Explosion proof mobile phone for Refining and Petrochemicals in Spain

Spain has nine refineries and a petrochemical belt at Tarragona that is the largest in southern Europe. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and procurement staff at those sites who want an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain that handles refinery vapour, hydrogen and chemical process areas alike. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Spanish refineries and petrochemical plants are classified

Repsol runs five refineries: Cartagena, Tarragona, Puertollano, A Coruña and Petronor at Muskiz. Moeve, formerly Cepsa, runs La Rábida at Huelva and San Roque in the Campo de Gibraltar. BP runs the coking refinery at Castellón, and a small bitumen refinery at Tarragona makes the ninth. The petrochemical side is concentrated at Tarragona, where Dow, BASF, Covestro, Ercros and Repsol Química share a cluster, with further chemical activity at Huelva and Puertollano. The hazards are the standard ones. Hydrocarbon vapour sits around furnaces, columns, pumps and tank farms, hydrogen is present in treating and reforming units, and the petrochemical plants add ethylene, propylene and other flammable gases. Dust appears where solids are handled, such as catalyst, coke, sulphur and polymer powder. Spanish refineries also run periodic turnarounds that bring large contractor workforces through the gate.

What a refinery does to a handset

The area classification sets whether a phone can be carried. After that, the way a refinery is organised sets how much use it gets. Four points stand out.

Gas groups from IIA to IIC

Refinery vapour is typically IIA or IIB, while hydrogen and some petrochemical gases need IIC. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so a single handset can move between them.

Dust in specific places

Dust zones appear only where solids are handled. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 21 dust as well as Zone 1 gas, so crews are not issued two phones, but zone assignment stays with the plant.

Stops that pull in thousands

A refinery turnaround brings large temporary crews. Android Enterprise and MDM let the site enrol handsets quickly and withdraw them when the stop ends.

Different sites, different rhythms

Puertollano is inland and runs on road and pipeline logistics, while Cartagena, Tarragona, Huelva and Castellón work ships and berths. A handset that serves the jetty crew in the morning and the tank farm crew in the afternoon has to handle both, and site-specific camera and location policy in the console is how an operator sets that up. Ask each refinery which rules apply.

Heat, salt and wash-down

Most Spanish refineries are coastal. IP68 sealing is aimed at salt air and pressure washing, and the certificate will carry the ambient range to check against summer conditions.

Use cases · Refining

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in refining.

Turnaround01

Stop and start-up record keeping

Isolation photographs, test results and sign-offs move from paper to the handset. The record is in one system and does not leave with the crew.

Operations02

Unit and tank farm rounds

An operator records readings, photographs a defect and calls the control room from one device carried inside the boundary.

Chemicals03

Moving between plants in the Tarragona belt

A maintenance engineer crossing from one company's plant to another keeps one handset, subject to each operator's own approval and enrolment rules.

Questions · Refining

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Spain

Which Spanish refineries are covered?

Repsol's five, Moeve's two, BP Castellón and the Tarragona bitumen refinery make nine. See the pages on an explosion proof phone for Repsol and for BP Castellón.

Do all refineries need Zone 21?

No. Dust zones depend on whether solids are handled. A refinery with a coker or sulphur handling has more of them than one without, and the explosion protection document shows which areas apply. Gas areas, which dominate, remain Zone 1 and Zone 2 matters.

Does every refinery run its own supplier approval?

Large operators normally do. Ask the procurement and HSE team at the specific site what a supplier has to provide.

Is the device certified for Spanish refineries?

No. Certification is in progress, and no unit is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate exists.
