Where it works in Spain

Spanish classified areas follow the coast and one inland exception. Repsol runs five industrial complexes at Cartagena, Tarragona, Puertollano, A Coruña and Petronor near Bilbao. Moeve, the company that traded as Cepsa until October 2024, runs La Rábida at Huelva and San Roque in the Campo de Gibraltar, which together carry close to a third of national distillation capacity. Add the BP refinery at Castellón, the Tarragona chemical belt behind the refinery there, and a regasification network with more import terminals than any other European country, and the picture is a set of dense, widely separated islands of hazardous area work.

Operators and contractors such as Repsol, Petronor and Moeve need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Tarragona, Cartagena and Escombreras and Huelva. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Spanish site conditions

The Spanish variable that catches equipment out is heat. Summer temperatures on a Mediterranean or Andalusian plant push a handset harder than any specification sheet suggests, and everything else follows from that.

For evaluators in Spain, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Summer heat and the temperature class; Two zone types on one site; Coastal air and wash-down; Long distances between complexes; Spanish in the file and on the screen; Configurable to the site rules.

Summer heat and the temperature class

The target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. T4 is about the surface temperature the device may present in the atmosphere, and it is judged against the ambient range on the certificate, which is exactly the line a Spanish reviewer checks first for a plant that runs above forty degrees in August.

Two zone types on one site

Zone 21 dust protection sits in the same certification programme as the gas marking. Fertiliser handling, mineral processing and the ceramic industry mean powder areas here are not an afterthought sitting beside the gas areas, they are a separate business on the same licence.

Coastal air and wash-down

Salt, sun and pressure washing are the routine at a refinery on the Mediterranean or the Atlantic. IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at that duty cycle rather than at office use.

Long distances between complexes

The nearest sister plant may be five hundred kilometres away. Four-constellation GNSS, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi keep one device useful on a site, on a jetty and on the road between them, which matters when engineering support is centralised.

Spanish in the file and on the screen

Android 16 carries a Spanish interface, and the manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity are produced in Spanish alongside English. Buyers here treat Spanish documentation as part of lawful supply, not an extra to request later.

Configurable to the site rules

Android 16 supports EMM and MDM, so the camera, location services and the application list can be set centrally. On a Seveso site with a photography ban that is what turns a refusal at the gate into a controlled permission.

Approvals in Spain

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

ATEX is the whole product-side requirement, transposed by Real Decreto 144/2016, and no Spanish approval follows it. What a Spanish evaluation adds is a second reading against the electrical code: engineers here check equipment for classified areas against ITC-BT-029 as well as against the certificate, and they expect the documentation in Spanish.

Regulatory route · Spain

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

The product route is short and there is no Spanish scheme at the end of it. ATEX 2014/34/EU was transposed by Real Decreto 144/2016 of 8 April, so a notified body certificate, the CE marking and the EU declaration of conformity are the complete requirement. Radio conformity runs under the Radio Equipment Directive, with market surveillance handled by the telecommunications administration under the Secretaría de Estado de Telecomunicaciones. The practical Spanish addition is documentary rather than regulatory: instructions, safe-use information and the declaration in Spanish, because that is what procurement will accept and what an inspector will expect to find on the shelf.

The duties that decide what you actually buy belong to the employer. Real Decreto 681/2003 transposes Directive 1999/92/EC and requires the documento de protección contra explosiones, with the zoning, the ignition source assessment and the reasoning for every item of equipment selected for each zone. The INSST publishes the guía técnica that most Spanish assessors follow, and the Inspección de Trabajo y Seguridad Social enforces it, alongside the industry departments of the autonomous communities. Two other layers sit beside it. Real Decreto 842/2002, the low voltage electrical regulation, contains ITC-BT-029 for installations in areas with a risk of fire or explosion, and Spanish electrical engineers read equipment against it out of habit. On major hazard sites Real Decreto 840/2015 applies the Seveso III rules, which is why photography, ignition sources and equipment registers are controlled tightly at the gate.

Use cases · Spain

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Spain includes: A parada at Cartagena or Tarragona; Ship unloading at a regasification plant; Moving between plants in the Tarragona belt; Fuel transfer in Algeciras bay.

