Explosion proof mobile phone for Petrobras sites

Looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for Petrobras sites in Brazil? Petrobras runs the country's dominant integrated oil and gas business: Santos Basin pre-salt production, Campos Basin fields served from Macaé, the largest part of the national refining system, and, through Transpetro, pipelines and coastal terminals. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms people who decide what a person may carry across a classified boundary at any of them. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed across Petrobras in Brazil

Petrobras is not one hazardous area but four different working worlds under one name. Offshore, a person lives on a floating unit for a rotation and every walk is inside a classified deck or a module next to one. In a refinery, the classified area is a fixed set of process units and the visitors are contracted crews. On the pipeline and terminal side, sites are small, remote and often unmanned between visits. Each pattern asks a different thing of a handset, which is why a single answer about hazardous-area phones rarely survives contact with the whole company.

Fields, refineries and terminals

Búzios and Tupi
Santos Basin pre-salt fields producing through FPSOs, among the largest producers in Brazil.
Mero and Atapu
Pre-salt developments operated by Petrobras with international partners in the consortium.
Campos Basin
Mature fields such as Roncador and Marlim, supported from Macaé.
REPLAN, Paulínia
The largest refinery in the Petrobras system, in São Paulo state.
REDUC, Duque de Caxias
Refining in the Rio de Janeiro industrial belt, close to Guanabara Bay.
RNEST, Ipojuca
The Abreu e Lima refinery in the Suape industrial zone, Pernambuco.
Other São Paulo and southern units
Refineries at Cubatão and São José dos Campos, and units in Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul.

Hazard types you will meet

FPSO process deck
Separation, gas treatment and compression: Zone 1 gas, with Zone 2 around it.
Refinery process units
Distillation, conversion and treating units, with hydrogen service in hydrotreating.
Tank farms and pumping stations
Vapour at roofs, manifolds and pump bays, in the open and exposed to weather.
Pipeline compressor and metering stations
Gas under pressure, often at remote sites with few staff.
Marine terminals
Loading arms and jetties where tankers and shore pipework meet.
Utilities and flare systems
Classified areas near flares, relief systems and sour water handling.
Administrative buildings
Offices, control rooms and canteens, normally outside the classified boundary.
Built for local conditions

What Brazilian sites do to a handset

Classification decides whether a device can be carried. After that, the environment and the work pattern decide whether it is still useful at the end of the trip.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Heat, salt and humidity on the same day

A pre-salt deck, a jetty at a Rio terminal and a refinery unit near the coast all combine warm air, salt and humidity. IP68 sealing and the rugged build cover the physical side; the temperature class is what the instrumentation engineer checks against the area drawing.

Rotations measured in weeks, not shifts

An offshore technician is on the unit for the whole rotation and a damaged phone waits for the next crew change. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to carry a working day between charges in the accommodation block, which is where the charger will be.

Four fleets under one corporate name

Offshore, refining, logistics and corporate users have different applications and different risk. Android Enterprise management from an existing MDM console lets each group get its own profile without a separate toolchain.

A camera that has to follow the permit

Records of a valve position or a defect are only useful if they can be taken where the work is done. Photography rules differ by unit, so the camera has to be something a console can restrict instead of a feature that is simply absent.

Portuguese records for NR-20, NR-10 and NR-37

Training and inspection records are expected in the working language. The Android 16 interface runs in Brazilian Portuguese, and Portuguese documentation is part of the launch package.

Use cases · Petrobras

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Petrobras.

Offshore01

Crew change on a Santos Basin FPSO

The outgoing technician has a rotation's worth of small observations: a valve that sticks, a gauge that drifts. A handset on deck lets those be photographed and logged before the boat, instead of being reconstructed from memory in the helicopter.

Refining02

Parada at REPLAN or REDUC

A planned shutdown concentrates a year of maintenance into weeks and fills the units with contracted crews. A supervisor inside the battery limit can confirm an isolation, check a permit and reach the planning room without walking to the gate.

Logistics03

Remote pipeline and terminal visits

A compressor or metering station may be visited rarely and staffed by one or two people. Navigation by four-constellation GNSS, a photograph of the instrument and a call to the control room come from one device.

Questions · Petrobras

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Petrobras sites yet?

No. The device is pre-launch, and IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and the Brazilian INMETRO route are all in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Nothing should be taken into a classified area on the strength of this page.

Does a handset need different approvals for offshore and onshore work?

The protection concept and area classification are the same questions on both, but the evidence a unit asks for can differ. Offshore users will also work under NR-37, so ask each unit's HSE team which certificates and records it will want to see before a device is issued.

How does a supplier get onto Petrobras's vendor lists?

Petrobras's supplier registration is described on the Brazil overview page and runs through its own procurement portal. Requirements are set by Petrobras and can change, so confirm the current criteria with Petrobras directly rather than relying on a third-party summary.

Is Petrobras the same buyer as Transpetro?

They are separate companies within the same group, and a terminal or pipeline site may follow its own procedures. Ask whichever team owns the site, not the group, which standard applies.
