Explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemicals in the UAE

Ruwais is where the UAE makes polymers, fertiliser and, soon, a new family of chemicals: Borouge's polyolefin plants, the Ruwais fertiliser complex and TA'ZIZ's chemicals and transition-fuels zone under construction. This page is for the HSE and telecoms teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone in the United Arab Emirates for gas, vapour and dust areas on one chemicals site. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is being certified ahead of its Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

UAE petrochemicals at Ruwais: Borouge, FERTIL and TA'ZIZ

Al Ruwais Industrial City holds a fertiliser plant run by Ruwais Fertilizer Industries and Borouge's petrochemical complex, alongside the refinery and fractionation plant. TA'ZIZ, a joint venture of ADNOC and ADQ, is building a new chemicals zone beside them. Its first phase is planned to reach 4.7 million tonnes a year by 2028, covering methanol, low-carbon ammonia, PVC, ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer and caustic soda, and several of those will be produced in the UAE for the first time. The methanol plant, a Proman partnership, has been awarded to Samsung E&A as EPC contractor. A site this size has three working patterns at once: live operations, construction, and commissioning, each with different crews and different classified boundaries.

Operators and projects

Borouge
Polyethylene and polypropylene at Ruwais; Borouge 4 adds a 1.5 million tonne ethane cracker.
Ruwais Fertilizer Industries
Fertiliser plant on the same industrial city.
TA'ZIZ
Joint venture of ADNOC and ADQ developing the chemicals and transition-fuels zone.

First UAE methanol plant, with Proman and EPC contractor Samsung E&A.
Ruwais Industrial City
Shared refinery, fractionation, polymers and marine terminal infrastructure.

Classified areas on a chemicals site

Crackers and reactors
Ethane, ethylene and propylene gas, with hydrogen in some processes.
Polymer pelletising and bagging
Combustible polymer dust; the dust group matters.
Methanol and ammonia
Flammable liquids and gases handled in bulk, with toxicity concerns that need separate monitors.
Vinyl chloride and chlorine chain
Flammable and toxic process fluids, planned for the TA'ZIZ zone.
Construction and commissioning areas
Temporary classified areas that change as systems are energised.

What a chemicals site asks of a handset

A chemicals complex adds toxic hazards and construction churn on top of gas and dust. Four points follow.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Gas and dust on one site

Borouge combines Zone 1 gas with Zone 21 polymer dust, and a new zone adds more gases. One device designed for both, with the group and temperature class checked per area, simplifies issue to a mixed workforce.

Toxic gases need their own detectors

Ammonia, chlorine and vinyl chloride are toxic as well as flammable. Intrinsic safety addresses ignition, not toxicity, so personal gas monitors stay mandatory. The handset can pair with a detector over Bluetooth; it does not replace one.

Construction crews change classified areas

During commissioning, areas change status as systems are energised. Central enrolment lets the owner update device policy, restrict the camera and wipe units when a contractor demobilises.

Long rounds on a very large site

The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a shift and four-constellation GNSS records position on a large, repetitive site where descriptions of location are unreliable.

Use cases · Petrochemicals

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Polymers01

Cracker and bagging area rounds

An operator checks readings, photographs a blocked filter or dust build-up and calls the control room from the same handset.

Construction02

Commissioning punch lists

Snag lists and photographs of completed systems are collected in one enrolled handset, with the photographs attached to the handover pack.

Utilities03

Shared services and marine terminal work

Cooling, fractionation and terminal staff cover a shared site, and a managed handset follows the technician across the boundaries.

The approval path

Two gates for petrochemicals

National conformity comes through MoIAT's ECAS-Ex scheme, built on IECEx certification, with TDRA approval for the radio. All of these are in progress and none is issued. Operator approvals then apply separately. Borouge's own supplier approval, ADNOC's registration and In-Country Value process and TA'ZIZ's procedures are not ours to describe, and we have not verified them; ask procurement. See also the Borouge page and the Ruwais page.

National conformity
MoIAT ECAS-Ex registration, built on an IECEx Certificate of Conformity. In progress.
Operator approvals
Borouge, ADNOC and TA'ZIZ each run their own supplier processes.
Toxic hazards
Personal monitors and site rules apply regardless of the Ex certificate.
What to supply
Zone, gas and dust group, temperature class.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for UAE petrochemical use yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. SAMS has no approval, order or relationship with Borouge, TA'ZIZ or any other operator.

Does it cover polymer dust as well as gas?

It is designed to: the Zone 1 and Zone 21 target addresses gas and combustible dust. The dust group and temperature limit will be fixed on the certificate.

Does Ex certification make it safe in ammonia or chlorine areas?

No. Intrinsic safety deals with ignition. Toxic exposure is controlled by personal monitors, procedures and site rules.
