Explosion proof mobile phone for Shell Brasil, Santos Basin pre-salt

An explosion proof mobile phone for Shell Brasil has to suit offshore work in Brazil's deep water. Shell holds interests in the Santos Basin pre-salt, including the Mero and Atapu developments, and operates the Parque das Conchas fields in the Campos Basin. This page is for the HSE, telecoms and operations teams who decide what may be carried onto a floating production unit and across a classified boundary. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone use across Shell's Brazil portfolio

Shell's Brazilian upstream is mostly non-operated: in the pre-salt it holds participating interests alongside Petrobras and other partners, and the units are run to the operator's procedures. Parque das Conchas, in the Campos Basin, is the field where Shell is the operator, so its own procedures apply. Shell has also been developing Gato do Mato, a Santos Basin discovery planned for later this decade. A handset therefore meets several rulebooks in a single career: the operator's on a partner-run FPSO, and Shell's own where it controls operations.

Interests and fields

Mero
Santos Basin pre-salt field with several FPSOs; Shell holds a participating interest, with Petrobras as operator.
Atapu
Pre-salt field produced through an FPSO, with a second unit planned; Shell is a minority partner.
Parque das Conchas
Campos Basin fields where Shell controls operations.
Gato do Mato
Santos Basin development in which Shell is the lead partner, with first oil planned later in the decade.
Equipment owners
FPSOs are often owned by charter companies and run for the operator.
Support bases
Rio de Janeiro and the ports that serve the Santos and Campos basins.
Offices
Shell's Brazilian offices, outside the classified boundary.

Hazard types offshore

FPSO process deck
Oil separation, gas treatment and compression: Zone 1 gas with surrounding Zone 2.
Gas treatment modules
Pre-salt gas carries high CO2, and treatment and compression add classified space.
Wellbay and manifold areas
High-pressure hydrocarbons at risers and manifolds.
Turret and offloading
Cargo transfer to shuttle tankers, with vapour risk during loading.
Helideck and accommodation
Normally outside the classified boundary, where devices are charged.
Subsea and marine support
Support vessels working to marine rather than industrial rules.
Onshore base
Warehouses, logistics and offices on land.
Built for local conditions

What a pre-salt rotation does to a handset

The classification sets the limit. The rotation, the offshore environment and the number of parties involved set the day-to-day experience.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh

OSAndroid 16

A rotation, not a shift

A technician flies out, works the rotation and flies back. If a handset fails mid-rotation there is no replacement until the next helicopter, so reliability and sealing matter more than headline features. The 4,000 mAh cell is meant to carry a working day between charges in the accommodation.

Salt, spray and constant motion

A deck environment is wet and salty. IP68 sealing and the rugged build are the starting point, and drop resistance matters when the user is wearing gloves and the platform is moving.

Several parties on one unit

Owner of the vessel, operator, shuttle-tanker crews and contractors all have rules. A device enrolled in an existing MDM console can carry a profile for each, so the Shell team can restrict what runs on its own users' units.

Marking that reads in ATEX and IECEx

A European operator's engineers usually reference both. The IS-04Z1 is being certified to IECEx and ATEX, with a marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, but the certificates will define scope once they exist.

Portuguese for the crew, English for the review

Brazilian crews work in Portuguese, while a global operator's review is often in English. The interface runs in Brazilian Portuguese and the documentation is intended in both languages.

Use cases · Shell Brasil

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work for Shell Brasil.

Offshore01

Deck rounds on a partner-operated FPSO

A Shell representative on a non-operated unit has to see what the operator sees. A handset that works inside the classified area allows photographs and notes to be taken during a walkdown, then shared once back on the accommodation Wi-Fi.

Operations02

Parque das Conchas inspections

Where Shell is the operator, its own standards apply. A single device for inspections, permits and the daily report keeps the paper trail in one place and under its own control.

Projects03

Gato do Mato hook-up and commissioning

During construction and commissioning, crews work in areas that change from week to week. A managed handset gives the commissioning team a list of approved apps and a means of recording punch-list items on deck.

Questions · Shell Brasil

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Shell Brasil sites yet?

No. The device is pre-launch, and certification, including ATEX and IECEx, is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No unit should be taken into a classified area before the relevant certificates exist.

Who decides what is allowed on a partner-operated FPSO?

The operator of the field sets the site rules, and the vessel owner may add its own. A non-operating partner such as Shell would normally have to work within them, so ask the operator's HSE team first.

Does the high CO2 content of pre-salt gas change the classification?

It adds treatment and compression equipment, and so classified space, but the hazardous-area classification is decided from the gas and release sources on each unit. The site's classification drawing is the document to check.

Is Shell Brasil the same as Raízen?

No. Raízen is a separate company, a joint venture of Shell and Cosan, with its own mills, safety procedures and procurement.
