Explosion proof mobile phone for Brazil, the INMETRO Ex route

The IS-04Z1 is an Ex mobile phone for people working inside classified areas on Brazilian platforms, refineries, petrochemical units, mills and terminals. It is pre-launch: the INMETRO certification route and ANATEL homologação are both in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

Where the IS-04Z1 is meant to work in Brazil

Hazardous area work here is unusually concentrated offshore, then spread along the coast through refining and petrochemicals, with an inland layer of mining and biofuel plants that handset vendors ignore.

Operators and contractors such as Petrobras, Acelen and Braskem need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Santos Basin pre-salt, Campos Basin and Duque de Caxias. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

How the specification meets Brazilian conditions

Six things decide whether a handset survives a Brazilian site, and only the first is about paperwork.

For evaluators in Brazil, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: A mark Brazilian inspectors accept; Heat, salt and constant humidity; Dust from cane, grain and ore; Rotations measured in weeks; Portuguese from the first screen; Fleets that change with every contract.

A mark Brazilian inspectors accept

Certification runs through an OCP accredited by INMETRO, against requirements built on the ABNT NBR IEC 60079 series. Because those standards track IEC 60079, IECEx test data normally supports the Brazilian file without replacing it.

Heat, salt and constant humidity

A jetty at Suape, a deck in the Santos Basin and a unit at Camaçari all combine heat with salt-laden air. IP68 sealing and rugged build cover the physical side, and T4 is the figure checked against the drawing.

Dust from cane, grain and ore

Brazil carries more combustible dust exposure than most markets: bagasse and sugar in the mills, grain at the export terminals, ore in materials handling. The Zone 21 design target covers a mill as well as a gas unit.

Rotations measured in weeks

An offshore rotation is not a shift, and a broken handset waits for the next boat. A 4,000 mAh battery, a Snapdragon octa-core platform, platform Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairing to gas detection suit that pattern.

Portuguese from the first screen

Android 16 runs the interface in Brazilian Portuguese, and Portuguese documentation is part of the launch package. It matters for training records under NR-20 and NR-10, which auditors expect in the working language.

Fleets that change with every contract

Terceirizados arrive for a parada and leave again. EMM and MDM enrollment ties a device to a crew, restricts the app set and wipes it at demobilization, so a loaned fleet stays auditable.

Approvals in Brazil

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

Brazil is the market where a foreign certificate settles nothing on its own. Certification is compulsory, issued by an OCP accredited by INMETRO, and the INMETRO conformity mark is what an inspector and a Petrobras contract both look for.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

In Brazil the first question is not whether a foreign certificate is respected, it is whether the product carries the Brazilian one. Certification of electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres is compulsory, and the current rule is Portaria INMETRO number 115 of 2022, which replaced the long-standing Portaria 179 of 2010 and aligned the requirements with current standard editions. The certificate is issued by an OCP, an Organismo de Certificação de Produto accredited by INMETRO, which arranges testing at a laboratory accredited by Cgcre and, at this risk level, inspects the manufacturing site. Requirements follow the ABNT NBR IEC 60079 series, so an IECEx assessment normally supports the file without substituting for the Brazilian certificate.

Two more gates follow. A telecommunications product cannot be sold or used in Brazil without homologação: an Organismo de Certificação Designado issues the certificate of technical conformity, ANATEL then homologates it, and the number is shown on the product. Employer duties are separate, and they are where a site writes down what may pass a boundary sign: NR-20 governs work with flammables and combustibles, NR-10 governs electrical safety. Finally there is a commercial gate unique to this market. Suppliers register with Petrobras through the Petronect portal, and the Certificado de Registro Cadastral, assessed against technical, SMS, economic and legal criteria, is what puts a supplier in front of a tender.

Use cases · Brazil

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Brazil includes: Handover on a Santos Basin FPSO; Parada geral inside a refinery unit; Unit rounds at Camaçari and Triunfo; Tank farms, jetties and mill floors.

