Explosion proof mobile phone for BP in Spain

BP's Castellón refinery on the Mediterranean coast is the only BP refinery in Spain, and it is a coking refinery with a large tank farm beside the port of Castellón. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and procurement staff there, and for the turnaround contractors who work through it, asking what an explosion proof mobile phone in Spain has to do on that site. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at the BP Castellón refinery

The refinery sits at the edge of Castellón de la Plana beside the port, with the ceramic tile industry spread across the plain inland. A coking refinery turns heavy residue into lighter products and petroleum coke, so the site has two quite different hazard types under one fence. The process side is hydrocarbon vapour, hydrogen in the treating units and sour gas that goes to sulphur recovery. The solids side is petroleum coke, which has to be cut, moved and stored, and which raises dust questions that a gas-only refinery does not face. BP has announced plans for a green hydrogen cluster and more biofuels production at Castellón, including electrolysis capacity phased over several years. Those plans are announcements rather than operating plant, but any new unit that goes ahead will carry its own classified area and its own contractor population.

Operators and contractors

The operating company's only Spanish refinery, beside the port of Castellón.
Port of Castellón
Berths and shared pipelines handling crude and products.
Auxiliary contractors
Maintenance, inspection and scaffolding firms, some 150 of them during a major stop according to press reports on the 2023 turnaround.
Green hydrogen developers
Companies connected with BP's announced hydrogen plans for the site.
Ceramic industry neighbours
Tile makers inland whose gas supply and haulage touch the same roads.
Emergency services
Fire and rescue crews who train on and respond to the site.
Control room operators
Run the units from buildings that sit outside the classified boundary.

Classified units and areas

Crude distillation
Hydrocarbon vapour at furnaces, columns, pumps and exchangers.
Coking and coke handling
Heavy residue processing plus petroleum coke, a dust consideration.
Hydrotreating
Hydrogen-rich service where the gas group is IIC.
Sulphur recovery
Sour gas handling, where toxic gas exposure is a separate hazard to ignition.
Tank farm
Large storage tanks and pump areas for crude and finished product.
Loading and port interface
Ship and road loading with vapour at the connections.
Offices and workshops
Outside the classified boundary but entered from it every shift.

What Castellón does to a handset

A refinery with coke handling behaves differently from a gas-only plant, and a Mediterranean location adds its own summer conditions. Four points come up most often.

Coke dust beside hydrocarbon vapour

Petroleum coke handling is a place where a dust assessment has to be done alongside the gas one. The IS-04Z1 is being certified for both Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so one handset can follow a person from the coker to the coke yard without a swap. Which areas carry which zone is decided by the plant.

A turnaround that is a small town

Press reports of BP's 2023 stop at Castellón described a 52-day programme with up to 4,000 people and around 150 auxiliary companies. Even at a fraction of that scale a stop needs a rapid way to enrol handsets and take them back out, which is what Android Enterprise and MDM are for.

Heat on an open coastal site

Castellón summers are hot and humid, and the process areas have little shade. The temperature class and the ambient range on the certificate are what an instrumentation engineer checks, and the figures will sit on the datasheet.

Salt, dust and pressure washing

The site is on the coast and handles solids. IP68 sealing means a handset can be rinsed down at the end of a shift without a ruined port, and the 50 MP camera makes a legible record of a defect in poor light.

Use cases · BP Castellón

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Castellón.

Turnaround01

Equipment inspection during the stop

Inspectors working through coker, distillation and treating units photograph each finding against the equipment tag. The photograph, position and note reach the planner from the device, not from a laptop in the contractor's cabin.

Operations02

Coke handling rounds

An operator checking coke cutting and conveying areas moves between wet and dry zones. A single handset with a lockable camera replaces a radio and a clipboard on a route where hands are often full.

Projects03

Construction beside live units

If hydrogen or biofuel units are built, construction crews will work next to operating plant under permit. A managed device lets the site push the permit and drawings and keep unapproved applications off.

Questions · BP Castellón

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Spain

Is the BP Castellón refinery described as a coking refinery?

Yes. The site works heavy residue into lighter products and petroleum coke, which is why the coke handling areas matter on this page. We describe the refinery from published sources and have no inside knowledge of its classification drawings.

Does the 2023 turnaround say anything about future stops?

Only that a large stop is a planned, contracted event with a very large temporary workforce. The figures quoted come from press coverage of the 2023 programme and are not a forecast. Check the planning calendar with BP and its contractors.

Will BP's hydrogen plans need a different handset?

Hydrogen is gas group IIC, and the IS-04Z1 is designed with an IIC marking target for that reason. Whether the plans go ahead, and on what timetable, is for BP to say.

Can we trial a unit at the refinery?

Not before certification. Evaluation units are for sites that have agreed terms with us and whose own HSE team has cleared the trial. No unit enters a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.
