Explosion proof mobile phone for oil and gas in the UAE

Oil and gas in the United Arab Emirates is mostly Abu Dhabi and mostly ADNOC: desert fields, offshore islands, gas plants, refineries and export terminals joined by pipeline. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone that works along that whole chain. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is being certified ahead of its Q4 2026 launch; no certificate has been issued yet. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Oil and gas in the UAE: from wellhead to export berth

The chain starts onshore in fields such as Asab, Bab and Bu Hasa and offshore at Upper Zakum, Umm Shaif and other fields run by ADMA-OPCO and ZADCO. Gas goes to the Habshan complex and to Das Island, where three LNG trains have loaded cargoes since 1977. Crude goes by pipeline to Jebel Dhanna and Zirku for export and to the refinery at Ruwais, while the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline carries crude from Habshan to Fujairah outside the Strait of Hormuz. Each stage has different hazards and a different working pattern, from dispersed desert wellpads to crowded refinery shutdowns to isolated island rotations. A phone chosen for one stage may be wrong for another, which is why the area classification should be checked site by site.

The chain and its operators

ADNOC Onshore
Asab, Bab, Bu Hasa, Sahil and Shah fields, with pipeline to Jebel Dhanna.
ADNOC Offshore
ADMA-OPCO from Das Island and ZADCO from Zirku, covering Upper Zakum and other offshore fields.
ADNOC Gas
Habshan, Das Island and the Ruwais fractionation plant.
ADNOC Refining
The Ruwais refinery complex, fed from Jebel Dhanna.
Fujairah and Jebel Dhanna
Terminals at either end of the Habshan to Fujairah pipeline route.

What changes along the chain

Wells and wellpads
Spread over very large areas; heat and distance matter most.
Offshore islands
Salt, isolation and helicopter or boat logistics; sour gas on some developments.
Gas processing
Compressors, sweetening and fractionation, with sulphur handling and dust.
Refining
Hydrogen service, turnarounds and heavy contractor presence.
Terminals
Ship-shore interface and tank farms.
Built for local conditions

What the sector asks of a handset

Across the chain the same device meets very different conditions. These are the four patterns that differ most between stages.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Dispersed work needs fleet control

Onshore staff are scattered over a wide area, so management matters more than robustness. Enrolling units in the operator's own EMM or MDM console lets telecoms push policy, restrict the camera and wipe a lost handset from one place.

Isolation needs sealing and spares

Offshore, a failed handset waits for the next boat or helicopter. IP68 sealing and a full-shift 4,000 mAh battery are specified with that in mind, and spares should be planned at the base, not the platform.

Gas group needs checking per stage

Natural gas, ethane, propane and hydrogen sit in different gas groups, and the highest group in a plant sets the requirement. The IS-04Z1 target of Ex ib IIC T4 is the most demanding group, and the temperature class is checked against each area.

Photography is controlled

Most operators restrict photography at plants. Because the camera is software-managed through Android 16, the policy can be set per area from the console rather than by choosing a phone without one.

Use cases · Oil and gas

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Upstream01

Wellpad and island rounds

Operators record readings, photograph defects and report a position, whether on a desert wellpad or an Upper Zakum island.

Midstream02

Gas plant and pipeline station work

Compressor rounds and valve-station visits use one device for the work order, the photograph and the call to the control room.

Downstream03

Refinery and terminal shutdown work

Contractor crews issued managed handsets carry the permit, the directory and the report, and the units are wiped at demobilisation.

The approval path

Two gates for UAE oil and gas

National conformity comes through MoIAT's ECAS-Ex scheme, built on IECEx certification, with TDRA approval for the radio; none of these is issued for the IS-04Z1 yet. The second gate is the operator's own approval: ADNOC's supplier registration, pre-qualification and In-Country Value scoring for its group companies, and separate procedures at others. Detailed pages cover ADNOC Onshore, ADNOC Offshore, ADNOC Gas and ADNOC Refining. We have not verified any operator's handheld device criteria and do not describe them.

National conformity
MoIAT ECAS-Ex registration, built on IECEx. In progress.
ADNOC group companies
Supplier registration, pre-qualification and ICV certificate.
Other operators
Each runs its own approval route; ask procurement.
What to supply
Zone, gas group, temperature class and the area in question.
Questions · Oil & Gas

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for UAE oil and gas use yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and IECEx, ATEX and ECAS certification are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. SAMS has no approval, order or relationship with ADNOC or any other operator.

Does it cover both onshore and offshore work?

It is designed to. The same Zone 1, Ex ib IIC T4 target applies across stages, but each plant has its own classification and the certificate scope should be checked against it.

Will ADNOC accept it as an approved device?

That decision follows ADNOC's own review and ICV process, which builds on the IECEx certificate once issued, not the other way round.