Offshore01

Handover on a Santos Basin FPSO

On a Búzios or Tupi unit the crew changes on a fixed rotation and whatever is not recorded is lost at handover. An Ex phone lets a technician photograph a valve position, close a permit on deck and hand a legible record to the incoming shift.

Refining02

Parada geral inside a refinery unit

A shutdown at REPLAN, REDUC or RNEST concentrates a year of maintenance into a few weeks and fills the classified area with contracted crews. A handset lets a supervisor confirm an isolation and reach the planning room from inside the battery limit.

Petrochemicals03

Unit rounds at Camaçari and Triunfo

An integrated pole puts a gas unit and a solids handling area a few hundred metres apart, and leaving one phone at a boundary to collect another wastes time all shift. A device for Zone 1 and Zone 21 covers the whole walk.

Terminals and biofuels04

Tank farms, jetties and mill floors

Loading at Santos, Suape or Aratu puts people on tank tops and manifolds with vapour present and a berthing window to hold, while a cane mill adds dust. One handset that takes a washdown and still sends a photograph beats a radio.

How to buy · Brazil

How to evaluate and buy in Brazil

Nothing is sold into a classified area before the Brazilian certificate exists, so the pre-launch conversation is about evidence, evaluation and the import route.

  1. 01

Tell us where the units will work

Send the zone classification, the gas or dust group and the temperature class from your drawing, the number of users, and whether the fleet is for employees or contracted crews.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and certification schedule

You receive the technical datasheet and a written schedule of every certification being pursued, INMETRO and ANATEL included, with the status of each. Nothing is presented as complete before the certificate exists.

  3. 03

Book an evaluation unit or a pilot place

Evaluation units go to sites that will use them properly, offshore or inside a unit. Pilot places are being allocated across offshore, refining and industrial operations before launch.

  4. 04

Agree the import and supply route

Supply runs through a local partner handling import, the INMETRO mark, the ANATEL number and, where required, Petronect registration. Direct supply is possible where a customer prefers it.

Questions · Brazil

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Brazil?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Brazil →
Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use in Brazil today?

No. It is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty and certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Until an INMETRO certificate exists it may not be taken into a classified area here.

We accept ATEX and IECEx elsewhere. Are they enough in Brazil?

No. Certification is compulsory under Portaria INMETRO 115/2022, and only a Brazilian certificate with the INMETRO mark satisfies it. Because ABNT NBR IEC 60079 follows IEC 60079, IECEx data usually supports the file and shortens the process, but never replaces it.

Is this a flameproof phone, or intrinsically safe?

Buyers say flameproof, exproof and Ex proof phone for anything usable in a classified area, but the concepts differ. Flameproof, Ex d, or à prova de explosão, contains an ignition inside a heavy enclosure. A handset takes the Ex ib intrinsic safety route instead.

Does it need ANATEL homologação as well?

Yes. A telecommunications product may not be sold or used in Brazil without it. An OCD issues the certificate of technical conformity, ANATEL homologates, and the number is shown on the product. That work runs in parallel with the INMETRO route.

Will the interface and the manual be in Portuguese?

Android 16 runs the interface in Brazilian Portuguese, and Portuguese documentation is part of the launch package. Ask for the manual and label text with the certification schedule so NR-20 and NR-10 records match the working language.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Brazil?

There is no price list for a device whose certificate has not issued. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request once we know fleet size, configuration and whether supply runs through a Brazilian distributor or direct, since import treatment changes the landed figure.

Can it be used offshore, and can it reach a Petrobras tender?

It is designed for offshore Zone 1 duty, with IP68 and rugged build and platform Wi-Fi where cellular coverage stops. Reaching a tender is separate: that runs through Petronect registration and the Certificado de Registro Cadastral held by the partner.

Does it cover a sugar and ethanol mill or a mining plant?

Those are the dust cases. The device is designed for Zone 21 as well as Zone 1, which is what a bagasse, sugar, grain or ore handling area needs. The dust marking is published with the certificate.
