Explosion proof mobile phone for ADNOC Gas sites

ADNOC Gas runs the processing end of Abu Dhabi's gas chain: the Habshan complex, the Asab, Bu Hasa and Bab plants, the Das Island processing and liquefaction trains, and the fractionation plant at Ruwais. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams in the United Arab Emirates who have to decide what an explosion proof mobile phone must be certified to before it is carried past a compressor train. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is being certified ahead of its Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where ADNOC Gas works: Habshan, Ruwais and Das Island

ADNOC Gas takes gas from onshore fields and from offshore, separates it into sales gas, natural gas liquids, condensate and sulphur, and ships the liquids and LNG. ADNOC describes the Habshan complex as five plants with 14 processing trains and a capacity of 6.1 billion standard cubic feet a day, and lists 34 processing trains and four fractionation trains across the group. Habshan sits in the Al Dhafra desert, so a round there is a long, hot walk over open plant. Das Island is the opposite case: a small island far out in the Gulf where processing trains, three LNG trains, a jetty and the accommodation share a few square kilometres. Ruwais, on the western coast, holds the only NGL fractionation plant in the country. Whatever the site, hydrocarbon gas is in the process, and wherever it can be released the area is classified.

Facilities and operators

ADNOC Gas
Operator of the processing plants, LNG and fractionation; the group lists 34 processing trains and four NGL fractionation trains.
Habshan complex
Five plants and 14 processing trains in the desert, producing sales gas, NGLs, condensate and sulphur.
Das Island
Five gas processing trains and three LNG trains; the Adgas liquefaction plant began exporting in 1977.
Ruwais fractionation
The only NGL fractionation plant in the UAE, inside Al Ruwais Industrial Complex.

Classified areas and what is in them

Compression and treating
Compressor halls, sweetening and dehydration units; leak points at seals, flanges and relief lines.
NGL recovery and fractionation
Ethane, propane and butane; the heavier ones settle in drains and low points rather than dispersing.
Sulphur handling
Molten and granulated sulphur; elemental sulphur dust is combustible, which is why dust areas appear here.

What a gas plant does to a handset

A gas plant tests a phone in different ways at each site. These are the five points that come up when HSE and telecoms teams review a device for gas processing work.

Gas group IIC is a margin, not a sour-gas claim

Methane and propane fall in gas group IIA and hydrogen sulphide in IIB, while IIC is reserved for hydrogen and acetylene. The IS-04Z1 target of Ex ib IIC T4 therefore sits above everything a gas plant normally releases, and the certificate will state the exact scope when it is issued. Sour gas also brings a toxic hazard that no phone addresses: a personal H2S monitor stays on the belt.

Heat on open plant

Habshan summers are long and a compressor hall radiates on top of the ambient figure. The T4 target means a maximum surface temperature of 135 degrees Celsius, and the number on the certificate is the one your instrumentation engineer compares with the temperature class in the area classification.

An island with no spare shelf

Das Island is reached by sea or air, so a failed handset is not replaced the same shift. IP68 sealing, a full-shift 4,000 mAh battery and rugged build are specified with that isolation in mind.

Use cases · ADNOC Gas

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Operations01

Compressor train rounds at Habshan

An operator checking vibration, seal-gas pressure and lube-oil levels across a train needs readings, a photograph and a call to the control room in one device. Designed for Zone 1, it removes the radio and the paper round sheet from the walk.

Maintenance02

Sulphur and fractionation inspection at Ruwais

Fractionation columns, bullets and sulphur handling mix gas and dust duties on one site. A single handset specified for Zone 1 and Zone 21 spares a technician from swapping devices when the job crosses an area boundary.

Offshore logistics03

Das Island changeovers and jetty work

Crews arriving by sea or air inherit a plant they do not know. A managed handset carries the site directory, permit forms and contact list, and the same unit can be enrolled in the ship-to-shore routine at the LNG berth.

The approval path

Two gates for ADNOC Gas

National conformity comes first. In the UAE, electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres is regulated by MoIAT through the ECAS-Ex scheme, which refers to the IECEx rules and draws on an IECEx test certificate, test report and quality audit report. IECEx certification and ECAS registration are both in the IS-04Z1 programme and neither is complete. The second gate is ADNOC's own supplier registration and technical review, which runs separately. We do not describe ADNOC Gas's internal criteria for handheld devices: ask the plant's procurement and HSE teams which category applies.

National conformity
MoIAT ECAS-Ex registration, built on an IECEx Certificate of Conformity scoped to gas group IIC. In progress.
Radio approval
TDRA registration for the radio inside the handset, separate from the Ex certificate. In progress.
ADNOC supplier route
Supplier registration and pre-qualification through ADNOC, with an In-Country Value certificate scored into bids.
What to ask the plant
The zone, gas group and temperature class for the areas in scope, and which entity holds the supply.
Questions · ADNOC Gas

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for ADNOC Gas sites?

No. National certification is a prerequisite for ADNOC's own review, and neither is complete. SAMS has no approval, order or relationship with ADNOC Gas; this page describes what the device is designed for and what your teams are likely to ask.

Does the certification cover sour gas specifically?

Hydrogen sulphide is a gas group IIB substance, so a group IIC target covers it with margin. The temperature class and scope will be fixed on the certificate once issued. Certification addresses ignition, not toxicity, so site H2S rules and personal monitors still apply.

Can the handset replace a personal H2S monitor?

No. It is a communication and inspection device. It supports Bluetooth for pairing with gas detectors, but the detector remains the safety-critical instrument and the site rules on carrying it are unchanged.
