Explosion proof mobile phone for mining in Peru

Peru is one of the world's major copper producers, and its mines run from the high Andes to the coastal desert. This page is the sector view of where an explosion proof mobile phone is relevant in Peruvian mining, with company pages for each major operator linked below, and a guide to what the operators' HSE and procurement teams are likely to ask of a supplier. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed in Peruvian mining

Hazardous areas at a mine are rarely the pit. They are the concentrator and its reagent stores, the molybdenum or sulphide-removal circuits, solvent-extraction plants, fuel storage, and in a smelter the fuel and process-gas systems. The mining safety regulation is Supreme Decree 024-2016-EM, amended by DS 023-2017-EM and DS 034-2023-EM, and it governs health and safety across exploration, extraction and processing, so it is the framework operators work within. The operators differ widely. Antamina is a four-shareholder copper-zinc mine with a 302 km pipeline; Cerro Verde is a very large concentrator-and-leach operation near Arequipa; Las Bambas and Constancia sit in the Apurímac and Cusco highlands; Toromocho is in the central Andes; Southern Copper runs Toquepala, Cuajone and the Ilo smelter; Mina Justa and Marcona share the Ica coast; and Yanacocha is a gold heap-leach operation in Cajamarca.

Operators by region

Southern copper belt
Toquepala, Cuajone, Cerro Verde, Las Bambas and Constancia, at altitudes from moderate to above 4,000 metres.
Central Andes
Toromocho in Junín, around 4,500 metres, with concentrate going to Callao by rail.
Ancash
Antamina, with a 302 km slurry pipeline to the port of Punta Lobitos.
Ica coast
Mina Justa and Marcona, sea-level desert operations with salt air.
Northern highlands
Yanacocha, a gold heap-leach operation near Cajamarca.
Coastal smelting
The Ilo smelter and refinery operated by Southern Copper.

Typical classified areas

Crushing and conveying
Combustible dust at transfer points and on structures.
Flotation reagent stores
Flammable and combustible reagents, depending on the plant.
Molybdenum circuits
Handling and drying of moly concentrate.
Solvent extraction
Organic diluent in flammable-liquid areas.
Fuel storage
Diesel for haul fleets and mobile plant.
Smelter fuel and process gas
Burner fuel, oxygen and process-gas systems.
Built for local conditions

What Peruvian mining does to a handset

No single mine is typical. Altitude, coast, cold, salt and dust change from one site to the next, and a handset has to work at all of them. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, with IP68 sealing; certification is in progress and no certificate has yet been issued.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Altitude above 4,000 metres

Several mines sit this high, where cold nights cut battery life. The 4,000 mAh cell is specified for a shift, and sites will want trials in their own winter.

Dust that can be combustible

Concentrator dust is the commonest hazard. Zone 21 is the design target for areas where combustible dust can form layers or clouds.

Coastal sites with salt

Ica and Ilo are on the coast. IP68 sealing is relevant to salt and sand, and rinsing should be part of the routine.

Different owners, different standards

Peru's operators are owned from Mexico, Australia, Canada, the United States, China and elsewhere. Complete documentation in Spanish and English is the common currency.

Dispersed sites, one console

Android Enterprise and existing MDM consoles let an operator manage handsets across several sites with the same policies.

Use cases · Mining

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in mining

Concentrator01

Plant rounds

Operators walk grinding and flotation lines recording readings and photographing faults. A handset for classified areas replaces a radio, a camera and a clipboard.

Shutdowns02

Mill outages and relining

Large contractor crews work in classified plant during shutdowns. Enrolled handsets with permits and isolation lists help keep one register.

Remote sites03

Pipelines, haul roads and load-outs

Staff on long routes need position, photographs and robust coverage handling. GNSS and a tough camera suit that work.

Frequently asked questions

Which regulation governs safety at Peruvian mines?

The mining safety and health regulation is DS 024-2016-EM, amended by DS 023-2017-EM and DS 034-2023-EM. Equipment requirements for classified areas come from the operator's own classification and procurement rules in addition.

Does approval at one mine carry to the others?

No. Each operator runs its own procurement and HSE review, so approval at one site does not carry automatically to another.

Which mines are most relevant to a Zone 21 device?

Those with large concentrators, such as Antamina, Cerro Verde, Las Bambas, Toromocho and Southern Copper's mines. The operator's own dust testing decides which areas are classified.

When can mining operators evaluate a unit?

After certification, which is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Evaluation now is limited to the datasheet and certification schedule.
