Zone 2 areas and Zone 1 pockets
Because Zone 1 equipment may be used in Zone 2, the handset can cover a whole terminal. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, with the marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.
Spain has more LNG import terminals than any other European country, and the gas network behind them runs through compression stations, storage fields and regulating sites. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms staff who need an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain that works across terminals, jetties and pipeline stations. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification programme in progress
The Spanish gas sector is built around coastal regasification terminals: Barcelona, Cartagena and Huelva on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, Gijón El Musel in Asturias, Bilbao in the Bizkaia estuary, Sagunto near Valencia and Mugardos in Galicia. Between them they receive LNG from ships, store it in cryogenic tanks, vaporise it and send it into the grid, and several also load LNG into road tankers. Beyond the terminals sit compression stations, regulating and metering sites, and underground storage at Serrablo, Yela and the Gaviota offshore field. The dominant gas is methane, group IIA, which is harder to ignite than hydrogen or ethylene, so many open-air areas are Zone 2, with Zone 1 around vents, sampling points and some pump and compressor areas. A device suitable for Zone 1 is also suitable for Zone 2, which is why operators often issue one handset across the whole plant.
Terminals are bright, open and well ventilated, which makes them look benign, but the work includes cold, wet and exposed conditions. Four points come up in practice.
Because Zone 1 equipment may be used in Zone 2, the handset can cover a whole terminal. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, with the marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.
A carrier arrives on schedule and the jetty, tank area and control room are in contact throughout. A single device with a camera and a call link removes the swap at each boundary.
Terminals are exposed coastal sites. IP68 sealing is aimed at spray and rain, and the certificate will state the ambient range for the cold end of the day.
Sampling points, odorant injection and nitrogen systems each carry their own considerations beyond methane, and they are usually where a technician is closest to a release point. The temperature class and gas group on the certificate are what an instrumentation engineer checks for those locations, and the figures will be on the datasheet.
Pipeline stations are visited alone, far from help. Four-constellation GNSS puts a position on the visit record and 4G keeps a call link up where coverage exists.
An operator walks the berth, the arms and the tank area while a carrier discharges. Readings, photographs and a call to the control room come from one device carried inside the boundary.
A technician driving between compression and metering stations needs drawings, a camera and a record of the visit. A managed handset keeps all three on one device.
Inspection firms working inside the terminal use the handset for photographs against equipment tags. Policy set in the console limits the applications available during the job.
Spain has six regasification terminals in active use plus the El Musel plant at Gijón, which Enagás owns. The exact number in service can change, so check the current position with the operators.
It is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and has IP68 sealing, so spray is not a concern. Marine use specifically has not been certified, and any jetty trial needs approval from the terminal operator.
No. Methane is group IIA. The IS-04Z1 target marking is IIC, which covers more demanding gases such as hydrogen, so a methane-only site is within range.
See our page on an explosion proof phone for Enagás, which covers the largest terminal operator and the transmission network. The Tarragona, Cartagena and Huelva areas that sit beside these terminals are covered under refining and petrochemicals.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Spain. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
