Explosion proof mobile phone for power generation in Peru

Peru's electricity comes from a mix of Camisea-fed gas turbines and a large hydroelectric base. This page is about where an explosion proof mobile phone is relevant in Peruvian power generation, which is mainly at gas-fired stations around Lima and Chilca, and why hydro stations and transmission corridors are a different conversation. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed in Peruvian power

Gas supplies about a third of Peru's electricity, and most of it burns in stations south and east of Lima. Published plant lists include Kallpa, Chilca 1 and Fénix in the Chilca area and the Ventanilla and Santa Rosa stations in Lima, all using Camisea gas delivered by pipeline and distributed in the capital by Cálidda. These are classified for gas where fuel is received, pressure is reduced and metered, and fed to turbines. Hydroelectric stations, which supply much of the rest, are not normally classified areas at all, apart from isolated fuel and chemical stores. So the market for an Ex handset in power is concentrated at a small number of gas stations, with maintenance crews who also travel to substations and dams that are not classified. That makes the device decision about where it will be carried, not about the whole grid.

Stations and operators

Kallpa
Gas-fired station operated by Kallpa Generación at Chilca.
Chilca 1
Gas-fired station operated by Energía del Sur.
Fénix Power
Gas-fired station at Chilca using Camisea gas.
Ventanilla and Santa Rosa
Gas-fired stations in the Lima area.
Cálidda
Distributes natural gas in Lima to power plants and other customers.
Hydro operators
Large hydro stations such as the Mantaro complex, mostly outside classified areas.

Typical classified areas

Gas receiving and metering stations
Where pipeline gas enters the plant.
Pressure-reduction skids
Fuel-gas conditioning ahead of the turbines.
Turbine enclosures and gas trains
Areas around gas turbines, subject to the manufacturer's and operator's classification.
Generator hydrogen systems
Where large generators use hydrogen cooling, a group IIC question.
Diesel backup storage
Standby fuel tanks and day tanks.
Battery rooms
Hydrogen evolution from lead-acid batteries, where fitted.

What power plants do to a handset

Chilca and Lima are on or near the coast, with salt, sand and heat. Stations are compact compared with a mine, so a round is short and the main need is control of what is carried into a few classified buildings. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and has IP68 sealing; certification is in progress and no certificate has yet been issued.

A concentrated Ex footprint

Classified areas are a small part of a station. Procurement should ask operators how many roles actually need an Ex device before buying for a whole site.

Desert coast conditions

Chilca is on the coast south of Lima, with salt-laden air and wind-blown sand. IP68 sealing is relevant, and cleaning between shifts is sensible.

Turbine halls with noise and heat

Gas turbine enclosures are loud and hot. The handset's audio and loudspeaker should be tested in those conditions, and operators may prefer text and photo reporting to voice.

Hydrogen where generators are cooled by it

Where large generators use hydrogen, the gas group is IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target includes IIC, subject to the certificate.

Maintenance crews who travel

Crews servicing several stations and remote substations carry a handset across classified and unclassified sites. A managed device with a single policy suits that pattern.

Use cases · Power

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in power

Generation01

Gas station rounds

Operators check gas receiving, metering and turbine areas, recording readings and photographing faults. A handset for classified areas replaces a radio and a camera.

Maintenance02

Outage and inspection work

During planned outages, contractors work near fuel systems and generators. Enrolled handsets carrying permits help the outage manager track who is where.

Questions · Power

Frequently asked questions

Do hydroelectric stations need an explosion proof phone?

Generally no, since hydro generation is not normally a classified area. The exceptions are fuel stores, battery rooms and chemical stores, which the site's own study covers.

Which gas stations use Camisea gas?

Published plant lists show Kallpa, Chilca 1, Fénix and the Lima-area Ventanilla and Santa Rosa stations as gas-fired. Confirm the current operators with each company, since ownership and names change.

Does the device suit turbine halls?

It is designed for Zone 1 and for harsh conditions, but turbine halls are noisy and hot, so trial audio, display and temperature performance on site.

When can a power company evaluate a unit?

After certification. No certificate has been issued, so evaluation now is limited to the datasheet and the certification schedule.
