Explosion proof mobile phone for Antamina, Peru

Antamina, in the San Marcos district of Huari province, Ancash, is a copper-zinc mine owned by BHP, Glencore, Teck and Mitsubishi, with its concentrate sent 302 km by slurry pipeline to the port of Punta Lobitos. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms people who have to decide what an explosion proof mobile phone is allowed to do at the pit, the concentrator and the port in Peru, and what paperwork it needs to arrive with. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed at Antamina

Antamina is best understood as three places joined by one pipe. The first is the high-Andean mine and concentrator, where ore from the pits is crushed, ground and floated into copper and zinc concentrates, with molybdenum and silver recovered as by-products. The second is the pipeline, 302 km of slurry line running down to the coast. The third is Punta Lobitos, near Huarmey, where the concentrate is dewatered and stored before it is loaded onto ships. Hazardous areas are concentrated in the first and third places and are mostly of two kinds: combustible dust where dry material is handled, and flammable vapour where reagents and fuels are stored and dosed. The pipeline itself carries a water-based slurry, so it is a long inspection route rather than a classified line, and the reason to carry a rugged handset there is distance and weather rather than gas.

Owners and who works on site

BHP and Glencore
33.75 per cent each of Compañía Minera Antamina, according to the company's published shareholding.
Teck and Mitsubishi
Teck holds 22.5 per cent and Mitsubishi Corporation 10 per cent.
Compañía Minera Antamina
The operating company, with its own engineering, procurement and HSE functions in Peru.
Mining and maintenance contractors
Shutdown, mill relining and earthworks crews who arrive under their own HSE plans and need a device the site will let them carry.

Areas where classification questions arise

Crushing and conveying
Dry ore transfer points where dust accumulates on structures and ledges.
Grinding and flotation
Mill buildings, reagent stores and dosing rooms; the classification follows the substances the site actually uses.
Concentrate filtration and storage
Copper and zinc concentrate handled dry once dewatered, with dust properties set by the operator's own testing.
Fuel storage and fleet fuelling
Diesel for the haul fleet, stored and dispensed in the open.
Pipeline pump and valve stations
Remote slurry stations; mostly an access and communications matter rather than a gas hazard.
Punta Lobitos port
Concentrate dewatering, shed storage and ship-loading areas on the Huarmey coast.
Built for local conditions

What Antamina does to a handset

Whether a device may be carried into a classified area is a certificate question. Whether it is still working at the end of a shift at this site is an engineering question. Antamina's mine sits above 4,000 metres and its port sits at sea level, and the same phone is expected to cope with both. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; none of these points is a claim about a certificate that has not yet been issued.

OSAndroid 16

Thin air, cold nights and strong sun

At altitude the mine is cold after dark and harsh in daylight, and lithium cells lose capacity in the cold. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a working shift, and the temperature class on the final certificate is the figure to check against the operator's own area drawings.

Fine dust in the mill and conveyor galleries

Dry crushing and conveying leave dust on every ledge. IP68 sealing keeps it out of ports and seams, and the Zone 21 design target is aimed at areas where combustible dust can form a layer or a cloud.

A port on a desert coast

Punta Lobitos is salt-laden and windblown, nothing like the mine at 4,000 metres. IP68 is relevant to both environments, and site teams will want to confirm how the device is cleaned between the two.

Long routes along a pipeline

Inspection crews drive and walk remote stretches of a 302 km line, often out of coverage. Four-constellation GNSS gives a position for a defect report, and the 50 MP camera records what was found.

One console for four shareholders' expectations

Android Enterprise and the usual MDM consoles let Antamina's own IT team enrol and restrict units centrally, including disabling the camera in controlled areas, so the policy comes from the operator rather than from the device maker.

Use cases · Antamina

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Antamina

Concentrator01

Mill rounds and reagent checks

An operator walking the grinding and flotation floors records readings, photographs a leaking seal and calls the control room. One handset in the classified area replaces the radio, the camera and the paper round sheet, subject to the operator's own classification of each room.

Pipeline02

Pump and valve station inspections

A technician driving to a remote station needs a location, a photograph of the fault and a way to send both when coverage returns. A rugged, enrolled phone with GNSS and offline-capable apps suits that job better than a consumer handset in a pocket.

Port03

Ship-loading and shed operations

On vessel days the port fills with surveyors, agents and contractors. An enrolled handset carrying the permit, the contact list and the loading plan helps site safety staff keep one list of what is allowed in the area.

Questions · Antamina

Frequently asked questions

Which hazardous areas at Antamina would an explosion proof phone actually be used in?

That is a question for the operator's area classification study, which is the controlling document at any mine. In general terms, dust areas in crushing, conveying and concentrate handling, and flammable vapour in reagent and fuel storage, are where a Zone 21 and Zone 1 device is relevant. The slurry pipeline itself is not a gas line.

Four owners: whose engineering standard does a supplier have to meet?

The operating company runs its own engineering and procurement, and its requirements are what a supplier is assessed against. Ask Antamina's procurement and HSE teams which technical documents they want, and expect questions that reflect good practice at all four shareholders, not just one.

Does the device work at the port as well as the mine?

It is designed for the same Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty in either place, with IP68 sealing. Port areas have their own classification drawings and shipping rules, so confirm the specific areas with the site before any unit is taken in.
