Explosion proof mobile phone for Enagas in Spain

Enagás owns Spain's gas transmission network and the regasification plants at Barcelona, Cartagena and Huelva, and holds interests in the Bilbao and Sagunto terminals. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms staff at those plants and along the pipeline network who need an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain that works from the jetty to a compressor hall. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Enagás works in classified areas in Spain

Enagás is a different kind of operator from a refiner. Its hazardous areas are mostly methane, which is gas group IIA and relatively hard to ignite, spread across a national network instead of a single site. Three of its terminals are wholly owned, at Barcelona, Cartagena and Huelva, and it also holds the El Musel plant at Gijón and interests in the BBG terminal in Bilbao and the Saggas terminal at Sagunto. Between the terminals sit compression stations, pressure regulating and metering stations, and three underground storage facilities: Serrablo in Huesca, Yela in Guadalajara and Gaviota, an offshore field off the Bizkaia coast. Enagás also acts as technical system manager for the Spanish gas system. At a terminal the busy classified areas are the ship berth, the cryogenic tanks, the vaporisers and the send-out lines. Many open-air gas areas are Zone 2, with Zone 1 where a release is expected in normal operation, such as vents and sampling points.

Classified units and areas

Ship berth and unloading arms
LNG transfer from carriers, with cold and vapour hazards.
Cryogenic storage tanks
Large tanks with relief and vent systems around the roof and the pumps.
Vaporisers and send-out
Heating LNG back to gas and metering it into the grid.
Vents, flares and sampling points
Places where Zone 1 is more likely than Zone 2.
Compression stations
Gas turbines and compressors in halls and open skids.
Metering and regulating stations
Small, remote sites visited by a single technician.
Control buildings
Outside the classified area, but with the interface in and out of it.

What an Enagás site does to a handset

A gas transmission operator spends its time between sites, so the handset has to be useful at a terminal, on a pipeline route and in a car. The conditions below shape that.

Methane first, other gases in places

Methane is IIA, but odorant systems, nitrogen and sampling lines each have their own considerations. The IS-04Z1 is targeted at II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which covers the gas groups an operator is likely to meet. The temperature class still has to be read against each classification drawing.

Lone workers at remote stations

Metering and regulating stations are often visited by one person, a long way from help. Four-constellation GNSS gives a position that can be shared with the control centre, and the 4G and Wi-Fi radios keep the call link up where coverage allows.

Ship unloading to a timetable

A carrier arrives to a schedule, and the people on the jetty, in the tank area and in the control building are all in contact for the duration. One device that works across those boundaries removes a swap each time.

Salt air and wash-down

Barcelona, Cartagena, Huelva, Gijón and the Bizkaia coast are all marine environments. IP68 sealing is meant for that rather than for an office.

Use cases · Enagás

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work for gas operators.

LNG terminals01

Unloading and tank rounds

During a ship discharge an operator walks the berth, the arms and the tank area. Readings, photographs and a call to the control room come from one device carried inside the classified area.

Pipeline02

Compression and metering station visits

A technician at a compression station moves between a turbine hall and an outdoor skid. A managed handset carries the maintenance instructions and records the visit, and the camera can be controlled by site policy.

Storage03

Planned maintenance at an underground store

Wellhead and surface plant work at a storage site follows a planned programme with contractors. Enrolled handsets let the site manage which applications are available during the job.

Questions · Enagás

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Spain

Is a Zone 1 handset overkill at a terminal that is mostly Zone 2?

Equipment suitable for Zone 1 may be used in Zone 2, so one handset covers both. Operators often prefer to issue a single device for the whole site rather than map each pocket of Zone 1 to a different phone.

Does Enagás publish equipment requirements for suppliers?

Operators of this size normally run supplier qualification and technical review, and some publish tender conditions. We have not verified a specific Enagás route for handsets, so ask Enagás procurement and the plant's HSE team what they require.

What about the offshore Gaviota storage field?

It is an offshore installation, so access, transport and communications are planned for a specific set of conditions. The IS-04Z1 has not been tested for it and nothing on this page claims that it has. Any offshore trial would need its own approvals.

Does the device replace a gas detector?

No. It is a communications and data device. Personal gas detection is a separate piece of equipment and a handset does not substitute for it.
