the newer area was completed in 2018. Products are pellet feed, sinter feed, fines and lumps, mostly sold to Asia, and they leave through the San Nicolás terminal, a private port handling solid and liquid bulk. Magnetite handling creates dust, the flotation step brings reagents into the plant, and a port that moves liquid bulk brings flammable-liquid hazards with it.

Areas where classification questions arise

Crushing and conveyor transfers
Dry magnetite ore, with the dust properties set by the operator's own testing.
Grinding and magnetic separation
Wet and dry areas in the beneficiation plant.
Sulphide flotation
Reagent stores and dosing used to remove copper, zinc and lead sulphides.
Concentrate stockyards and load-out
Large stockpiles and conveyors feeding the port.
Port liquid-bulk handling
Fuel and other liquid cargo moved over the private terminal.

What Marcona does to a handset

The Ica coast is dry, windy and salty. Nothing about it resembles the high Andes, and the choice of handset follows the place. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and has IP68 sealing; certification is in progress and no certificate has yet been issued.

Salt air and wind-blown sand together

Pit, plant and port all sit within reach of the Pacific coast, so connectors and housings meet salt and abrasive sand at once. IP68 sealing is relevant to both, and cleaning between shifts is worth building into the roll-out.

An iron-ore dust profile, not a copper one

Magnetite ore and iron concentrate behave differently from copper-zinc concentrate. The Zone 21 design target addresses combustible dust generally, and the operator's own dust testing decides which areas are classified.

A port with liquid bulk

Where a terminal handles liquid cargo, flammable atmospheres can appear around transfer points and tanks. That is a Zone 1 and Zone 2 question for the port's own classification drawings.

A long-established operation with entrenched habits

Marcona has run for decades under several owners. Vendors meet established procedures and an incumbent supplier list, so documentation has to be complete and the case for change has to be clear.

Three areas, one managed estate

Pit, plant and port are separate places with different shift patterns. Android Enterprise enrolment lets one IT team manage handsets across all three from an existing MDM console.

Use cases · Shougang Hierro Peru

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Marcona

Plant01

Beneficiation plant rounds

Operators move through grinding, magnetic separators and flotation cells recording readings and photographing faults. A rugged handset for classified areas replaces separate radios, cameras and clipboards.

Port02

Ship loading and fuel transfer

Staff at the San Nicolás terminal coordinate vessels, conveyors and fuel transfers. A managed handset carrying permits and contact lists keeps communication within the controlled area.

Mine03

Pit and conveyor maintenance

Technicians along the crushing and conveying systems log faults and photograph worn components. GNSS records where the fault is across an extensive site.

Questions · Shougang Hierro Peru

Frequently asked questions

How do ore and concentrate move between the pit, the plant and the port?

Company descriptions we reviewed cover the mine, the beneficiation plant at San Nicolás and a private port. We have not confirmed the internal transport arrangements, so ask the operator how material moves between areas and which of those routes carry classified-area rules.

Does a port count as a hazardous area?

Parts of it can. Where fuel or other flammable liquids are transferred, stored or vented, the port's own classification study defines the zones. Dry bulk areas raise dust questions instead.

Is Marcona the same buyer as Chinalco's Toromocho mine?

No. Both have Chinese state-owned parents, but they are separate companies with different commodities, sites and procurement processes, so a conversation with one does not carry to the other.

What should we ask Shougang Hierro Peru before an evaluation?

Ask the HSE and procurement teams which area classification drawings, certificate types and vendor documents they require, and which areas are in scope. No SAMS certificate has been issued, so any evaluation starts with documents.