Refining01

A parada at Cartagena or Tarragona

A Spanish turnaround compresses a year of maintenance into a few weeks in the heat, with contractor crews rotating through one gate. A hazardous area handset enrolled in the site console keeps the work pack, the isolation photograph and the sign-off in one system instead of on paper that leaves with the crew.

LNG and gas02

Ship unloading at a regasification plant

Spain has more import terminals than any other country in Europe, and unloading runs to a vessel schedule at Barcelona, Cartagena, Huelva, Sagunto, Bilbao and Mugardos. A device that works on the jetty, in the tank area and in the control building removes the swap at each boundary.

Chemicals03

Moving between plants in the Tarragona belt

The Tarragona cluster is a run of separate companies sharing pipelines, roads and a contractor population. When one device covers Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is locked down by policy, a maintenance engineer can cross from a solvent plant to a polymer plant without changing equipment at the fence.

Bunkering and ports04

Fuel transfer in Algeciras bay

The Campo de Gibraltar combines a refinery, a tank farm and one of the busiest bunkering anchorages in Europe. Transfer supervision happens outdoors, in vapour, often alone, and the value of a certified handset there is that the check-in, the camera and the radio call are the same object.

How to buy · Spain

How to evaluate and buy in Spain

Nothing here needs a purchase order, because the device has not launched. The sequence below lets your internal approval and our certification programme run at the same time rather than in series.

  1. 01

    Send the classification

Give us the zones, the gas group and the temperature class from your documento de protección contra explosiones, the ambient range the plant actually reaches, and how many users you expect. Enquiries go to SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and certificate schedule

You receive the specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification in progress, which is enough for both the labour file and the electrical review to start before anything is orderable.

  3. 03

Put a unit through a real week

Evaluation units go to Spanish operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful trial here covers a hot afternoon in the plant, enrolment in your own console, the camera rules at your gate, and a full shift on one charge.

  4. 04

    Agree the supply route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Spanish or Iberian distribution partner, or direct where a customer prefers it, with Spanish documentation in the box. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a stated quantity and configuration.

Questions · Spain

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Spain?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Spain →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and certification is in progress. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and no unit is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering that use exists.

What is the price of an ATEX phone in Spain?

There is no published price before launch. Pre-launch pricing is given against a defined quantity, configuration and support scope, and it follows the certificate rather than an order date. Anyone quoting a firm figure today for an uncertified hazardous area device is quoting for something that does not yet exist as a certified product.

Does Spain require a national approval on top of ATEX?

No. Real Decreto 144/2016 transposed ATEX 2014/34/EU, so a notified body certificate and the CE marking are the whole product-side requirement and nothing Spanish follows them. The Spanish additions are practical: documentation in Spanish, and an electrical review that reads ITC-BT-029 alongside the certificate.

How does the device handle Spanish summer temperatures?

Through the certified ambient range rather than a marketing claim. Temperature class T4 is assessed against a stated ambient range, and that range is what a plant running above forty degrees should compare against its own conditions. The figures will be on the certificate and the datasheet, and they are the right thing to argue about during evaluation.

Is this a flameproof mobile or an intrinsically safe one?

Intrinsically safe. Flameproof, the Ex d concept, contains an explosion inside a heavy enclosure, while intrinsic safety, Ex ib, limits the energy in the circuit so ignition cannot start. Searches for an explosion proof phone usually mean a phone for a Zone 1 area, and Ex ib is the concept that yields something light enough to carry all shift.

Will the manual and the interface be in Spanish?

Yes. Android 16 carries a Spanish interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Spanish alongside English. Spanish buyers treat that as a condition of acceptance, so it is planned into the launch rather than added when someone asks.

Can we write it into our DPCE before launch?

You can prepare the entry. The datasheet gives the target marking string, temperature class and equipment protection level, so the selection reasoning can be drafted and reviewed internally. It should not be signed off as installed equipment until the certificate number exists to sit beside it.

How will repair and battery replacement work here?

Through a controlled route, because work on an intrinsically safe device must be done by a recognised facility for the certification to remain valid. A service arrangement covering Spain is part of the launch programme, and the terms can be reviewed under a pre-launch agreement before they are published.
