ATEX mobile phone for the Czech Republic, Zone 1 and Zone 21

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for Czech refineries, chemical plants, tank farms and coke ovens rather than for a catalogue. It is pre-launch: the ATEX certification programme is running, and Czech operators and contractors can read the evidence and test a unit while it does.

Where it works in the Czech Republic

Czech classified areas are concentrated and well mapped. Refining sits at Litvínov in the north, where the refinery and the steam cracker share the Záluží complex, and at Kralupy nad Vltavou, which runs a conversion refinery with a fluid catalytic cracker. Chemistry runs from Neratovice on the Elbe through Lovosice to the tar and benzol plant at Valašské Meziříčí. Around them sits a fuel logistics network of crude and product pipelines, terminals and gas storage, and in Moravia and Silesia the coke ovens and metallurgy that still carry some of the country's largest gas hazards.

Operators and contractors such as Orlen Unipetrol, Spolana and Synthos Kralupy need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Litvínov and Záluží, Kralupy nad Vltavou and Neratovice. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Czech plant conditions

Nothing here is exotic. It is vapour, powder, cold, wash-down and a lot of contractors, in plants that have been extended repeatedly and are rarely convenient to walk across.

For evaluators in Czech Republic, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Gas and dust under one programme; Certificates people here actually read; Cold rounds and wash-down; A full shift inside the plant; Czech on the device and in the file; Handover between crews.

Gas and dust under one programme

The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and Zone 21 dust protection sits inside the same certification programme. That combination matters at a fertiliser plant or a coking site, where a powder area and a gas area are frequently a few steps apart.

Certificates people here actually read

FTZÚ in Ostrava-Radvanice is notified body 1026 for ATEX and is the name Czech engineers recognise on an Ex certificate. Whichever body issues ours, the certificate number, the issuing body and the complete marking string will be published so they can be checked rather than taken on trust.

Cold rounds and wash-down

IP68 sealing and rugged build, which includes low temperature and humidity, are aimed at a winter round on a tank farm and at the cleaning regime of a chemical plant. The certified ambient range is stated on the datasheet once the certificate fixes it.

A full shift inside the plant

There is no charger inside a classified area, and on a site the size of Záluží the walk to one is not a two-minute errand. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a whole shift with the camera and a maintenance application in use.

Czech on the device and in the file

Android 16 carries a Czech interface, and the instructions, the safe-use guidance and the declaration of conformity are produced in Czech alongside English. Czech law expects the instructions in Czech, so this is planned into the launch rather than translated afterwards.

Handover between crews

Android 16 with EMM and MDM lets a device be enrolled, restricted to the applications a site allows, wiped and reissued as a contractor crew leaves and the next arrives, which during a shutdown can be a weekly event.

Approvals in Czech Republic

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

ATEX is transposed by nařízení vlády 116/2016 Sb. and there is no further Czech product approval. Two things do get checked closely: whether the instructions and declaration of conformity are in Czech, and which notified body issued the certificate, because buyers here compare that against names they already work with.

Regulatory route · Czech Republic

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

The product route is straightforward and entirely European. ATEX 2014/34/EU is transposed by nařízení vlády č. 116/2016 Sb. on conformity assessment of equipment and protective systems intended for use in an explosive atmosphere. A notified body certificate, the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking place the device on the Czech market, and no further national approval follows. The country has an unusual advantage here: FTZÚ, the Physical-Technical Testing Institute at Ostrava-Radvanice, is ATEX notified body 1026, so Czech buyers are used to reading certificates closely and often ask which body issued one before they ask anything else. The radio side runs under RED 2014/53/EU with ČTÚ as the national telecommunications authority, and Czech law expects the instructions supplied with the product to be in Czech.

The duty side belongs to the operator. Nařízení vlády č. 406/2004 Sb. sets the closer requirements for safety and health at work in an environment with a risk of explosion, and it is the Czech implementation of the workplace side of the ATEX pair. It requires the written document on protection against explosion, with the zone classification, the risk assessment and the reasoning behind equipment selection. Enforcement runs through SÚIP, the State Labour Inspection Office, and its regional labour inspectorates, which can ask to see that document and the evidence behind the equipment named in it. In practice a Czech evaluation of a handheld device is an argument about whether the certificate, the marking string and the Czech documentation are complete enough to be quoted in that file.

