Explosion proof mobile phone for Chemicals, Biofuels and Mining in Spain

Spain's chemicals, biofuels and mining operations include the Tarragona and Huelva chemical areas, ethanol and biodiesel plants, and metal mines in Andalusia and Extremadura. This page is for the HSE and maintenance staff at those sites who want an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain and are unsure how much of their site is actually classified. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where chemicals, biofuels and mining are classified in Spain

These three sectors have very different hazard profiles. Chemicals is the clearest case. Tarragona hosts Dow, BASF, Covestro, Ercros and Repsol Química in one cluster, and Huelva's chemical area includes the Atlantic Copper smelter and several other producers, with solvent, gas and dust areas on the same plant. Biofuels sit between chemicals and refining. Ethanol and biodiesel plants handle flammable alcohols, methanol and hydrogen where hydrotreated products are made, and storage and loading are classified areas. Mining is the most variable. Spanish metal mining in the south, such as the Cobre Las Cruces operation near Seville, has fewer gas hazards than a coal mine, so its classified areas are mostly fuel stores, reagent handling, explosives magazines and some dust areas rather than the workings. A page like this cannot say which parts of a particular site are classified. That is decided in each site's explosion protection document.

Operators and areas

Tarragona chemical cluster
Dow, BASF, Covestro, Ercros and Repsol Química.
Huelva chemical area
Atlantic Copper, Fertiberia and other producers near the port.
Biofuel producers
Ethanol and biodiesel plants, some integrated with refineries.
Cobre Las Cruces
Metal mine near Seville in the Andalusian belt.
Other southern metal mines
Copper and polymetallic operations in Andalusia and Extremadura.
Plant contractors
Maintenance and inspection firms moving between sites.
Port terminals
Liquid chemicals and fuels handled at coastal berths.

Classified units and areas

Solvent and reactor areas
Flammable liquid and vapour at batch and continuous plants.
Ethanol distillation
Alcohol vapour in distillation and storage areas.
Biodiesel and methanol handling
Flammable methanol in storage, transfer and reaction.
Powder handling
Dust from chemical and mineral powders, subject to classification.
Reagent stores
Flotation and process reagents at mine concentrators.
Explosives and fuel stores
Magazines and fuel depots, where ignition sources are tightly controlled.
Control rooms and offices
Outside the boundary but entered from it.

What these sites do to a handset

Mixed sectors mean mixed conditions. A chemical plant and an open-pit mine share very little except dust, heat and a need to stay in touch. Four points apply across them.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Gas and dust on the same licence

Chemical and biofuel plants often have solvent areas next to powder areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so one handset can follow a person across both.

Open-pit heat and distance

Andalusian and Extremaduran mines are hot and spread over large areas. Four-constellation GNSS positions a photograph or a report, and the 4,000 mAh battery is specified to cover a shift.

Contractors who move between sites

Maintenance firms visit several operators in a week. Android Enterprise and MDM enrolment lets each site apply its own rules without changing the device.

A sector where the answer is often "not here"

Much of a mine or a biofuel plant is outside any classified area, and issuing an Ex phone everywhere would be wasteful. The sensible approach is to equip the people who regularly cross into the classified boundary, such as operators, maintenance and permit issuers, and to leave the rest on ordinary devices.

Dust and wash-down

IP68 sealing is aimed at dust, rain and rinsing, and the 50 MP camera records defects in poor light.

Use cases · Chemicals, biofuels and mining

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in these sectors.

Chemicals01

Plant and tank farm rounds

An operator in a solvent plant walks reactors, pumps and transfer lines. A handset with a camera and a call link records and reports from one device.

Biofuels02

Distillation and loading checks

Staff at an ethanol or biodiesel plant check distillation, storage and tanker loading. A single handset covers flammable liquid and dust areas.

Mining03

Fuel stores and processing plant

Where a mine has classified fuel stores, reagent areas or dust, supervisors can carry one managed device for photographs, location and calls.

Questions · Chemicals, biofuels and mining

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Spain

Do mines need an intrinsically safe phone?

Only where the site has classified areas. A metal mine has fewer gas hazards than a coal mine, so need depends on the site's classification, which is a decision for its HSE team.

Is the device certified for chemical plants?

No. Certification is in progress, and no unit is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate exists.

Which operators does this page cover?

It covers the Tarragona and Huelva chemical areas, biofuel plants and southern metal mines in general terms. For ammonia and fertiliser, see the page on an explosion proof phone for Fertiberia; for refinery-integrated chemicals, see refining and petrochemicals.

Can a handset replace a gas detector?

No. It is a communications and data device. Personal gas detectors are separate and remain required where the site specifies them.
