Explosion proof mobile phone for Fertiberia in Spain

Fertiberia makes ammonia and fertiliser at Puertollano, Palos de la Frontera, Avilés and other Spanish sites, with hydrogen, ammonia and fertiliser dust all present under one licence. This page is for the HSE, maintenance and procurement staff there who want an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain that can follow a person from a synthesis loop to a granulation plant. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at Fertiberia's Spanish plants

An ammonia plant combines hazards that a refinery spreads across separate units. Natural gas and hydrogen feed the synthesis loop, ammonia is stored and moved as a refrigerated or pressurised liquid, and downstream plants turn it into nitrates and compound fertilisers that leave as powder or granules. Ammonia is a toxic gas that is hard to ignite and sits in gas group IIA, while hydrogen is IIC, so both appear on classification drawings. The solids side is a separate question: whether granulation, drying and bagging areas need a dust zone is for the plant's explosion protection document, not a supplier. At Puertollano the picture is changing, because Iberdrola and Fertiberia have built a green hydrogen plant there with a 20 MW electrolyser and solar generation feeding the ammonia plant. Electrolysis adds hydrogen areas with their own classification, and the plant sits under major hazard regulation, which is why the gate controls ignition sources and photography.

What a fertiliser plant does to a handset

Fertiliser plants have two hazards that do not mix well: gas that can ignite and gas or dust that can harm people without igniting. A handset deals with the first. These are the conditions that matter.

Hydrogen sets the gas group

The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and IIC is the group that covers hydrogen. That matters most at Puertollano, where electrolysis and hydrogen storage add IIC areas beside the ammonia plant.

Gas and dust in one visit

A technician may start at a compressor house and end the shift in a granulation building. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so one device covers the round, subject to the zones the plant assigns.

Ammonia is a separate hazard

A handset is not a gas detector and does not detect ammonia. Personal gas monitors remain part of the kit, and the phone is for communication, photographs and records.

Dust, fertiliser residue and wash-down

Fertiliser dust is hygroscopic and corrosive. IP68 sealing lets a handset be rinsed after a shift, and the camera is useful for recording residue build-up on equipment.

Use cases · Fertiberia

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Fertiberia plants.

Operations01

Synthesis loop and storage rounds

An operator walking the ammonia plant records readings, photographs a weeping joint and reports it to the control room. A position fix on the report means the repair crew can find it.

Maintenance02

Hydrogen equipment work at Puertollano

Contractors installing or servicing electrolysers work under permit around IIC equipment. A managed handset carries drawings and permits and keeps unapproved applications off.

Logistics03

Granulation, bagging and dispatch

A supervisor moving between granulation, bagging and the warehouse needs messages, photographs and a position on one device. Camera settings can be controlled centrally for areas with photography limits.

Questions · Fertiberia

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Spain

Is ammonia a Zone 1 gas?

Ammonia is toxic and difficult to ignite, and classification depends on the release and ventilation conditions at each location. Zone assignment is a decision for the plant's explosion protection document, not for the handset supplier.

Does a Zone 21 handset matter in a fertiliser plant?

Only where the plant has classified an area as a dust zone. Granulation, drying and bagging are the areas to raise with the plant's HSE team. The device is designed for both gas and dust, so a single handset can cover both.

Will the hydrogen plant at Puertollano need special approval for a phone?

Any new equipment entering a classified area needs sign-off from the plant. The target marking includes IIC for hydrogen, but nothing is certified yet, and no handset should be issued before the certificate exists.

Do you supply Fertiberia?

No. SAMS has no supply relationship with Fertiberia, and this page describes only what the plants publish and what the IS-04Z1 is designed for.