Use cases · Czech Republic

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Czech Republic includes: Unit rounds across the Záluží complex; Chlorine and PVC areas at Neratovice; Tank farm and loading terminal work; Coke oven gas systems in Ostrava and Třinec.

Refining01

Unit rounds across the Záluží complex

At Litvínov the refinery and the cracker sit on one large site, and an operator round crosses several units before it reaches a control room. A Zone 1 handset lets a reading be logged, a leaking flange photographed and a question answered by voice at the equipment, instead of remembered until the end of the round.

Chemicals02

Chlorine and PVC areas at Neratovice

Chlor-alkali and polymer plants combine an aggressive gas hazard with powder handling and a strict cleaning routine. One device covering Zone 1 and Zone 21 removes the two-phone habit, and a sealed, washable body survives a regime that destroys ordinary handsets within a quarter.

Fuel logistics03

Tank farm and loading terminal work

The crude tank farm at Nelahozeves and the product terminals around the country classify their loading racks and tank areas. Reading an NFC tag at a bay, photographing a seal and reaching the shift supervisor from the gantry replaces a routine that otherwise runs on walking and paper.

Coking and metallurgy04

Coke oven gas systems in Ostrava and Třinec

Coke ovens and by-product plants carry gas hazards inside sites that also run dust, heat and heavy traffic. Crews there work far from an office, and a handset that keeps a connection and records what was found on the spot is worth more than a clipboard that is transcribed hours later.

How to buy · Czech Republic

How to evaluate and buy in the Czech Republic

The device has not launched, so none of this asks for an order. The point of the sequence is that your internal review and our certification progress at the same time rather than in series.

  1. 01

    Send the zone data

Give us the zones, the gas or dust group and the temperature class from your classification, whether the users are your own staff or contractors, and roughly how many devices a site would carry. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification under way, enough for a safety technician to draft the equipment entry and for a buyer to open a supplier file.

  3. 03

Test a unit on the plant

Evaluation units go to Czech operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful trial covers enrolment in your own console, a cold outdoor round, the cleaning routine, a dust area and a full shift with the camera in use.

  4. 04

    Agree the supply route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Czech or Czech and Slovak distribution partner, or direct where a customer prefers that. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a defined quantity and configuration.

Questions · Czech Republic

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Czech Republic?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Czech Republic →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified for the Czech market?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the certification programme is in progress. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate that covers it exists.

Which notified body will issue the certificate?

The issuing body is named on the certificate and will be published with it rather than described in advance. It is a fair question to ask here, because FTZÚ at Ostrava-Radvanice is ATEX notified body 1026 and Czech engineers are used to checking who signed a certificate before reading the rest of it.

Is a separate Czech approval needed after ATEX?

No. Nařízení vlády 116/2016 Sb. transposes ATEX 2014/34/EU, so a notified body certificate with the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking is the whole product-side requirement. What follows is the employer duty under nařízení vlády 406/2004 Sb., which SÚIP enforces.

How much does an ATEX phone cost in the Czech Republic?

There is no list price before launch, and a published price for an uncertified device would not mean much. Pre-launch pricing is quoted in writing against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement rather than sold.

Will the instructions and the interface be in Czech?

Yes. Android 16 carries a Czech interface, and the instructions, the safe-use guidance and the declaration of conformity are produced in Czech alongside English. Czech law expects product instructions in Czech, so this is built into the launch rather than added on request.

Is it a flameproof mobile phone or an intrinsically safe one?

Intrinsically safe. The target protection concept is Ex ib, which limits the energy available in the device so that it cannot ignite the atmosphere, rather than the flameproof Ex d approach of containing an ignition inside a heavy enclosure. For a handheld device carried through a plant, ia is the concept that makes sense.

Who repairs the device and replaces the battery?

The Czech partner SAMS is appointing or a facility recognised for repairing Ex equipment. Opening the device outside that route breaks the protection concept the certificate depends on, so the repair and battery path is defined as part of the launch rather than settled after the first failure.
