Explosion proof mobile phone for Repsol in Spain

Repsol runs five refining and chemical complexes in Spain: Cartagena, Tarragona, Puertollano and A Coruña, plus the Petronor refinery at Muskiz beside Bilbao. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and procurement staff at those complexes, and for the contractors who work through them, deciding what an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain has to be before it goes past a Repsol gate. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Repsol's classified areas are in Spain

The five complexes share a refining core but they are not alike. Cartagena sits in the Escombreras valley, sharing a harbour and a road network with a gas terminal and other industry. Tarragona is a refinery and petrochemical site inside the largest chemical cluster in southern Europe. Puertollano is the inland one, in Castilla-La Mancha, a refinery and chemical complex with no sea berth and a very different logistics pattern. A Coruña is a refinery on the Galician coast, and Petronor at Muskiz works crude and products across the Bilbao estuary. In all five the classified areas are the familiar ones: hydrocarbon vapour around process units, tank farms and loading, hydrogen in the hydrotreating and reforming units, and flammable liquid and gas in the petrochemical plants. Repsol has also announced renewable hydrogen and advanced-fuel projects at several of its Spanish sites, and every new unit arrives with its own classification drawing.

Classified units and areas

Crude and vacuum distillation
Hydrocarbon vapour around furnaces, columns and pumps.
Hydrotreating and reforming
Hydrogen-rich units where the gas group is IIC.
Conversion units
Cracking and related units running at high temperature and pressure.
Tank farms and pump houses
Floating-roof tanks, bund walls and long pipe racks, mostly outdoors.
Loading gantries and jetties
Road, rail and ship loading with vapour at every connection.
Petrochemical units
Flammable gas and liquid at the Tarragona and Puertollano plants.
Control rooms and laboratories
Normally outside the classified boundary, but entered from it.

What a Repsol complex does to a handset

Whether a phone may be carried at all is settled by the area classification. After that, a large refinery decides how well it copes. These are the conditions that matter most across Repsol's Spanish sites.

Hydrogen units set the gas group

The target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. The IIC group is the one that covers hydrogen, so a hydrotreater and a tank farm do not need different handsets. Your instrumentation engineer will still read the temperature class against the classification drawing for each unit.

A parada that fills the gate with contractors

A refinery turnaround brings hundreds of people from dozens of firms through the same gate. Android Enterprise and MDM enrolment lets the site, or the lead contractor, enrol handsets, push the permit and work-pack applications and withdraw them when the stop ends.

Heat on the Mediterranean complexes

Cartagena and Tarragona run through long hot summers with little shade on the process areas. The certificate states the ambient range, and that range is the figure to compare with the conditions the plant actually reaches in August.

Distances that are walked, not driven

Moving from a tank farm to a loading gantry can mean a long walk with no safe place to charge. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to cover a shift, and four-constellation GNSS places a photograph on the site map instead of in a description.

Salt air and pressure washing

Cartagena, Tarragona, A Coruña and Muskiz all sit on the coast. IP68 sealing is aimed at salt, rain and wash-down rather than at office use.

Use cases · Repsol

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Repsol sites.

Turnaround01

Isolation photographs and sign-off

During a parada an isolation point is photographed, tagged and signed off before the line is opened. A handset that does this inside the classified area keeps the record in the same system as the permit and removes the paper that leaves the site with the crew.

Operations02

Tank farm and loading rounds

An operator at Tarragona or Muskiz walks tank gauges, valve lineups and loading arms in sequence. Photographs of a seeping flange, a position fix and a call to the control room come from one device carried inside the boundary.

Contractors03

Inspection campaigns

An inspection firm working through pipe racks and vessels at Puertollano needs drawings, a camera and a way to reach the planner. Policy set in the console limits the device to the applications the complex has approved.

Questions · Repsol

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Spain

Does Repsol require its own equipment approval beyond ATEX?

Large operators normally run an internal supplier qualification and an equipment review on top of the product certificate. We have not seen Repsol's requirements for this device, so ask the procurement and HSE team at the specific complex what they need from a supplier, and ask for it before an evaluation begins.

Which parts of a refinery need Zone 21 rather than Zone 1?

Refineries are mainly gas and vapour areas, so Zone 1 and Zone 2 dominate. Dust zones appear where solids are handled, such as catalyst, sulphur or polymer powder. Whether any given area needs a Zone 21 designation is a decision in the explosion protection document, not something a supplier can settle.

Can a contractor bring a personal phone onto a Repsol site?

Almost never into a classified area. Ignition source control at refinery sites is strict, and equipment normally has to be on a register before it enters. Ask the permit issuer at the complex what the rules are before planning around a personal device.

Is this page connected to Repsol?

No. It describes the conditions at Repsol's published Spanish sites and what the IS-04Z1 is designed for. It is not an endorsement, a partnership or a supply agreement, and the device is pre-launch with certification in progress.
